Review from a local 5 minutes walk away. Friendly welcome and service. Lovely lager! Mains took nearly 40 mins but we were kept informed. Quality good but expensive for what was served. £19 for sea bass and £15-50 for burger and chips. Blueberry frangipane came with pouring cream at £8 but I don’t like cream so asked for ice cream instead but was told it would be a £2 surcharge! I queried that and to be fair the ice cream was swopped for the same price. However the frangipane was dry and tasteless. Like the new interior. Overall doesn’t match up to other pubs such as Peter Tavy in terms of quality and price. Will give Sunday lunch a go as we are so close and then decide if we will be regulars.

We LOVED this place! I rang to book a table for the same day which wasn't an issue - 2 adults and our baby. We were on holiday locally and wanted to try it out. It was hands down one of the best meals we have had out in a very long time (and we go out for dinner a lot!) We shared their scotch egg of the day (beef brisket) which was delicious, really well cooked, tender and a lovely runny yolk egg. For our mains, we had the buttermilk chicken burger and the wild seabass with mussels. Both were so tasty and so fresh, clearly a lot of love had gone into it. Our baby wolfed down everything we put in front of him too!! We loved how attentive they were since we walked in, a perfect balance of making sure everything was great, without being overbearing. It was clear everyone else in there was enjoying their meals and I can only wish that we were staying a few more days so we could have returned again. However, we visit the area annually so will definitely return again next year! I have recommended it to lots of people. Thank you so much for a wonderful evening

Tavistock is blessed with plentiful eateries but The Market Inn is in the Premier League. We had Black-pudding Scott Egg & Pork Belly +; both were cooked perfectly and well portioned. Wine list, whilst not large, has a number of great wines at sensible prices. Service was excellent, premises clean and the music play list was varied. What differentiates The Market Inn from the other excellent pub, The Cornish Arms, in Tavistock, is prices. I suspect that is why there were so many locals in the pub, if you can eat this well at 2/3rds of the price, why go any well else.

Came on good recommendation, but it was all a bit odd. We asked to move table due to a terrible rotting smell (also commented on by other customers independently as ‘rotting flesh’ and ‘dirty nappies’) The food was overpriced and undercooked. Kids chicken was inedibly rubbery with visible red blood, £15 burger was rare. Service was passive aggressive and it felt we were being taken for fools. The smell was blamed on ‘hanging pheasants’ and we were told ‘you should have told us you wanted your burger to be well done when ordering’. The same half eaten burger was returned after additional cooking, rather than a fresh one. Puddings were pathetically small and pretentious for £8. We badly wanted this to be a success, knowing how small vulnerable local pubs like this desperately need our support, but we ended up being sorely disappointed and to be honest insulted for the price. Embarrassed to have taken friends there.

Went to the Market Inn as I have read good reviews online, we normally go to a different venue in town which has amazing reputation but we were too late, they were full. In hindsight I wish we stayed at home! We found the whole experience dreadful and unpleasant, please do not think I am trying to just give a bad review, this is real experience, my boyfriend, friends and I couldn’t believe the Manager (which we now understand is the owner) was so rude, when someone says “they shouldn’t be in hospitality” believe me, she shouldn’t. Right where to start. The welcome was blunt and made us feel like we were in her way. When I asked what beers they currently had on tap for my boyfriend, I was told a lot! (very helpful as we had never been there before) so quickly I saw a brand he liked and ordered it, I went back to my seat and told my boyfriend and friends what just happened, she clearly overheard and kept staring at us which made one of my friends really uncomfortable, we thought we would order food and try to forget about the first experience. The food was basic, tasteless and for the money presently badly. I had the market thali, my boyfriend and one of my friends had burgers and my other friend had the fish. The Thali had unusual favours, the burgers felt like it came from a cheap kabab shop, the fish was smelly and the chips tasted of old oil. Surprisingly we didn’t stay for desserts and extra drinks and left as soon as possible. We complained at the time, which she clearly was not happy, but reluctantly discounted one of the burgers as my friend could not eat hers, but felt this was to keep us from leaving a bad review. When we got home, I looked at the reviews again to see if we had missed anything as we couldn’t believe our experience we just had. All I will say is please look at where the other reviewers are reviewing, there seems to be a lot who have just been to both of the owners pubs and no where else. The sad bit about all of this was that they were not busy, so we would have thought they would have wanted our custom, we wont be returning, yet another pub/restaurant in Tavistock with potential but the wrong owners/managers.

