On the recommendation of friends we travelled 20 miles to visit the White Horse for lunch. We had a friendly greeting on arrival and the staff were attentive throughout. The whole pub had a pleasant ambiance. We ate from the Set Lunch Menu : a choice of two starters, four mains, and two desserts. Each item was tempting and food was first class.Three courses on the Set Menu were £15...an absolute bargain We had not booked, and was just as well that we arrived about 12:00 because by 1.00pm the place was 90% full.

We stopped here for a quick dinner on way home along the M40 (about 10 mins drive from motorway). It was probably more “high end” than we anticipated given we were with our 9 and 11 year old children and our dog, but the service and delicious food were amazing. Clean plates all round, and very swift service - we were back on the road within an hour, and only sad to not be able to stay for dessert. Mains weren’t cheap (£15-£20) but we got a very tasty complimentary appetiser so overall good value for money.

Met a friend here for a lovely lunch - nice atmosphere and a convenient place to meet halfway between Rugby and Aylesbury! A couple of the items on the set menu were not available, which just left a veggie option which we didn't fancy, so we went a la carte, which was pricey, but well worth it. We both had the celeriac main with some thick double-cooked chips and some winter greens and it was really delicious. Will definitely go back there before too long!

This highly regarded restaurant has long been a favourite of ours, but seems to have dropped the ball recently. We took friends on Saturday but (maybe because it was the Platinum Jubilee weekend) the pub had booked a singer who started at 8, exactly as we sat down to eat. Rather than 'background music' this capable vocalist belted out huge ballads and show songs at a deafening level. Not only could we barely hear each other talk across the table, the waiting staff couldn't hear anything either. In such a small venue it was an odd decision. Smaller niggles included the white wine not being chilled and the cooler not being cold (our guests added ice to their wine), one guest asked for Dijon mustard but was told there wasn't any, and the duck dish was served on a grey sludge which remained uneaten. On the positive side, the moules and rotisserie chicken were both excellent. We didn't stay for desert (as the singer was so loud) and for 5 of us the bill was £215 (with a tip). This seems expensive for a below-par experience.

The White Horse had warm and welcoming staff, a roaring fire in the bar and a comfortable modern but rural restaurant. The service was great, friendly servers who knew the menu and answered our questions and checked frequently that our food and experience was good. The food itself was delicious and the unexpected surprise of complimentary amuse bouche, fresh warm bred and flavoured butters were exceptionally good. We all enjoyed our beautifully presented tasty and substantial starters, the omelette Arnold Bennett and the beetroot tart were top notch. Mains were equally good although those having pie requested more gravy, which was cheerfully dispensed! No room for puds this time, but home made petit fours rounded off the lunch perfectly. For informal but very high quality food and service I would highly recommend The White Horse based upon this visit.

One of the best Sunday lunch that we had for a long time!!! The bread was very tasty and the home made butter with marmite was very good, even though I am not the biggest fan of marmite. The beef, the mushroom pithivier and all the accompaniments were spot on!!! The waitresses made us also feel very relaxed without the service being over the top. Only critisism that I have is the honey sorbet should have been smoother for me. Well done Chef

We had lunch with friends at the White Horse on Saturday. Excellent experience that exceeded our expectations. Courteous, friendly and knowledgable staff and food that was not only delicious but presented in a way that showed both an enviable attention to detail and significant creativity. The beer was also good! We will be back!

After two years forced absence and positive memories of excellent food before ,we were looking forward to having lunch with friends before visiting a local garden . We were grateful that in a small village the business has survived . We were offered a table 'd'hote menu with a few la carte choices . Between us we had a fair spread of dishes . Unfortunately we were misled about some of the dishes in nature and volume . Beetroot salad was more cream cheese with a minuscule amount of beetroot and served in a huge bowl to show how minimal it was .'Mussels in Beer 'was about four mussels and little else . The risotto again served in a large bowl was about eight spoonfuls . One pat of butter for four people continued the theme . The lemon thyme custard was a thin layer ( not enough to taste ) smothered with blackberry jam and lumps of crumble . However the lamb pie was excellent , the service was friendly and the shop with local produce much appreciated . One of our party left hungry and overall it was bad value for money .

