My wife and I were in Hay for a weekend and she booked this for us one evening. As others have said it's in a central position but only open 2 evenings a week. The dining room is small, with tables quite close together. It's a beautifully simple menu. Only 3 choices per course. We started with an alcoholic and... More

Superb freshly prepared food. Brilliant flavour combinations. Limited menu but excellently chosen. Well worth trying something you wouldn't normally choose as there is always an extra twist to her food that manages to make the simplest thing exceptional.

An excellent meal after a long day shopping for books. Since we didn't plan ahead, we had to wait for an opening for a late dinner in this always-booked 24-seat restaurant. Once we got our food, we understood why. In a party of 3, we managed to order every dish on the menu (every appetizer, starter, and entree) and everyone... More

Was not sure if made the right decision when first looked at the menu but that was certainly not the case. Each dish that we ordered was thoughtfully put together and the ingredients and flavour were superb ! We chose Skirt Steak for the main dish - absolutely wonderful !!! I have paid 3 times the cost of this meal... More

A great start to our evening was a delicious quince and rose martini with cardamom cashews to munch on. We were then blown away by the sage and anchovy fritters which couldn't have been a better introduction to what was to come next. Great to go here as a group of three so that we could order all three of... More

The food certainly did the talking in what felt like a pop-up space, natural and down-home. Perfect hake after a sardine starter. The hake was delicious, but the vegetables and flavours around it were what made it totally special. One of the best meals I've had in recent times. Great relaxed service too from Kate..

Just left St John's Place - great meal! Quality ingredients, thoughtfully put together and beautifully cooked. The sImple style allows the food to be the star, which is as it should be. Altogether a lovely dinner and very good value. If you get the chance visit!

My husband chose this restaurant based on the reviews on this site to celebrate my birthday. Let me begin by emphasising that the food was excellent. Really delicious. However, the portions were quite large so the next time we eat there I will skip appetisers because having eaten both an appetiser and a starter by the time I got to... More

Really innovative food served in an old chapel right in the centre of Hay. Some people struggled to find the entrance though the large window with a crane in it shows you are on the right track. Selection of three choices for most courses including a vegetarian option. You are left overcome by the deliciousness and unable to name all... More

We really enjoyed every aspect of our vege meal. Superb and creative! My wife would have preferred a little more choice, but if the choose-any-vege-dish-you-like-as-long-as-it-is-the-one-we-are-offering-tonight policy produces food this good, well... St John's Place has a pretty good compromise between variety and quality, to my way of thinking. Our two non-vege friends also thought the food was great, and one... More
