The restaurant is located in a quiet courtyard not far from the river and main shopping centre. The conservatory can be opened up for summer dining but makes a pleasant bright location for lunch even in darkest January. Starters range from £7-£12, mains from £15 - £24 and deserts £7-£9. The food is well prepared, nicely presented and imaginatively cooked to provide a fine dining experience at a reasonable price. The menu has a good range of choice and there are daily specials to complement. I had the peanut and avocado Thai salad to start which was fresh, vibrant, attractive and tasty. My wife and our friend had the cheese souffle with side salad and chutney which they both thought excellent. For mains my wife and I had calves liver and bacon with a creamy potato puree and rich sauce. This was a wonderful heart warming dish for a cold day. It is so hard to find good calves liver in the UK but this was up to the best French standards. Wendy loved the grilled fish which had a perfect crispy skin. Treacle tart and stem ginger ice cream and a salted chocolate and caramel Paris Brest followed and both inspired. We rounded off with great coffee and proper mint tea. They have a good wine list which is reasonably priced. A good Viognier and a fine Domaine Lapeyre Jurnacon made the white wine choice very difficult, the Jurancon won out in the end. There is certainly something for everyone here as well as a good range of desert wines by the glass. Service is slick, discreet, professional and welcoming. Our last visit was two years ago, the same standards and quality apply there has been no slippage. Next time we are in the area we will be back and can recommend it to anyone without hesitation

This is a first class restaraunt with excellent service and wonderful food. From the moment we entered we were made to feel very welcome. There was only two waiting staff on duty and though there was a little wait it was well worth it. A dish f some sort of honey glazed seeds was on the table, and they were very pleasant. It did not take long for the first course to appear, mainly because at this time there were not many customers, but we both had soup and it was very hot and very tasty. We had to wait slightly longer for our main course as the restaraunt had filled up. However it was very good indeed. The first two courses filled us up so much that weren’t able to eat any more. It was a very nice birthday meal.

Third meal this year. Only been re open two days and practically full for lunch. Why you may ask. The food is top drawer, warm friendly service. The ingredients at this price point are breathtaking. Turbot, £27John Dory £22,Crab £11,Scallops £14. trio of beef sirloin, braised beef , cheek only £28. Generous portions, cooked by a former M star chef, served by equally experienced front of house team. We drive 80 mies to eat here. The table next to us drove 50 miles

We are regular visitors to Augustus and usually go there to celebrate family occasions. This time it was a delayed birthday celebration and we were looking forward to a superb meal after not being able to go out somewhere special for so long. Sadly the meal was not up to the usual standard and the prices had gone up a lot. One of the mains offered was a Provencal tart and another was sea bass with Provencal vegetables but, after ordering, we were told there were only enough Provencal vegetables for one main. I can understand not having an unusual ingredient if it has been popular but vegetables which are freely available at the supermarket a few yards away? The alternative tart was a mushroom tart which had obviously been throw together at the last minute and was completely basic - puff pastry with some mushrooms - the kind of thing you get in a cafe with salad at lunchtime. My daughter had the sea bass which was served with a small amount of cabbage as the alternative vegetable. I had the sea bass which was about £25 just for the main course and was a small piece of fish, two large chunks of courgette and one of aubergine and a fondant potato with a bland sauce - the kind of meal I could easily cook at home and for considerably less money. Other guests had a stilton and ale pie which was good but again the kind of meal you could have at a pub or at home at considerable less money. There were 5 of us and we had one bottle of wine and 3 after dinner drinks and a starter main and some of us had puddings and it was £250! The prices have definitely gone sky high. I have no problem restaurants charging more post Covid as they can have fewer diners but, as we don't go out often now as we don't want to take a risk going out unless it is a special occasion, you expect to get something really special for the price and something you can't cook at home and sadly this is no longer the case at Augustus and we won't be going again. Sad as we have been going there for so long.