Five of us went to the White Horse on a Thursday evening in June to celebrate a friend's 'milestone' birthday from last October! Service was without fault and the table and setting beautfiully staged. We all had the Support Local 7 Course Menu. Wonderful dishes with amazing presentation. Clearly a lot of thought and time had gone into every course. You just got a small portion as would be expected in a taster menu, but with seven different course, it was plenty. For the quality of the service, ambience, faultless dishes, I thought the cost was very reasonable. Would highly recommend and will definitely return.

Had dinner here last night for two special birthday's in our family. Found the service rather unfriendly and impersonal, and as for the vegetarian main (which I message to ask in advance, no response, then had to ring to find out as there are no vegetarian meals listed on the menu! Such hassle and effort just to find out something so basic these days) it was just so bland, and as per the title of the review, unremarkable. Peppers stuffed with cous cous that had zero flavour. I make better myself. They are nicely presented but that's about it. A fellow member of our party had a delicious looking fish dish but I can't say any of us were overly impressed to the point we discussed the meal afterwards! The biggest sticking point and disappointment for me was the fact that we alerted the restaurant in advance that we were there for both a joint 30th and 60th birthday meal. As standard with many restaurants, upon booking we were asked if we had any special requests for the meal. My partner mentioned that the meal was booked for both a 30th and 60th, which they were well aware of. Generally, when you let a restaurant know that you are there for an occasion, they will make at least SOME effort to mark the event, even if it's something as basic as bringing out a brownie on a plate with the words 'Happy Birthday' around it in chocolate! We had absolutely nothing. No acknowledgement in any shape or form. I realised once the bill came that that was it, they were going to do anything. I found this a little embarrassing given my partner and I brought both his Mum and sister there especially for their birthday. Won't be going here again - there are other places to try, that will put more time and effort into both their food and experience for their customers.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and feedback on your recent visit with us at The White Horse. We regret to hear that we have missed the mark on your meals and vegetarian option. We are also sorry that you found the team unfriendly and that your Birthdays weren't acknowledged, this was a miscommunication on our part that I sincerely apologise for. We do endeavour to make each visit memorable and special for our guests and should you wish to revisit I will make sure I am there personally to ensure this. We are introducing our Spring menu in the next week with has additional Vegan and Vegetarian dishes available, we have made large changes to the entire menu so would welcome you back to try our hospitality again. I will pop the menu online once available. Our team is also growing and learning as they're all new so we hope you will give us another opportunity in the future. Kind regards, Hannah Dickson

We visited yesterday and had the 3 course Sunday lunch which is very good value and such a high standard of food. All 4 of us thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the service was fantastic too, we were served by Ella and she was very attentive. We are all looking forward to revisiting in the future and will certainly be recommending it to our friends and family. Thanks again!

As the previous owners Michelin food pictures are being used on the new website we thought we’d be in for a decent meal and service. We also waited a good month before going to let them settle in. Sadly we had a terrible experience that just kept on giving throughout our meal, it’s overpriced for what you get and some really odd things happened. I was given a bowl of cold water with ice cubes in it to rinse my fingers with my mussel dish (this should be at least room temperature, it’s quite painful dipping your fingers in iced water). My main course had a huge mound of red cabbage that filled most of the plate (this was meant to be a side to a duck leg), dauphinois was black on the bottom. My husbands food didn’t even match the description on the menu. He ordered blade of beef with horseradish mash, bordelaise sauce and crispy shallots. He received beef that seemed to be warmed up in the ‘borderlaise’ sauce, mashed potato without horseradish (horseradish was spread all over the top of the beef), the sauce wasn’t a borderlaise in any way, colour, taste or form, and the crispy shallots was a whole untrimmed banana shallot deep fried in batter. We didn’t bother with dessert it was so poor and badly executed and cost nearly £100 (starters, main and a few glasses of wines). Why didn’t we say anything on the day? Well, there was just so many things wrong, (more than spoken about above) that we would have constantly been in dialogue and not trying to enjoy ourselves. Additionally, these aren’t tweaks that can be easily rectified or resolved on the day, these are more systemic of bad kitchen and staff operation. The staff didn’t seem adequately trained to have dealt with it or turned it into a positive experience. We won’t be returning.

