A nice evening dispite the wait.

We booked a table on arrival to be told of a 45 minute wait, but to compensate us for the mistake our bill would be reduced. The service was not at its best, I will put this down to the current government scheme of ear out to help out. The restaurant was very busy and we waited a long while for drinks to arrive once we had ordered them. They then tried to give us the wrong food after yet another long wait. Dispite all of the waiting all of the meals finally arrived well presented and cooked to perfection. So dispite the rather slow service and lack of communication from the staff we had a very enjoyable evening.

Food I ordered the sharing platter. I am allergic to shell fish and the chef agreed to substitute the prawns with an alternative option of my choice. The food came in good time, was well cooked and tasted delicious. Drinks There was a wide selection of drinks including cocktails on the menu and all reasonably priced. The drinks were strong and really good, we ordered 3 or 4 on our visit. Service The waiter was very personable and helpful throughout, I found the service to be fast and waiters attentive.

London priced steak house, reasonably informal, lovely evening out

London priced steakhouse, based in stevenage old town, extremely well maintained gives off an air of polish that's been worked on to provide a sense of grandeur and attentiveness. That being said, our waiter a young man was great and very attentive but he did seem to be the only one of the wait staff regularly checking on tables, leaving the other sections to flag down there staff rather than being approached. Reasonably informal in terms of dress code and clientele with attentive service, we've been a few times now and are always happy with the quality of the food and the variety of options for the drinks menu. Will mention for those who are a little hard of hearing that it can get loud, as the building is lovely openly spaced so, noise does tend to carry rather well, but if asked the staff are happy to put you a little further from other tables to help with this.

Bad food, terrible service

Unfortunately a very disappointing meal. Drinks took so long to arrive, food arrived cold, lots of mix up between orders. The ‘Chilli’ seafood pasta was completely bland, when we asked the waiter for some chilli flakes to help give it some taste - we were given an industrial sized bottle of Franks Hot Sauce. Unacceptable for a dish costing £18. The icing on the cake was the terrible response to our complaints over the food - management couldn’t have cared less. They offered us a round of free drinks ....half an hour later, still no drinks. We asked for money off the bill instead, to which they reluctantly offered 10% off ....20 minutes later, still no bill. Such a shame for our first girls meal out together after lockdown as it ruined the evening.

We are very sorry to hear your recent experience with us, this is definitely not how we usually do things at angelique. We can only apologise for the experience you had with us and can assure it wont happen again. As a new independent restaurant we are finding our feet so there are still a few teething issues. As you can see from our other reviews its very rare that someone leaves unhappy therefore we do take our feedback seriously. This sort of feedback is helpful and lets us see what we can do better. A shocking first impression

I went out with my friends for a Saturday evening meal and had a poor time from start to finish. Firstly our table was right by the door (which was wide open) we were all feeling pretty cold so asked the host if we could move she politely said it wasn’t possible which is fair enough but why have a table so close to the door if your going to have them open when it’s not even hot? Secondly the drinks. We ordered a cocktail jug which was actually just half a jug of poorly presented and a not very nice cocktail. Thirdly the food. Myself and another guest had the mussels with fries, which were stone cold and rubbery. My friends paella however was really nice. We did not have a check back in what I would sh was adequate timing so we just ate our cold meals as we were hungry but definitely weren’t happy. We eventually got a waiters attention he asked about our food, I told him our dissatisfaction and he apologised, shortly after a manager came over. As someone who works in the industry I was completely unsatisfied with his management of a complaint. He was a bit cocky, insincere, gave no eye contact and no appropriate solution. I would like to add that my friend and myself have suffered with an upset stomach today which we can only put down to the poor quality food. We paid the full bill for a meal which I can only compare to the standard of premier inn hotel.

We booked a table for 4, days in advance for 7:30 on a Monday evening. Upon arrival there was 20+ people all waiting, all with a booking, all for 7:30pm.... but no tables. We waited 25 minutes to be told if we want to eat we will have to share a table with 4 other random proper ( very socially distanced ). The manager was rude, unapologetic and aggressive. Shame as we were looking forward to a meal. We live across the road in the old town so could have been frequent customers. We then had a great meal and superb customer service next door, at the professionally run Lavish restaurant.

