“Not what it once was”

A very disappointing experience. It’s the first time we have visited since the end of 2020 and dined in. Seems the menu has changed, which is no problem, although one of our favourites has gone. On arriving (1800) we were seated quickly by friendly staff. Looked like it was busy with takeaways and deliveries and more people coming in. By 1815 the place was pretty full and we were looking around to order food/drinks as no one had come. After ordering food we could see and hear people around asking when their food was coming with people saying they had been waiting a long time. By 1910 we are starting to get a bit fed up of waiting, but luckily we got our food before other people that had ordered before. Unfortunately I was quite disappointed at the food we had ordered. It all tasted quite bland and the portion had notably shrunk since we last went. We were very disappointed with how the food taste and portion has gone. Also with the extended wait. Overall I feel that the prices have gone up and the place is not the high standard that it used to be. Happy to pay the price of good quality food and enjoy a leisurely service but this was very terrible. I think I’ve left a couple of reviews on this place before and have always been positive. Such a shame, but hope things will improve and we can go back. For now we shall eat elsewhere.

The food is amazing!

The food here is amazing! As a Londoner the prices here are London prices (for mains) which I wasn’t expecting but when you see the quality of produce, portion sizes and then taste you won’t be left disappointed or shirt changed. I’ve been here a few times and have never left disappointed or hungry. Staff are very happy and welcoming. The only area where they could ‘up their game’ is to be more accommodating with changes to some dishes with meat choices as it’s a fixed menu. I’ll definitely be going back!

Have eaten here many times over the years. Great Food & service. Now doing deliveries because of covid, great food, really outstanding service - call to check and suggest alternatives due to allergen needs. They are just fab.

Great thai!

We often come here for lunch. The food is fantastic and the waitresses are so friendly, I can't speak more highly of them, always a smile when we come in and so friendly. The food is always served fresh and hot. Of all the times we have visited, we have never been disappointed.

Food Ok (but expensive for what you get.) Service poor.

Went to Sala Thong for a quick meal on a night out. The meals themselves were very tasty but small portions and expensive for what you got. It took some time for the young waiter to take our order and then a further wait for the food to arrive. We only had two mains , a rice and a pint each. When the bill arrived it came to £43.20. I put down £50 on the saucer with the bill. The young waiter then picked it up and said 'Are you expecting any change?' He looked rather crest fallen when I said yes. (Whilst I appreciate waiters , 'angle' for trips , it seemed a bit rich a 16% tip to deliver two plates of food. When the change came back I could instantly see that it was short by a couple of pounds. I told the young waiter it was wrong and asked him to check it. Which he did. He then apologised and gave me the missing money. Whilst i accept that this may have been a genuine mistake , I was rather disappointed by the experience and won't go back to the Sala Thong again

Shocking Service and attitude

Sorry this is a long read. Myself and 2 friends visited this restaurant at the end of June 2022, we had booked a couple of months previously and were looking forward to our evening. Unfortunately from the minute we arrived at the restaurant we were disappointed. We had our table booked for 8pm, we arrived on time to a packed restaurant, we had to stand waiting for our table for 20mins before being seated. We sat for 30 mins waiting to be asked if we wanted to order a drink, in the end we managed to get the attention of the waitress who came and took our drinks order, 45 mins from being seated to get a drink. We took advantage of having the waitress at our table and ordered our food at this point. Trying to get their attention was difficult and the sighing and rolling of eyes by the waitress made us feel a little out of order for asking her to do her job! Anyway our starters arrived at 9.35pm (table booked at 8pm remember) which were very nice but to be honest I would have eaten a scabby dog at this point. Our main courses arrived at 9.57pm by the eye rolling waitress who told us the kitchen was now closed and so was the bar! We had finished our drinks and requested more as our main course had just been served and her response "well I don't make the rules" with a roll of the eyes and a huff for effect. A more senior waitress arrived and advised that we could order more drinks which we did. We ate our food which to be fair was nice and drinking our wine and chatting when our lovely waitress brought over our bill which we hadn't asked for and told us they were closing! It was a Friday night and 10.40pm....when we said we hadn't even been shown the dessert menu and we hadn't finished our drinks she rolled her eyes again and got the more senior waitress to come over. We weren't happy with her response so requested the owner to come over (he works behind the bar). Well the attitude was shocking apparently they were really busy and short staffed that was the reason for the rolling of eyes and huffing and puffing!!! They had been accepting walkins all night but couldn't actually service their pre-booked tables, the response to that was, so what do you want as you clearly want something! I said an apology would be nice but we didn't get one of those, after much attitude he deducted £20 from a £150 bill. If you want service with a smile or without attitude I recommend you go to the other Thai restaurant in the old town, avoid this one.

