About
The concept is a simple one, loads of really good food in a beautiful rustic setting with the cooking being done over wood fires, in smokers or charcoal. Most of the electricity is generated on site through solar panels and a wind turbine but don’t let the rustic nature of the place mislead you, the focus is very much on producing a feast that will knock your socks off. The menu is created on the day to suit the tastes of the guests and the weather using the very best produce available on the day. Bring an appetite, there is a lot of food, don’t expect lots of dainty courses with a drizzle of this and a foam of that, expect a table packed with loads of dishes to share, it’s Christmas gone mad.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This was a very unique and enjoyable evening, filled with excellent food and good company. The food was very tasty and of gourmet standard, with plenty to fill even the largest of appetites. The setting was magical , like a romantic medieval banquet. Candle lit...and rustic. There's not many restaurants where you can converse with the chef whilst he cooks in front of you. Thank you Hugh for a very special evening.More

Everything that I had read about. Fabulous setting off the beaten track, really chilled pace to the evening and then the food... An impressive spread doesn't really do it justice. If you are looking for a different, refreshing dining experience then you will struggle to...better this.More

Just wow. A culinary feast with a very talented and humble chef. It was remarkable how much Hugh did by himself, the food just kept on coming and was some of the best food I had ever tasted. Rib of beef, the most incredible artichoke...and truffle tart, massive chunks of cheese, it was such a lovely surprise to not know what was going to be put down on the table. You share dishes with others on the table, it was lovely to talk to everyone. Just hope that you’re in the same night as people who really appreciate the concept and the talent on show, because it’s such an amazing shared experience. We will be back with family and friends, totally worth the 2 hour drive.More

More of a banquet than a meal. Hugh is a fantastic chef who provided a vast range of food (delicious meat, vegetarian, pescatarian, and gluten-free dishes). The mushroom bread and butter pudding with mushroom sauce, and the harissa stood out for me. The icing on...the cake was the take away boxes at the end. [Remind me to skip the marshmallows next time!]More

What a night. From the minute we arrived until the minute we left we absolutely loved the experience. The food was delicious, packed with rustic flavours and great ambience. We sat at a table with people we could chat away with whilst enjoying each others...company too. This isn’t just a meal it’s an experience. Thank you Hugh for a brilliant nightMore

First visit to this interesting restaurant. Hugh is a great cook and host, he single handedly served a delicious array of imaginative courses while managing to chat to this guests. The rustic barn/shed had great atmosphere and my group of four were lucky to be...joined by other guests who shared our love of food which made conversation flow as everyone sits at one large table. Very good value for money and even better it's BYO.More

Hugh cooked for me, my wife and her parents last week, as always, a superb meal spaced over a civilised interval - no succumbing to the fast food dogma here! It's still a rare treat to be able to chat to the chef while he...cooks and serves and Hugh is invariably excellent company. We'll be visiting again as soon as we can.More

We visited this restaurant after seeing all the amazing reviews on Trip Advisor. I totally agree that Hugh is very welcoming and does an amazing job at singlehandedly cooking, serving and washing up, but we both found the food distinctly underwhelming. I didn't feel that...the dishes complimented each other at all; the starters consisted of rice, beetroot, pickled carrot, cold duck breast together with a hot chicken dish. It just seemed totally random. I think maybe that the whole experience is better in the summer, when you can take in the views and appreciate the 'off grid vibe' a bit more. But personally, I wouldn't recommend it on a dark wet November night.More

This is one of the best meals I have ever eaten. Hugh manages to cook, wash up and serve a multi course gastronomic feast without batting an eyelid. Course after course came out and every single one was fantastic. Everything about this evening was great...and I cannot recommend highly enough. Go hungry as the quantity of food is impressive. We kept telling ourselves we couldn’t eat another thing but managed to keep going. Takeaway boxes for any left over food - what’s not to love. This is a genuine foodie gemMore

Searched online for something different. And boy did we find it!! We arrived early, and was welcomed in with a cheery smile and a warm greeting. The food was delivered in waves. Stunning plate after stunning plate. Huge chunks of slow cooked pork, to home...made rosemary bread, to roast beef sirloin. And plenty inbetween. All cooked to perfection, and masses of it. Our 13 year old can eat for all of us, and Hugh accepted the challenge. The rum sticky toffee pudding was divine, and my son was presented with 2!! He could only manage 1 - 1/2. 1-0 to Hugh! He did however, recover his appetite in time for the toasted marshmallows. A wonderful experience, with wonderful food, and a perfect host/chef. Made even more remarkable as the usual help was not available so the entire night was covered by one, remarkable man. Touché. And thank you. Would highly recommend.More