Daughter’s birthday lunch...not good :(

Daughter’s birthday lunch... what a disappointment. The food was awful: I had plain Caesar salad as I am vegetarian which consisted of lettuce and croutons although menu said black pepper and anchovies. I couldn’t even finish it as it was tasteless and dry and I’m sure my rabbit would have enjoyed it better! My daughter chose mussels which were so overcooked the shells were so brittle and broke in her hand - she managed to eat three and couldn’t do it to herself. And birthday girl had the ( processed ) chicken ham wrap and mash was cold and tasteless and vegetables were cold!! The whole experience was poor and staff unprofessional with the manager sitting and eating close by calling a staff member over firmly and insisting he tried the steak he was eating “ eat it eat it!” The staff were not not all wearing masks and to finish off the lunch the chef decided to wear not two but one glove and as he put a burger on the counter for a table he then poked it several times with his finger of his hand that was not wearing a glove!! Disgrace. We left so disappointed ( they forgot to say bye). Spoilt my daughters birthday lunch and went over to Costa and my daughter had a panini as she was hungry and we drowned our disappointment with cake and coffee. Hate to write a bad review as things are tough out there for everyone but sometimes restaurants that are trying too hard are not great. The simple things are always more effective.

Food was nice but poor service

The food we had was very nice and the staff very friendly but unfortunately some of what we ordered was missing (our beer bites bowl had no chicken and my friend's burger had no caramelised onion). We asked for our chicken and the waitress said she would bring it but it never arrived, and they still charged for the missing onion, which we asked to have removed from the bill. The music was also very loud which meant we struggled to hear each other.

Very disappointed

Saw all the lovely photos on social media about this place thought we would give it a try as it was my husbands birthday. When we arrived we were given really tatty paper menus which needed to be thrown away. I ordered the fishcake for the starter it looked lovely. I cut it straight down the middle to discover it was cold. I sent it back and they did me another one. I again cut it straight down the middle it was cold again. I sent it back I had no apology. My husband and I both ordered a steak asking to be cooked medium it was well done and chewy! My sons dinner who is only 9 arrived 10 mins after our meals without any explanation. I had to call someone over and ask what’s going on. I just think they forgot to put it on. I didn’t want to make a fuss as I know we are in difficult times and it’s a new business which needs encouragement and a chance, but no I won’t be going back!

Unacceptable lack of service

Visited the area for the weekend and this restaurant appealed to us visually (had a very nice frontage with tables outside so a Mediterranean feel to it). Arrived at 7pm and by 10pm had only received starter and main courses. The service got worse as the evening dragged on. I think we were lucky to receive any food at all as many tables who arrived after us left after waiting 2 hours for any food at all. Bills were being discounted heavily and people walking out without paying. We ended up leaving at 10.30pm without dessert as not prepared to wait any longer! My Venison looked nice but was chewy! Drinks also took forever to arrive or were forgotten. My husband and I dine out 2-3 times a week and this has to be our worst experience to date. Lots of very angry and upset diners leaving without being fed and too late for anywhere else except to grab a take-away.

Wow what a shame

Been to Angelique 2-3 times before and although the service has been a little slow the food/drinks/atmosphere was fantastic. However last night was a different story. Booked a table for 8pm to be told that the restaurant was overbooked so we're seated upstairs which was not a problem. We waited a long time for a drinks order to be taken, then a good while later ordered some food. Everyone in the room apart from 2 couples were sat waiting for food. Approximately 2 hour after we arrived we started to see food arrive for a couple of the other tables. One table complained chicken was cold so sent it back, the table next to us sent their food back too as their rare steaks were like eating a tyre. Needless to say when they're meal returned the steaks still had tyre like qualities. They rejected the food and asked for the bill, the restaurant had still charged for the food! Whilst all this had gone on we had not seen our waitress, nor had we been apologised to for the wait. Finally 2.5hrs after arriving (now 10.30pm) the waitress came over to inform us our food was to be cooked and also to inform my husband he couldn't have the pork he ordered because it would take too long to cook! By this point we'd had enough and we're concerned about the quality of food we would be receiving. Us along with a couple of other tables decided to walk out. Definitely was a management issue here.you don't go to a restaurant and expect to leave it unfed! Really felt for the waiting staff as they were bearing the brunt of customer upset. We did ask to see a manager but was told there wasn't one on site.

