We had the takeaway fish and chips last Friday and it was without question the best fish and chip supper for years. The cod was perfectly cooked in a delicious, light batter which, along with the chips, stayed piping hot and really crispy on the short journey home. Simply perfect. In these extremely difficult times it is wonderful to have a local business striving to cater for the needs of the community. The team at the Red House deserve as much support as possible and we will certainly be back this week for more.

Ordered a three course takeaway last night for our wedding anniversary. When phoning the order in a couple of days in advance the lady who answered was helpful and friendly, when I arrived it was ready for collection within minutes and the food was lovely - good quality and well packaged. Well done to all the team for making such a success during these hard times. We hope to visit the pub when you can open again and certainly order another takeaway in the meantime!

I think we must have come after a busy weekend as my first 3 choices were unavailable. I ended up having a Rumpsteak burger. I assumed it was a rump steak in a bun, but what came was a very rare (very pink) mince burger which I was not so keen on. The staff were really nice and took the burger and replaced it with a cooked through one. The burger meat was very nice and maybe I didn’t see on the menu that it came as ‘rare’ (didn’t have my glasses on) Very good service and very friendly and helpful staff

One of the best meals we have had in a long time. We went last weekend for lunch and were warmly welcomed by friendly staff. We were allocated a table in a very picturesque sunny front garden with a wide array of flowers really giving off the impression that summer had arrived already. I had the duck confit which was beautifully cooked served with gratin potatoes and green beans accompanied by an exceptional red wine gravy. My father opted to try something new and went for the mushroom and haloumi burger served with sweet potato fries and house slaw which he thought was a fantastic combination in terms of the actual burger and the meal altogether. Service was prompt and overall it was a very pleasant dining experience, will definitely come again!

The title of this review sums it up perfectly! We were staying nearby and booked ahead based on the previous reviews mentioned in this forum. We were met by Katie who is one side of a husband and wife team who run this independent pub and restaurant. So refreshing to find! The food is fabulous! So good we had the same meal two nights in a row. I had Nachos to start and the best well cooked Rib Eye Steak with the usual accessories and the perfect green salad (so fresh). My wife had the thickest Tuna Steak we have seen in ages. Apparently after talking to locals, the Red House is also famous for its Pizzas with cars arriving every 10 minutes to pick up their boxes. Katie was backed up by Maggie and Harriet and all three provided slick, smooth service of this lovely food, with smiles and humour. Overall a fabulous experience with great atmosphere! One tip, get there early as the car park fills up quickly and a three minute cab ride from somewhere VERY local cost £25 each way. SCANDALOUS!!!. Fixed price apparently! A true bargain if you lived in Sunderland!

We have been going here for years and I just wanted to give it another thumbs up after the long Covid spell. Simon and Katy have helped the local community get through the dregs of Covid lockdown by having an excellent take away service. Nothing was too much trouble for them and hats off to them for being creative and resourceful during that trying time. They really helped the local community by their hard work in giving people the opportunity to have an excellent meal cooked for them. The take away menu was delicious and varied and all the food cooked to perfection. Now that things have reopened, this friendly pub continues to impress with the most delicious home cooked food. Charles, who is the sort of Maitre D', is a most delightful chap! The whole team is fantastic and makes everyone feel at home. This is a really fun pub with a great vibe and great food!

WOW! Warm, friendly, kind, helpful staff! The food was delicious! We highly enjoyed the curry special: Butternut squash/spinach/chickpea curry with both rice and naan bread, 15.75₤ The curry was delicious, fresh flavors, veg not overcooked, rice was perfect (not oily). The goat cheese salad was well balanced, a lovely balsamic reduction, fresh/warm cheese, sultans (aka raisins), apple slivers, walnuts all on fresh picked lettuce leaves. Perfection! Excellent GF options. I left with a smile on my face. Exceptional lunch AND outstanding service! You can't beat that! We look forward to returning.