It’s very difficult to respond to this because for whatever reason known to you, you have not visited The Market. I have double checked our till system for the last six months and have never refunded a burger on a mixed table of as you describe Thalis, fish and chips etc. I am very happy to share that report of all sales. It’s very sad that someone pertaining to live in Tavistock would write one review saying you live in London. I would guess the only clue to this review are your comments relating to another local restaurant. It is false account of a false experience and we are truly sad for you.

The Inn has been recentlyre furbished & has a friendly ambience.Staff were very friendly&helpful ,nothing toomuchtrouble.I choose the Roast lamb with roast potatoes& a choice of vegetables.Tracey(owner/bar was very informative about choices.Tab/bar waitress was very plesant & the meal was served piping hot.the lamb was delicous & the selectionon of fresh vegetables & cauliflower cheese along with a crispy cruchchy yorkshire pudding completed the meal.Delicious meal would recommend.

Fantastic food, setting and service. We had dinner here for the first time since it had been taken over by new owners. The place felt homely, warm and had lovely decor. The staff went above and beyond to make sure we felt welcome and had everything we needed. We saw a notice board with lots of dates for quizzes and bands. The price was very fair and we felt we got a lot of food for our money. It was lovely to hear the menus change regularly which meant more choice! The monkfish curry was particularly good, we highly recommend! We will definitely be returning with family and friends.

Last night was the second time of visiting in just over a week - as we liked it so much the first time we wanted to come back! We are relatively new to Tavistock so have no previous experience of what this was like before the new owners took over but we love it! Warm, friendly welcome, super attentive staff and the food really is incredible. The menu is really varied, with just as many options seemingly on the specials menu. Reasonable prices, no silly long waits between courses - these are definitely people who understand what good service and hospitality is. Most certainly worth a visit :)

An unassuming gastro pub that feels like it has a great future. Great staff and brilliant service. Any chef who puts a turkey and haggis pie on a specials list, is either certifiable or a genius; I believe there is genuinely a fine line between the two. But in this case, it’s pure genius. It was a very tasty, well seasoned and well presented. My wife had a trio of starters, scallops, trout marinated in vodka and Greek salad; all were equally delicious and well executed. We also ordered a side of truffle chips which were extraterrestrial; annoyingly we were so full we couldn’t finish them off - it still hurts when I think about that. We’d go back again in a heartbeat and can highly recommend it.

After a last minute decision to go out for Sunday lunch with my family who were visiting, we came upon The Market Inn. Booking was easy, and after we arrived earlier than planned, they were so good in finding us a table there and then. We all opted for a traditional roast. The reviews are very much earned! The meal was delicious, the service was attentive and the cost was competitive. The Inn itself is extremely welcoming. Needless to say, we will return.

If you’re looking for a small family run pub that serves good beer and great food then this is the place for you. This was our third visit and as ever the food was a cut above the average pub offering. We chose cheeky cottage pie - cottage pie that I think was make from ox cheek - absolutely delicious, and a chicken thali which would have graced a good Indian restaurant. The desserts are great as well, very inventive. Overall you get the impression that the chef is someone who really thinks about the menu and gives his customers a great experience. The choice of beer and wine certainly compliments the food and on top of all that the service is first rate. If you’re reading this and thinking it can’t be that good I can only say give it a try and find out - you won’t be disappointed.

Sorry to have to give a poor review but the food ordered was both cold and insufficient in quality and quantity. Although the food was returned to the kitchen twice for reheating it was still cold. The bill was amended to reflect these issues. However, a reduction in cost does not make up for these basic short commings.

We spent a lovely Saturday morning wreath making at the Market Inn. We had a lovely time making the wreaths and afterwards enjoyed a very nice lunch . Coffee cake and Prosecco were also included which made such excellent value for money . It was the first time I have done this and it was really lovely thing to do at the start of the festive season. Thank you for a lovely time xx

5 family members met up for lunch today at the Market Inn, The meal was excellent 2 of us had Chicken Thali and two the Chicken Breast dishes whilst the fifth member had two starters. All were superbly cooked and presented and were very good size and filling. Some had dessert and again all were delicious. The staff were pleasant helpful and attentive to our needs.. It was a fabulous family lunch and good value for money. I thoroughly recommend the place.

My family stopped by on the chance that they'd have an early Saturday evening table available and we all really enjoyed our visit. The food was great and each of our dishes were unique and tasty traditional pub plates. The staff were very accommodating to us and our young children, and very friendly. We will be back!
