Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Would love to write a positive review but we had booked to find the cafe closed “due to unforeseen circumstances “ a call or text to let us know would have been good. That said we hope that everything is OK

Very disappointing, decided to have the Fish Chowder it was disgusting, nothing like I have had in other restaurants. Would also mention that there is only one toilet for customers to use resulting in queues outside the door into the dining area, this is not...good. Would not recommend or return.More

Lovely friendly cafe with an excellent menu that caters for all diets. Good choice of beer, wine, coffee, tea etc, and if you can manage a pudding (I couldn't) they look excellent. Just off the town centre on a side street and overlooking the river,...search it out, you wont be disappointed.More

Having been there several times last year and been really pleased, it was not up to the previous standards. Although service was lovely, the portion sizes had decreased, as hungry cyclists, it was disappointing. The portion of chips was tiny as was the amount of...humous in the baguette and no taste of chilli sauce. The salad it came with was also a tiny portion.More

We have been here lots of times before so when we had a couple of hours to spare in Tavistock we popped in for a late lunch. The staff are still as lovely as ever but what a shame about the food. I am not...sure what had happened to the couscous but it was in hard lumps. I told the girl who came to check that it it was weird but I was just going to eat around it. Whist eating the chicken I nearly broke a tooth on something hard that turned out to be a bone with a razor sharp point to it. The young man who came to clear our plates apologised immediately and did so again when he came back with our bill which has been reduced by a couple of pounds. He handled the situation perfectly but I am afraid I won’t be coming here again.More

Having been told how great this place is we were very disappointed. Found the food to be less than average, baguette stale and the grated cheese went everywhere but is obviously cheaper to use than sliced cheese. Other meals we had were adequate. Thought soft...drinks were well overpriced . The staff however were very attentive but would we go here again. Sorry it's a no.More

We’ve eaten here before and it has previously been ok but this time it was a total disappointment! We came in immediately behind a man who was seated by staff whilst we were ignored completely, so we found our own table. After waiting a while...it was clear that no-one was bringing us a menu and when I went to the counter I was told “we didn’t see you come in”; it can’t have been due to the invisibility of old age as the guy we followed in was also of senior years but he wasn’t ignored! The more mature member of staff who took the order was far from friendly, in fact she was positively brusque and snappy. Anyway we persevered and ordered. The fish and chips my companion had were soggy and disappointing as too was my eggs benedict with the poached eggs not perfectly formed as they should be but just an ordinary poached egg spread out on top, the muffin had obviously been frozen and then nuked in a microwave, it was tough and inedible. No-one came anywhere near us to see if the meal was ok. When I complained the only reduction was for the muffin despite the fact it ruined the meal; not quite sure how they worked that one out! But don’t worry we won’t be returning as there are plenty of other cafes in Tavistock with nice friendly staff, better service and good food!More

Visited here with my partner, on the hunt for a cream tea. Which did not disappoint! I was feeling hungry after walking around town so ordered a bowl of chips as well as a cream tea… which I did not need as the cream tea...was HUGE!!! So tasty too!! So glad we chose to visit here. Staff were very friendly too and it was lovely to sit by the river.More

Sadly could have been better , I had the salmon and cream cheese sandwich on white , the bread was incredible dry and not very nice at all I can't be sure but it felt like if had been frozen and defrosted but that's just...a guess ? I did mention at the time but in hide sight should have sent it back , but being a diabetic I needed to eat and not the hassle , they may say I should have said something, but if you think that bread must have been touched at least three times in the making process and still got to me 🤷‍♂️ it cost nearly 9 pounds so really should have been better my partner had a salad and enjoyed it 👍More

We were told of East Gate by the Daughter and so we paid an afternoon visit. Lovely old building by the River and good size menu of Food, Drinks and Home made Cakes. We sat to enjoy a Pot of Tea, huge slice of Coffee...& Walnut Cake plus a Glass of Zinfandel Rose Wine and an equally large slice of Chocolate Cake. Service was Friendly, Polite, Informative and Efficient. Plenty of seating with an outside area which would be lovely in the Summer Months. Free WiFi compliments East Gate and Prices are comparable with others in the area. Well worth a visit in my view.More

We had such a friendly welcome, and were shown to a comfortable table and the lovely waitress really went the extra mile with her smile, and her thoughtfulness. We ordered coffee, I asked for a weak black one, and she brought an extra jug of...hot water, just in case I needed it. We chose to share a toasted tea cake, and again she thoughtfully brought an extra plate, knife and table napkin. Little things, but they made such a difference. We will certainly return next time we are in Tavistock, and I most certainly can happily recommend it to other travellers. Thank ouMore
