We are a family run, friendly, village pub & restaurant with a contemporary feel whilst maintaining our country charm. Starting our journey in 2020 with the aim of providing a friendly atmosphere whether you are having a family celebration, business lunch or a casual stop off whilst walking your dog. We are passionate about food and drink and promote the local produce that Herefordshire and the Wye Valley has to offer where possible on our food menus and drinks selection. We are dog friendly in our bar area, garden and terrace which is a glorious sun trap for al-fresco dining and long summer evenings. We also offer private dining and event hire in our upstairs dining room. Our chefs are regularly creating new dishes to include on our specials, Sunday roasts and seasonal menus. With our unique position in the heart of the Wye Valley, close to Ross-on-Wye, The Forest of Dean, Symonds Yat and Goodrich Castle, The Mill Race has so much to offer locals and visitors alike!

Family Dinner whilst on holiday

We ate here one night whilst on holiday. The food was delicious and the staff were helpful and friendly. We wife had the duck of which she was given a lot, I had a lovely tasty pasta dish with plenty of salmon & prawns, my son their burger which he really enjoyed. However the star dish was the steak my daughter had. It was cooked to how she likes it and was really well rested so it just melted in your mouth. The cask beer was well kept and the pub is dog friendly. The only thing I would have liked was it to be a little warmer however considering the cost of energy was completely understandable. There was a good blend of diners and people just in for a drink who appeared to be locals which I always think is a good sign.

This was a night out for me and my boyfriend and thought we would try somewhere completely new. As soon as we walked in we were welcomed sat to a table in their room well decorated and modern restaurant. All of the staff were helpful friendly and well presented checking on us for drinks and checking our food was good thought out the night. The food was amazing Camembert to start was well presented with fresh focaccia bread and the chicken and Parma ham main tasted amazing. The gin menu was very big with the waitress recommending different flavours. Definitely worth the 5 stars and will be back again in the future

Good food but service was slow

Should start by saying that we booked late and the restaurant informed us that they were busy, so we could only have a table at 7.30pm. The waitress took our order quickly. We ordered the bread and olives and our main course. The starter took over 30 mins and the main course an hour. The burger I had was tasty with the beef being particularly good.

A race to the loo!

Very disappointed. Starting on 2 positives. Service and decor were great. Food was pretty low quality for the price or for even half the price. As a foursome 2 of the starters (Parfait) went back mostly untouched. The mussels came in a big bowl of sauce that can only be described as warm milk. The mains especially the chicken and pasta was way over cooked. Desserts should have been easier but they too came to the table at room temperature. The following morning 2 out of the 4 diners spent a sleepless night in the loo! First and last time for me. I was looking forward to it as I had heard good things.

Friendly and amazing food

Dropped by This place with intention of having just a coffee. The staff were so friendly and informative that we decided to look at the menu, ended up with a 3 course meal and went away very happy the food was so tasty and the atmosphere was amazing. We have 2 prams and 2 babies, there was plenty of room for both. Nice and warm by the fire on a cold autumunal day.

Great local food especially the Hereford steaks yum!!

Lovely setting with very helpful patient friendly staff. Toilets were clean. All food was hot fresh & local. Fully recommend the steaks locally sourced Hereford steaks that were tender & flavoursome. We had a large table next to us that were very noisy but the staff did all they could to ensure we still had a lovely evening by offering us an alternative table so we could hear each other speak! Never made us feel uncomfortable nor were they awkward about. All credit to you guys for managing a difficult situation trying to please all. Best of luck going forwards keep up the good work! Thanks for a lovely meal

Fantastic!!!

Had a fantastic lunchtime meal at The Mill Race today. A truly warm welcome, with friendly professional staff from the moment we stepped through the door. We were served by Ellie and a young gentleman who's name I didn't get (apologies). Both were extremely polite and chatty, checking everything was to our liking without being in any way intrusive. Plenty of choice on the menu, we both opted for the burgers (beef/halloumi) which were delicious, beautifully presented and perfectly cooked. Make sure you have the onion rings as were unbelievably light and crispy. We finished off with the ice-creams and sorbets which in the current heat were absolutely perfect. The place itself is great value for the quality of food, spotlessly clean, with a modern yet cosy feel and a lovely beer garden. Our only regret is that we found this gem at the end of our holiday and not the start. We will definitely return when next in the area. Thanks again to all.

Fantastic food and friendly service

If you are looking for somewhere tasty to eat then stop looking now and get booking here. The burger I had here was incredible I would go as far to say it was one of the best I have ever had. We pre-booked our table which was super easy and was greeted by a lovely lady who made a fuss of our dog, he was very appreciative of the biscuits she gave him. If we are ever in the area again we will certainly be coming back!

Friendly service, good food

We visited the Mill Race for an evening meal and enjoyed friendly service, a nice selection of local beers, and great food. The chicken ceased salad starter was especially delicious, with fresh anchovy balancing beautifully with crispy bacon and very well cooked chicken that was seasoned perfectly to provide bags of flavour. The ‘Mill mess’ dessert of local berries, meringue and whipped cream was also great.

Warm welcome from two young female bartenders……very cold pub. Our starters of soup and bread and olives were really good and reasonably priced. The main courses however were very poor. Whilst the beef shin had obviously been prepped to a high standard it was spoilt by being served on a mustard mash and smothered with a flavourless gravy, both of which were excessively salted to the point burning the mouth. The squash lasagne although good in flavour had been excessively over microwaved, to the point that the bottom pasta was a hard and leathery texture. The onion rings were beautiful. We were honest when asked if everything was alright with our meal, but met only with the server’s awkward embarrassment and obvious lack of customer service skills to deal with a negative response. Decided not to risk a dessert but the coffee was great.

