Nice bar staff, but even though we were told it wasn't a busy night the service was hopelessly slow between courses. And there was no apology when asked. Food was good but not great and pricey for what it was (London pub prices for some mains). It clearly has a reputation with local people and the atmosphere is characterful without... More

We have just moved into Hay and the Blue Boar is the closest pub to us. Went in with family on Saturday for lunch, only ordered sandwiches and a couple of bowls of chips but seemed to take ages to be served. However most enjoyable when it came. We have been back since as it is a dog friendly place,... More

We stopped in here for a bite to eat on a busy bank holiday. The staff were really friendly and helpful in finding a table but we didn't get any indication of how long food would be. We only ordered light bites so was expecting it to be fairly quick but it took awhile. The food was very good when... More

We stayed at the Black Mountain View campsite... so we strolled 45 mins into Hay... Whilst wandering around we fell upon the Blue Boar... unassuming from the outside, and a traditional pub on the inside. Good choice of ales & wine... so we stayed and tasted a couple. We glanced over the menu and decided to book a table. We... More

After a recommendation by my daughters I decided to give the Blue Boar Sunday Roast a try. Great home cooked food served by very polite young staff who were always on hand to get you anything required. Scarlet who was running the whole pub was the best multi tasking bar person I have ever seen, taking orders, cash, making coffees... More

Visited here Saturday lunchtime, nit very busy. Bar staff were friendly but a little slow to serve us. The menu was a little boring, usual pub grub. I had gammon, egg and chips which were cooked well, although I'm not sure why you get a few salad leaves with it! My wife doesn't eat meat and the choice was limited.... More

We were only in Hay for the day to visit the bookshops and we popped in here for a bit of lunch and we were so impressed we decided to go back for an evening meal. The staff were friendly, there was an impressive selection of beers and ciders, including four hand pulled varieties and the food, though simple, was... More
