Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Came here for lunch with family, including two young children. You have to order at least two courses for a set price. The meals definitely vary in quality but are all very salty. Including the children’s meal which was covered in visible salt! Desserts were...missing items from the menu such as no popcorn with the cheesecake and no fruit coulis with the ice cream. No children’s menu - we were told ‘chicken goujons or fish goujons’ (sorry vegetarians but you’re out of luck!). No children’s dessert menu - had to order adult sized portion for full price. If you have children in your party I would suggest going somewhere else. Service was slow and inattentive. No-one came to check on us during the meals and we had a long wait between courses, after almost three hours we felt almost trapped there! Wasn’t busy enough to justify the service but felt like they were low on staff.More

Having visited this place for many years in its previous guise as The Horns we were eager to try it now it has been transformed to The Cowshed. All we can say is wow! An amazing job has been done to this family run restaurant....The decor is elegant and warm with open fires to keep everyone warm and adding to the ambience. A nice welcome and then shown to our table in the main dining room. Table were well spread out meaning there is an element of privacy. The staff were very attentive and always checking on us to make sure everything was ok. Not a huge menu but everything looked tasty and it was hard to choose just one starter and main course each! When the food did come it was all perfectly cooked and well presented. Everything is freshly prepared and you can tell nothing is pre-packaged. All in all an excellent evening and a reasonable cost. Well done to the owners and their team. The Cowshed will be on our repeat visit list for sure.More

Sunday lunch turned out to be such a disappointment in comparison to my previous mid week visits which I enjoyed soooo much But Sunday lunch was a sad state of affairs the meat was tough and didn’t really taste of anything the “pan” gravy was...watery and bland and wasn’t beefy at all my two small pieces of carrot had the most flavour out of the whole dish Roast potatoes were so huge they were like jacket potatoes Cheesy broccoli was nice and side of peas plentiful we just didn’t enjoy the overall meal it was tasteless and bland I have to say and not a cheap Sunday lunch either Service was however second to none excellent and attentive drunk were good Such a very different experience than what I had before with be coming for Sunday lunch again unfortunately 3 stars given mainly for the service 1 star for food overallMore

Really tasty food, very ambient atmosphere. Staff helpful and pleasant. One party member is a vefan, catered for no problem and, as we have experienced before, no eye rolling.

Lovely food, crap service. We have been going to the cowshed for years even when they were in pattingham. I must say for such a big venue with not many tables booked and a lot of staff working, the service is poor. We were a...table of 10 but there weren’t many full tables in there. We waited a long time for drinks, vegetables came out very late when we had almost finished our meals, children’s food was forgotten and we were sat with plates in front of us a lot. For the amount of staff they have, the attention to detail is missing. The meals here aren’t cheap either. I think the staff just need a shake up on clearing plates and taking drinks orders. They probably missed out on 2 more rounds of drinks we could have ordered if they had noticed none of us had a drink. Can’t fault the food thoughMore

First visit, never again! Black pudding starter was ok but poor quality black pudding rather limp. Service slow between starter and main, two of us had the braised beef, the gravy of which was so salty it was inedible, think it was out of a...packet. Managed to eat some of the beef , but both gave up as it was like eating pure salt. Complained and was first told we wouldn’t have to pay for both beef dishes and then later we were told they would only take one off the final bill. Very disappointed.More