In spite of the present situation and that the lunch time menu was shorter than usual there was a good choice on both starter, main and specials board. Tables are well spaced and screens are unobtrusively placed to conform with Covid-19 guidelines. For starters I had the smoked eel and my wife chose the soufflé . From the specials board we both had the slow roast duck which was a very generous portion. Our old favourite dessert of creme brûlée didn't disappoint. The wines are reasonably priced and we were recommended the carafe of Gran Rosso, not too heavy for lunchtime drinking.

My wife and I decided to try this restaurant in Taunton, from the reviews and indeed the appearance we felt that it is a cut above many of the other places here. We were certainly not disappointed, the welcome was slick and professional as well as being extremely friendly. We decided to forego a pre dining drink and went straight to the wine! Once again the wine selection lived up to expectations and the prices were fairly reasonable. I went for the menu fixe, whereas my wife selected the a la carte, both of us were extremely satisfied with our respective selections, my crab bisque followed by a lovely lemon sole on the bone was super and indeed the accompanying dished equally lovely. My wife selected scallops followed by monkfish satay said that hers was lovely. We both finished with lovely fresh brewed hot coffees a d really enjoyed the entire evening. The service was timeous and impeccable with sufficient timing to make it enjoyable

There's about 20 of us. Old timers, all wearing red socks as is our custom who spend the day out in a chosen town or city, sampling the local hostelries and finishing up with what we hope will be a superb lunch. We weren't disappointed with the Augustus. The service here was excellent - we even had name cards by our designated seats. The food was incredibly good, the ambience quite delightful. I've held back one star though. For this sort of quality - which doesn't come cheaply - I'd expect proper cloth napkins and not the paper variety. Other than that I thoroughly recommend Augustus.

Somerset is not blessed with a plethora of Michelin Restaurants so to get to this one called for a fair drive from where we were staying with friends, but it was worth it! Tucked away in a small courtyard the main building may well have been too small for a restaurant to have made it work but they have a large extension into the courtyard which must make it more viable. This is a proper extension, not some flimsy canvas and plastic affair so it has the right atmosphere. They have a good selection on the menu plus a set price board, perhaps the French influence here, their take on the Plat du Jour, and one can ‘mix and match’ from both and they then ‘adjust’ the price accordingly, accurately but confusingly! The wine list is extensive, to read it all carefully would take up most of lunchtime so you can guess there is plenty to pick from and all reasonably priced. I was designated driver but my guests declared the Picpoul de Pinet to be very drinkable - being on fizzy water I thought it would have been nice if they had lied! Two of us had the Lemon Sole, perfectly cooked ‘on the point’ as Rick Stein would say, and they came with a mix of vegetables and chips. “Chips!” I thought, “With Lemon Sole?” Well, yes, and they went together perfectly! My wife had a Mediterranean Tart and decided to replicate it at home (she once held an AA Rosette so will probably make a good fist of it) and the last guest had duck and declared it excellent. All in all an excellent lunch, the only downside is we live in Shropshire so a tad too far to just pop down to for lunch!

We enjoyed a delicious meal last Friday evening at Augustus. Although we had a time-limited table, we did not feel rushed at all. The menu options were flexible, the balance of choices was interesting with a taste of the familiar with some exciting twists. I chose mushrooms for starter followed by a classic Normandy stew. I was the driver so had a small taste of the wine and my fellow diners were treated to some wonderful wine choices. The cheese board was spectacular! Of merit was the attentive service. Really highly recommended.

My wife and I visited Augustus for the very first time as a birthday treat for her last weekend and we were absolutely delighted. We arrived at exactly the time booked and were instantly offered the choice of two tables. We chose to eat in their glass sided conservatory which was bright and clean and felt very inviting. Being off the main drag in a small courtyard there were very few passing pedestrians which made it feel quite private and intimate. Their fixed menu was very reasonably priced and interesting, but we chose to eat from the a la carte menu that had six diverse starters and six quite different main courses on offer. I can honestly say that the food was some of the best I have ever eaten and my wife agreed. Their Michelin rating is completely deserved and I would recommend it to anyone. I had seared scallops that were absolutely perfect followed by slow roasted duck that was sublime. My wife had a lovely cheese soufflé, followed by roast lamb rump steak. Everything was beautifully presented and certainly not meagre portions. We had intended to share a cheese board but were simply too full and we opted for their homemade sorbet and ice-cream that was fabulous. Staff were very polite and attentive without being intrusive. Really can't find anything negative to say about the whole experience. I hope someone takes me there for my birthday. One word of warning, an evening sitting needs to be booked about 6 weeks in advance and lunchtime at least two. They are fully booked every day and rightly so. You will not be disappointed, unless perhaps you are vegetarian/vegan where the selection quite limited. Otherwise, I can't see how anyone could not find their food truly exquisite.