Super welcoming friendly pub restaurant with lovely food. We both had the home made Pizza with the homemade slaw and both ordinary fries and sweet potato fries. We both agreed how nice the pizzas were and it would appear quite famous in these parts.

We stopped by after a busy evening locally and were met with a warm, friendly welcome. Food was spot on - my mushroom and halloumi burger 🍔 was cooked to perfection, they even went out of they way to make a little salad with things I could eat to replace the slaw. My fiancés steak burger was also perfectly cooked (pink just his he likes it) with delicious chips and peppercorn sauce on the side. Nothing was too much trouble and great drinks on tap too.

Met a friend here for lunch. We both had pizza, which was deliciously thin and crispy, followed by a nice dessert of lemon posset. However the best part of it was the service. Our waitress was so friendly ,efficient and thoughtful, ensuring that she took our orders ahead of a large party who had also just sat down. When I asked for garlic oil, instead of the Chilli oil that was in the table, she arranged for some to be made up and brought out from the kitchen. Highly recommended.

Came here for dinner and drinks. Our dog barked at someone out of the window and the owner came straight over and told him off. I wouldn't have minded if he had barked for a long time and was bothering other customers, but he hadn't even been barking more than a couple seconds before she was asking us if he was going to be like that for much longer. We asked what she meant and she said she was going to have a full restaurant and if he wasn't going to settle then we'd have to leave. This was all over the course of a couple of minutes, when we'd barely even sat down. We felt so unwelcome and unfairly treated, and won't be coming back. You enjoy your "full restaurant" that I doubt will stay full much longer with attitudes like that. P.S. If a dog is misbehaving, talk to the owners first, don't have a go at the dog who is doing what dogs do.

My brother and his wife met with us at the Red House for a pre-Christmas lunch, not being able to meet up later because of concerns over Covid. Katie and Simon made us feel very comfortable and unhurried. The food was excellent with a choice of the daily menu or a la carte of either 2 or 3 courses. My brother enjoyed his pint of Timothy Taylor's bitter while the ladies enjoyed a white wine spritzer. We enjoyed French Onion soup, battered King Prawns and pate followed by 2 swordfish steaks, a Curry and red pepper with lentils and goat:s cheese as well as deserts and coffee. Altogether a very pleasant experience on a miserable day when coffee in front of the fire was an enjoyable way to finish a lovely relaxed meal. Thank you John and Gay

My elderly parents’ favourite restaurant. The food is always superb. The service fantastic. On two occasions when my Dad has been in Hospital, they have sent food parcels, contacted me to let me know there are concerns, arranged for my Mum to be picked up and brought in so they can make sure she’s eating. Then arranged to get her to the Hospital afterwards when the family haven’t been able to…. The list goes on. They really are wonderful people, who are more like family now. As a business they serve home grown, fresh, home cooked produce. It’s always tasty and beautifully cooked. The ambience in the restaurant is always relaxed and friendly. Can’t recommend them highly enough…… on every level possible!

As always when venturing into new territory, looked at TA for advice. One of our party is vegetarian and the menu here had more options than other places we checked out. It was a dull wet day but the welcome was warm, helped by a log burner. As expected, the menu did not disappoint, and portions were generous. Good job 2 were sharing for the nachos starter, as very generous! Mushroom and halloumi burger was a good choice for 2 of us, with traditional burger and a pizza for the others. We were all too full for a dessert but menu showed a good range of traditional puddings, so may have to forego a starter next time. Nothing at all negative to say, quite the opposite in fact. We had no problem parking but maybe when busier not so easy, but not knowing the area well, maybe easy to park nearby if car park full.

Travelling down from Oxford we were about 10 miles from the wedding venue & we found The Red House We had enough time for a comfort stop, drink & something to eat The only shame was we couldn’t stay for longer. Staff were friendly, welcoming & helpful as were the locals too. Highly recommend for anyone
