Impromptu visit for birthday lunch - friendly greeting and immediately seated with menu. Excellent choice of food - so glad we ordered the pigeon breast salad - it was delicious! Pudding didn’t disappoint - luckily they managed to find a portion of chocolate /salted caramel...cake - essential for birthday treat!! Relaxed lunch with friendly attentive service - respectful of space. Highly recommended - thanks.More

a lot of negative reveiws on prices ,some around where i live on wirral are getting the same , theyve all had a terrible time recentley and a lot are still suffering and if we dont support them where will we be able to go?...Wages and food and animal feed all gone up. We went 2 nights running sat by the roaring fire wife had the most delicious steak and i had the fish pie which was beautiful good size portions, i had a few dunkertons black fox cider omg lush. The young girl and the lad who were serving on took our orders and we were served in no time at all they re working harder as instead of taking orders at bar they have to wait the tables and they never stopped. Great staff , great pub great food love the placeMore

I will start by saying the food was good and you did get a half decent portion..But £18.20 for a roast and £22 for a pie and chips takes the mickey. The staff were even cringing at the prices and were saying they don't know...how they get away with it.More

Up here for the day. We had already eaten in the Swan, so just called in for a drink! The overzealous barman followed us to the table and asked what we wanted! I ordered a pint of lager and a coffee, came to £7.10! The...coffee was lukewarm. The food menu was exotic to say the least and the prices sky high! Customers that WERE eating seemed to be waiting ages for their meals! To say it was the week before Xmas it was dead, and now I now why!More

I am pretty surprised at the negative reviews as we had a very pleasant meal for three here. It's a little bit pricy but it's Hay on Wye so there is a tourist premium, that's just life. Very young staff team, a bit scatty but...friendly and polite. Food was really nice. I had Wild Boar stew and it was grand, portions weren't huge, but perfectly sufficient. Sad to people knocking it at what is a tough time for hospitality as I was very happy with my experience here.More

As a resident and someone who works in Hay on Wye, decided to go for lunch today after work as it was the Xmas market and felt like getting in the festive spirit. What a mistake! We were seated straight away and food orders taken,...we both had dishes we have had many times before on previous visits. After over an hour we asked where our food was, apologies were given and they said they would chase it up. My food arrived, and what a disappointment. I had ordered wedges in a Stilton and bacon sauce as I have had it previously and it was delicious. But today I was served a jacket potato cut in to four chunks, not wedges at all. I complained only to be told that’s what we give you, a jacket potato cut up, always have done. This was incorrect as I said I had had wedges several times before. My husbands food did not arrive, and after waiting a while we chased it up again. When it arrived that too was very disappointing. We were given a refund but couldn’t believe how much the standards had gone down. On walking back to the car park we saw the waiter running back to the Blue Boar from Hay Cafe carrying food which was obviously for people at the pub! Maybe that explains my husbands cold food. Sorry tried to support local, but never again.More

We have been regular clients of the Blue Boar for 15 years, it used to be our favourite pub anywhere. Standards here have been steadily declining. Our last visit on a Saturday night was extremely disappointing. The quality of the meal could not be faulted,...however the portions were very small and wow was it overpriced. Menu choices are restricted, only three desserts, delivered orally, no written dessert menu available. I have never seen the pub so empty on a weekend night, many others must share our views.More

We visited on market day so bound to be busy. Barman was friendly but clearly needed some more staff. We ordered Welsh rarebit as thought it must be good due to the location. It was basically a white bap covered in cheese sauce. Very disappointing,...not even proper bread. Expensive too. The chips were very good and a nice latte. Rarebits much better back home in Suffolk.More

Popped in on a Sunday afternoon for lunch, the food was lovely but I do think it’s overpriced. We paid £10 for a small bowl of nachos. Staff were friendly and service was a little slow but nothing too bad.