This is an excellent restaurant. Cedric, the owner, is a wonderful restaurateur. We requested a table at 8pm but as one wasn't availabe at this time he offered us 9pm. On the day a cancellation came in and he called to offer us our originally requested time. I thought this was a lovely gesture. The same high quality of service was apparent throughout our meal. The restaurant offers an a la carte menu as well as a prix fixe menu. We really had trouble chosing what to have as everything looked excellent. In the end we had a combination from both menus. I had a prawns special dish as a starter, which was phenomenal. For mains, the vension was superb and the fish of the day fresh and tasty. Although we were the last in the restaurant, we weren't made to feel unconfortable or chased out. We finished our meals and drinks and left feeling like we'd had great value for money.

I very rarely write a review on TA but last night Augustus exceeded our expectations. When we arrived at 7.45 (Wednesday) for our booking we were told we had actually booked for tonight (Thursday). We were very disappointed as my sister and husband had come from Bristol to take us out. We were told there were no free tables but they would see what they could do. Ten minutes later we were sat at a table for four people that they had put together. We had a lovely meal as always with their flair for producing lovely food. My brother in law described his cauliflower cheese as the best he has ever had and was blown away by the cheese board. Best of all though was the wonderful service and the fact that they had been so accommodating with the error over the booking. Thank you Augustus - hope you stay in business for many years to come!

Visited here for dinner and our first visit as we were staying at the castle hotel nearby. The menu is inter3sting and varied with a few dishes for people who like to explore new items For example I had the smoked eel for a starter which was lovely and tasty, something I would not normally find whilst eating out, my wife had the cheese soufflé which was also great. Main courses were pollack which arrived with breadcrumbs which wonderful and light and another course which was the veal which came in rosemary sauce and a cream sauce with asparagus which combined was excellent The price are reasonable but near the 28 pound main course are with starters around 11 pounds. The toilets are individual and private, modern very clean with nice toiletries The venue is in a small private courtyard and dinner was in a conservatory, the service was very good attentive and professional and tips are discretionary . Could not fault anything

Visited here for lunch ahead of my birthday 'get away' and I cant praise it enough! Having been influenced by the recent Jay Rayner review; it was a 'must' try, & we are so glad we did. The staff greet you with smiles, very accommodating & hugely passionate about the restaurant & the excellent menu's on offer. The two or three course lunch menu is very reasonably priced & uses locally sourced & seasonal produce. A well considered menu, with 'Specials' available too, what is nice is that you can mix & match from the A La Carte if desired. We opted for the Liver starter, which was so smooth, melt in the mouth & served pink, on hot buttered Toast - delicious. The second course was the infamous Somerset Faggots, served with Greens & an Onion Gravy. This was an outstanding dish of pure offaly genius, & the Onion Gravy was superb; caramelised, oniony, heaven! Overall a fantastic lunch, excellent service & exceptional food. Thank you

We were looking for somewhere to take our friends for dinner as a thank them for our staycation with them. Augustus was recommended so we went ahead and booked asking if we could bring their dog - which was fine in the outside courtyard area. We had a warm and friendly greeting when we arrived and our friends' dog was immediately brought a bowl of water which was a lovely touch. Two of us had the roast scallops as a starter and the other two had Asian style salad. For the mains I had the special, calves liver with bacon - which was perfectly cooked. Two of my companions had plaice, again perfectly cooked, and the other one had the sea-bass. The ingredients are all locally sourced which is good to know. The service was professional but also very friendly and welcoming. We all thoroughly enjoyed our evening there and I'll definitely go back next time I am in Taunton. Very highly recommended.