Terrible attitude from the staff - but food is quite good 👍

The staff are really rude especially the guy on the phone taking orders, the staff have some issues that they take to worth with them so we don’t intend to come back as there are much friendlier places on the high street with good food. The food is alright. Not the best Thai we have had, some dishes could be better, but quite good for the money. The Tom Kha is really good.

Worst Thai meal I’ve ever had

The worst Thai meal I’ve ever had. Menu is very small and quite over priced, nearly £15 for a pad Thai which was quite bland. Staff were un-attentive and a couple of them miserable and quite rude. The restaurant was busy so I got the impression they felt they didn’t need to consider good customer service. This is more like a cafe vibe than a restaurant being quite loud with little ambience. To add insult to injury I’m pretty sure they were serving the small measure of wine in a smaller wine glass then claiming it was the medium size. I know my wine and how long it takes me to drink a glass. Plus when I had soda in one it hardly tasted of wine at all. In a small glass a medium wine with soda would have have had a noticeably obvious taste of wine instead it seemed to be mostly soda. I queried it and they assured me it was a medium, without watching them pour the glass there was nothing I could do. Certainly wont be returning, I’ve paid less in central london and had better food and honest wine measures!

Unreal food, great service and very friendly staff! The taste and presentation of the food clearly had a lot of effort out into it. The waitresses are very friendly and attentive. You get a great vibe and feel as soon as you step in and leave feeling satisfied. Couldn’t fault it and would recommend highly. The only one thing that could push this place to the next level is having more of a Thailand experience inside, the decor and restraunt itself is quite modern and pretty standard but it doesn’t takeaway from the experience.

Sadly Less Than Perfect...

We’ve been here dozens and dozens of times including large birthday groups and supported them through lockdown with takeaways but things appear to have changed. We first noticed it when ordering a prawn pad Thai takeaway some weeks ago, they were using different prawns, inferior ones at that. My wife always said they were the best around but they appeared to be cutting costs, maybe the usual supplier couldn’t deliver, we gave them the benefit of the doubt. We returned for lunch the first day they reopened and ordered some usuals and a couple of new dishes but weren’t impressed. The duck spring roll was covered in an awful hoi sin sauce and some of the meat fatty, I couldn’t finish it but fair enough we don’t like every dish. Sadly though my wife’s favourite squid starter has been messed with and she also couldn’t eat it, the new sauce was quite unpleasant and she said the squid didn’t seem to be the same quality either. The mains were better, my much beloved green curry was different, the sauce thicker and they’re now using standard aubergines alongside the small Thai style but the flavour was still very good, possibly better as not as sweet as previously. My wife wasn’t as crazy about her previously untried chicken main but that was more about personal likes, there was nothing wrong with it to be fair and she agreed. There was subsequently an embarrassing exchange at the end of the meal when a discount voucher was offered but not followed through on and the manager or marketing manager who was onsite offered a free squid dish but my wife had already left to take a phone call. As loyal customers we insist on being treated respectfully but I’m not sure how often we’ll return now, things seem different but to be fair the world has been different. We’ll give them another chance I’m sure, we can’t imagine not seeing the lovely Grace any more, she seems to hold the place together herself. I notice that the only responses from management are on 5* reviews, I’d say it’s more important to rectify the lower scores reviews.?