We are delighted that you enjoyed our shin of beef as its one of our best sellers on the menu and we are receiving so many complements regarding that dish! Sorry to hear that the texture of the lasagne wasn't to your liking, however we are very happy you enjoyed the flavor of it. We can reassure you, that the front of house staff who was serving you that night is with us for a very long time, and we can not be prouder of their work ethic and customer service. The ladies made sure your table is close to a fireplace to keep you warm ( it is a very old stone building which unfortunately doesn't keep the heat great). Also mentioned how lovely interaction they had with you throughout the evening, without mentioning any negative comments from your part and were very humbled with a generous tip left by yourselves. We agree the James Gourmet Coffee is absolutely fantastic, glad you enjoyed it! We really do hope to see you again soon Team Mill Race

Amazing find !

Booked this for an evening meal with friends . We arrived early but the staff were friendly and showed us to a lovely table by the fire . We fancied a lazy evening so just ordered starters which were lovely . Olives and the sharing Camembert. But honestly also because so many things had tempted us on the menu - none of us could decide ! Then we asked if we could swap some items on the menu around and they were so accommodating. We had steak , lamb & hake and every meal was perfect . Although we were full the deserts were tempting so crumble , sticky toffee pudding and cheese board was the perfect way to end the meal . Lovely to have some fresh homemade food and the lovely bread . Honestly it’s a real find and we can’t wait to return . Pity we live 90 minutes away as this will be a regular trip . If you want an independent pub / restaurant and some lovely home cooked food this is the place to go . Thank you for a lovely evening ( apologies for the terrible photos but we were all diving in before I had chance to take any !)

fantastic festive menu

WOW! What a lush festive meal, the chicken Ballantine was amazing but the turkey breast wrapped in Parma ham was so moist and the roast potatoes were perfect crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. This menu will take some beating over the festive period. Stunning!!

Best Veggie Sunday Roast !!!!!!

Eventually managed to get to The Mill Race for a Sunday dinner, it’s been on our list for ages. The place is lovely, staff are great and was great to see so many family groups laughing and enjoying the moment. All the food is sourced locally, the furthest supplier was for the fish at 50 miles but that’s fine, there a good supplier! We both had the vegetarian roast and it was faultless, brilliant roast spuds, crisp and not oily, best carrots I’ve had in an age and cauliflower cheese that was almost as good as my wife’s ! Beer garden looks great and I know I’m going to make use of it come summer I’m definitely bringing family and friends here for food.

Rude landlord

Firstly, we asked for 2 glasses of a wine that was listed on a chalkboard above the bar. The waiter had no idea what we were asking for and despite us repeatedly pointing it out to him on the blackboard he just said “no I can’t see it” . His colleague stepped in and our wine was served .We were still happy to be there at this point and not bothered by this incident. We placed an order while we waited for the last 2 members of our party to arrive. They arrived fairly promptly . We had baked Camembert and an antipasti board to share. The Camembert was incredibly salty!! The mains took absolutely ages to come out. We waited at least 40 minutes between courses . The menu stated that we would have to wait 20 minutes for a pie that one of us chose but we waited far longer than that. When our food finally arrived my pasta dish looked as though it had been sitting on the pass for most of the 40 minutes we had been waiting. It was bland and unpleasant and did not taste fresh at all. My daughter’s chicken burger was pink inside - not something you want with chicken. However the worst thing that happened was that our dog started barking at two other dogs seated close to us. I had started to make a move to take her out when the landlord burst out shouting at us to stop the dog barking . I was already doing that but he was so angry we felt humiliated . He was red faced and beside himself - not a good look for a landlord, and we were spending a lot of money. We won’t return. Do not be fooled by the protestations of this hostelry that it is dog friendly- it most definitely is not!! All he needed to do was to quietly come over to speak to us, in which case he would have seen that I was already getting up to take her out. Why would you treat your customers like that? Also he went to the loo and was observed by one of our party not to wash his hands afterwards!! Gross … he wasn’t serving customers at this point, he was sitting at the bar drinking, but even so…..

The Mill Race

Hello Jill H Thank you so much for taking the time to write your review. Just to clarify the person who made a comment regarding your dog, was simply a customer who had enough of your dogs barking non stop for over an hour and a half. The landlord of The Mill Race is a head chef who was in the kitchen all evening and the landlady is away. I can reassure you that The Mill Race is very much a well behaved dog friendly pub, which our returning customers and their four legged friends can confirm. We would also like to mention that several customers trying to enjoy their dinner in the restaurant and couldn't becouse of your dog, came over to the gentelman who commented on your dogs behaviour to thank him for stepping up. Clearly on this occasion recollection vary. Team Mill Race

EXCELLENT

After walking here and arriving early we were welcomed with a very friendly smile and not a problem at all. The rest of our party joining us later. Our table was ready so we were seated. After the others join us we were treated to friendly excellent service always accommodation to our needs. The FOOD mmmm I wish I could go every day. All courses were absolutely lovely, and no one at our table could find a complaint. We were served with promptness and always a smile. We used to use this eatery a lot but after it lost its good food and service we stopped going there. But after reading about Ashley and Gosia taking the reins we want to try it again and we were NOT disappointed. I’d like to thank them both and their team for and excellent lunch. We will be back, and if your looking to go out for food to somewhere who does things excellently then go to the Mill Race.