Good morning, Thank you for your feedback and we appreciate your opinion. We have addressed the images on the website and these will be replaced. We are awaiting a photographer to visit the pub once our re-brand is finalised (next week) so were kindly able to use the old images until that takes place. I appreciate if the website proved confusing with the old food shots, this was not our intention. As mentioned this will be updated today. As I'm sure was obvious based on your feedback, we are not trying to be a Michelin star pub. Our aim is to be a gastro village pub and we hope our offer and team reflect this. We are still fairly new to the pub, the previous owners were here for 8 years so I'm sure you can appreciate they had slightly more time to perfect their service and team. We are learning everyday what the village wants from it's local pub and are doing our best to achieve this, sadly based on your comments, we can't please everyone and have more work to do. I'm sure we will work through any teething issues you may have experienced during your visit. We hope you'll visit us again and appreciate our hospitality for what we hope to be, a lovely, village pub. Again many thanks and I apologise that you were dissatisfied with your experience. Best wishes, Hannah Dickson

We have been keen to visit this pub for a long time but it was always fully booked, we managed however to book online for a Sunday lunch, we found out the pub has just been taken over my new owners this weekend. We ordered two roast beef meals at £17 each. Both were stone cold when they arrived. We have never had to send something back for being that cold before... They replaced them, even the second time elements like the cauliflower cheese was still cold and a very cold Yorkshire pudding ( I know a Yorkshire will loose it's heat but this was fridge cold). The potatoes at least were hot the next time. Overall though the taste was disappointing, potatoes were not crispy, no taste of honey glazed on the carrots and one of mine was burnt black. Even the horseradish sauce was cold from the fridge. Although the waitress apologised and told us she had informed management when they came over the was no apology or mention of it from them. Sorry to say we will not be back and do not recommend this pub.

Thank you very much for your review and we sincerely apologise that you didn't enjoy your Sunday lunch. We can only apologise as we have only just opened for food service (the same weekend as your visit) and are obviously having a few teething issues. We were incredibly busy all weekend and the team are all new to the pub/equipment, we obviously missed the mark with your meals so again we are very sorry. We hope you'll give us another chance with a visit and we can ensure your experience will be much improved once we settle in. Kindest regards, Hannah

Visited the White Horse for my birthday (second year running) and again found it to be of the same high standard we experienced before, excellent food and lovely staff! However, We did find that it took a long time to clear our plates and offer a desert menu after we had finished our main. Maybe it was just a busy night. Although, was a lovely experience overall and will definitely be visiting again in the near future.

As a Brackley resident for the past 40 years we've been absolutely spoiled and grateful to have this lovely pub around the corner. And this was our first visit. A party of six of us with 5 choosing the Autumn taster menu and one reluctantly having the a la carte. Service was high quality and the draft beer, Breakspear Gold well kept. Highlights for me were the Pickled Quail Egg in Onion Ash, Salt Pig Charcuterie and Oxford Gold Beer & Cobblers Nibbler Cheddar soup. However these were all surpassed by the Newbottle Farm Beef. Well some people have mentioned the taster was pricey I felt I would rather pay extra and come away feeling like I have experienced something very different and better from the norm. "The bitter taste of poor quality remains long after the sweet taste of low price is forgotten !" Cant wait to try the Winter taster menu.