Valentine’s Day Shambles

Booked a table with my husband for 7:30. Entered the restaurant and there were 2 other couples in front of us waiting to be seated. Both couples were saying how they’d been waiting for hours and the service was shocking. They both left. My husband and I were waiting and by this point it was 7:50. We could see multiple (at least 5) empty tables where people had just finished their meals and left. Not once did a member of staff approach us, they didn’t even look at us. We could see people leaving their table and having to approach the staff to order drinks and food. A table was empty right in front of us and a lady came over (I thought she was going to tell us to take a seat) but she again, didn’t even acknowledge our presence, she cleared the plates on the table and left. We waited a further 5 minutes and still nothing from the staff. It was busy, which I understand, but it takes 10 seconds to acknowledge us and tell us what the wait time is or at least let us sit down. We hadn’t just turned up, we had booked a table. In the end we left because the service/lack of was so rude and shocking and I can safely say my husband and I will not be returning. We aren’t fussy people, we aren’t rude or demanding and are very understanding but we expect a certain level of service when booking a table at a restaurant. Not even a word from any staff member and we were standing there like lemons for 25 minutes! Disgraceful. We went to Angelique which is a bit further down in the end and it was amazing. Food, service and staff were so attentive we cannot recommend it enough!

Incredible Meal!

Absolutely delicious meal with my fiancé and in laws. We got sharing platters for 2 followed by 4 curries with a jasmine rice each. Initial thoughts were the plates were a bit small but actually all 4 of us left feeling very full & every single dish was absolutely incredible. Lovely staff who are attentive but not intrusive. The restaurant itself is gorgeous too. We will definitely be back & highly recommend to anyone! Thank you for an amazing evening!

Birthday dinner

Excellent as always. Theres a great vibe in this restaurant and the food is amazing, just like being back in Thailand. Treated myself to a cocktail too which was delicious. I booked in advance as is always best here as it's a popular restaurant with many return diners. If you like Thai food then this will not disappoint! My favourite restaurant in Stevenage by far. It's a little pricey but in all fairness you pay for quality. My friend and I had scallops and chicken satay for starters and then we shared the lobster green curry with sides of jasmine rice (sticky rice) and stir fried veggies. Seriously good food! The cocktail pictured is a Cosmopolitan. Definitely recommend.

See what a lack of competition can do!

Let’s face it, there’s not exactly much choice for Thai food in Stevenage and this to me seems like an example of how sometimes a lack of competition can lead to some disappointing results. We only had main courses here and on the face of it the Monk Fish Panaang Curry that I had at first didn’t seem so bad but in actual fact the Monkfish didn’t really taste of anything much and the curry was far too thin and totally lacking in texture – much like a bland overly tomato-based sauce. Interestingly the chili hotness in this dish is all in small cuts of actual chili so the heat can be avoided – you can decide if that is a good thing or not but I certainly don’t remember coming across that concept anywhere in Thailand where a hot curry-based dish is indeed spicy all the way through. The service was attentive and the interior (no outdoor seating) is all clean if not a bit bland. I don’t know, maybe I just got unlucky with what I ordered and perhaps some of the other dishes might not be so bad – I suspect the pictures on her an on their website might provide a guide on what to order.

Best Thai restaurant near Knebworth

Having spent many months in Thailand in the past and being starved of a local Thai restaurant, we were so desperate for a Thai restaurant in the area, and when Sala Thong opened we couldn't have been happier, it was like the Gods had answered our prayers. We have been coming here since it opened and absolutely love it! The staff are so friendly and accomodating and the food is fantastic. Not a week goes by without us eating here or ordering a takeaway. Enjoy!