This afternoon I had arranged to catch up with friends in order to have a spot of lunch. We had made a reservation, and once everyone had arrived we were sat waiting at our table for a good 20 minutes before we were asked if we wanted any drinks or if we were ready to order. Once we had eventually ordered, it was over an hour after the reservation before any food had arrived, and it was noticed that other groups that had arrived after us, had received their food before us. The choice of food on the menus we were supplied with (we had to ask for the set menu), there were little vegetarian options, and, from what I could see, only one vegan option (which when it arrived, came with butter containing dairy for the bread). Now for anyone who orders vegan food, it should be obvious that anything containing dairy shouldn't be included. That said, the quality of my meal in particular was very nice (aside from the butter), and the meal was tasty. The food my friends had was also very nice. The food all arrived at the same time, and no one was left waiting. When the dessert arrived however, one person was left waiting as her dessert didn't turn up. The three scoops of ice cream only arrived with two scoops, which had already started melting after being placed under the hot plate, so it is possible the third scoop had already melted by the time it arrived. Hardly any of the staff were smiling, there seemed to be little interaction between customers and staff, and we didn't have a single waiter, more a multitude of waiters, so we couldn't build up a nice rapport with the person serving us. In addition to that, in the current climate of the pandemic, it would probably be more advisable to have one waiter attending to a table at any one time to limit contact. On that note, there was little or no social distancing either, and I didn't see any signs or markings to assist customers like I have in most other restaurants. We were left feeling a little uncomfortable, almost unwelcome, although I am sure that was not the case at all, it was the perception given to us. The staff were walking around giving the impression they didn't want to be there, which with it being a very hot day, I can very much believe, but it really wasn't giving off a good impression to us. Only one waiter smiled at me as he brought my drink. I attended this restaurant with such promise, after seeing positive reviews, but I was left feeling a little dissatisifed. Whilst the food was delicious, for me it has to be about the whole experience, with the limited options available for those who are veggie or vegan, limits what some of us can expect, and it's just not for us, more options would be better. Unfortunately for me and my friends the experience was below average and gets a poor rating on this occasion. I'd like to be able to give It more because I enjoyed the food, but I can't, based upon the entire experience.

No longer even one up from Frankie and Bennys!

Having visited a few times and always had an enjoyable experience, our last visit was beyond disappointing and we are shocked at how downhill Angelique has gone!! It was Saturday early evening and we came for drinks and dinner to our pre booked table of 6. Chris greeted us in his usual polite manner but after that, it went downhill rapidly. Drink service was slow, staff had no idea what drinks we were even asking for and clearly need further training- half finished drinks were being taken away if you weren't careful and drinks were taking an age to arrive as it was! We ordered two sharing boards and then 6 mains and a side dish to follow. We waited over an hour - which seems common practise now having read other reviews but to our disbelief, our mains arrived. We explained we hadn't yet had our starters and the food left the table. A few minutes later, Chris came and explained it was a new menu and the kitchen was overwhelmed but if we didn't take our food, there would be another hour wait!! He said he would give us the sharing boards free and that the best option was to take the food all in one go! Unwilling to experience another wait, we agreed. The side dish never arrived and "The Best Steak in Town" medium rare steak was black and had to be sent back, leaving one member of our party with another wait! One member of our party was extremely ill after, we assume from the mussels as they were ready, then sent back, whilst they tried to find the starters and then the same ones must have been sent back out. We emailed Angelique explaining our bad experience the following day- not even a reply, let alone an apology!!

Not a great first impression

Unfortunately after really wanting to try this restaurant we were left very disappointed and won’t be returning. We went in for a birthday lunch and drinks. After seeing their photographs on social media we were all excited to try this place out. Not anymore.... From the very moment we walked in there was no organisation. We were given a breakfast menu at 12.15, granted they serve that until 4 but then I had to ask for a lunch menu, was given the set menu not realising there was a third menu we could have ordered from. Asked for a drinks menu, was given a dessert one. Again asked for a wine list... we felt like we were constantly asking for things that should have been done automatically. The poor waitress had no clue, clearly had no experience or training. She kept going to ask someone else. After finally having our orders in we waited for our starters. (Only 2 of us had starters) Mine arrived cold, one arrived a while later. We had to ask for more drinks but the waitress could not understand and was dismissive and so we asked for someone else. Mains came....mine was dropped. Steak missing tomatoes and mushrooms, one meal missing items, one chicken burger was undercooked, one meal was completely missed off our order so the main birthday guest had to wait. Chips then undercooked where they had missed them off and tried to quickly make them. Tomatoes and mushrooms arrived once we had eaten the cold steaks And o my because we reminded them again. Sauces and sides missing. Had to ask for replenished cutlery. Had to ask for sauces, no salt and pepper offered. Starters plates still sitting on the table even though we had our mains. Four members of staff flapping about trying to make sure we had everything and were satisfied. We weren’t. Still no check back, no one asked if we wanted to order more drinks Sat at the table a while once we had eaten. no one asked if we wanted desserts, all drinks sat empty, we weren’t asked if we wanted more so we got the bill and left. Most disappointing lunch out ever!

Went for the first time this weekend, wouldn’t return, ordered our food waited over 45 mins for it to arrive, whilst waiting the waitress came over and asked if I would like another drink walked off and didn’t ask my wife if she needed another drink. We had to ask if our food was nearly ready and was then bought out , obviously had been sitting under the heat lamp for god knows how long , was nearly cold and dry as a bone, had to send mine back as was too cold to eat. The steak was tough as old boots and could only be half eaten . It’s a shame really as it looks popular and has a good feel about it but the service and terrible food are not fit for purpose .
