Another excellent culinary experience here in Kirkwall. What a treat it is to eat dinner out each night during a break in this small island town. This is a fairly new eatery, but the quality and attention to detail suggests that the team here bring a lot of past experience in this field. The interior style is very much modern, set within a character space. Most tables boast an Orcadian chair amongst the seating options; should that be something you are keen to experience, maybe mention this when you make your booking. The food was faultless. This time we both chose to have a starter: a cheese tartlet, which was delicious and came with crisp fresh green leaves, and the scallops. Coming from New Zealand where the scallops are the world’s best, we are usually disappointed when we order scallops elsewhere. But another discovery we have made about the culinary highlights available on Orkney - the scallops are amazing. On to the mains - the steak was very nice; the chicken with haggis bonbons and a whisky gravy a different take which I enjoyed. Again, we appreciated the sides of seasonal vegetables which came with the meals. At dessert time, I chose the Orkney icecream trio. I got to select the three I would most like to try from a selection of 6 or 7 options, all of them interesting rather than your more standard, predictable dull flavours. And they were all delicious. The coffee came out in quality handmade Polish cups and we chose to try a local whisky with it. We very much enjoyed our evening here, and it only added to our enthusiasm for Kirkwall as an excellent holiday destination for people who love good food.

Service was good and the food delicious. However the portion size was very variable (large fish & chips, small vegetarian stew, medium sized scallop dish). The choice for vegetarians on the menu was very limited. The prices were quite high & although the menu was interesting, we didn't feel it was value for money.

We stayed 2 nights and had dinner each evening. The food was excellent, service great, with very friendly and helpful staff, and rooms very well appointed. Strong focus on locally sourced food. The breakfasts were especially good - a different smoothie each day, freshly squeezed juice. The trio of fish - a standard on the menu but we understand the fish vary - was great and the soup of the day, when we were there butternut squash and harissa, was excellent. The Storehouse is very convenient for exploring Kirkwall, a few hundred metres from the port and even less to the main shopping area. Yet despite this we were able to park our hire car only about 20m away.

We should have left the Storehouse with a smile and the feeling that we had a great meal. After all, the food was of a high standard, the surroundings were fun and informal and the service was attentive and efficient. Unfortunately, we left with scowls on our face, grumbling all the way to the car park. The reason? For some bizarre reason, only one person is tasked with doing the drinks and that person does the meeting and greeting and waits tables. As a result, a bottleneck (no pun intended) is created that meant in our case that though the waitress was on our case within minutes of sitting down to order our drinks, they didn't arrive till mid-way through our starter. When I moaned, they generously offered to waive the mocktails but then, at the end of the meal, they did it again. We only wanted a port and a patis, drinks that would take 20 seconds to dispense, but we were still waiting 15 minutes after placing the order so we decided to call it a day and asked for the bill. That arrived promptly but the message had not got through about waiving the mocktails! I know there is a problem in hospitality right now with getting staff but the kitchen seemed well resourced and there was no apparent shortage of waiting staff but it seems that management has made a staffing decision which has undermined all this good work. Great pity because I doubt I will ever return to the lovely Orkneys.

Had a delicious trio of fish with matching wine, and the staff were happy to swap one type of potato side dish for another. Bit pricy but lovely decor, ambience, service and taste- and felt quite quirky. The menu included info about the history of the building, and everything felt covid secure throughout. However there were no vegetarian main courses on offer, so wouldn't recommend as a veggie-friendly destination (as it is listed).

Hi Anna We are one of the very few places in Orkney who have a Vegan/Veggie Menu as well as our main evening menu and also offer gluten free options. If only you had mentioned you were a Vegetarian when you sat down or when you had booked -and made us aware ! Next time you go out to eat l suggest you tell your server you are indeed vegetarian !

What can I say? I would never return to the Storehouse even if I lived locally. The food really is very good (special mention for the scallops), and I would have given it five stars if the service hadn’t been so glacially slow. The main course took over an hour to arrive, and there we were, thinking that by agreeing to the 5:30 booking (the only slot remaining), we would be in and out in no time at all. Instead we were there for over two hours. Oh, and they had to be reminded about the wine order. I’m afraid that for the first time in memory we did not leave a tip.

We visited the Storehouse on 27th August. We have been there before and I did read the current reviews before we went and noted the mixed nature of the reviews. It is a lovely place and the kitchen is in full view so you get an idea of what is happening which is good. The staff have optimum attentiveness, always aware but never obtrusive and all seem to be very knowledgeable and efficient. To the food, as a vegetarian I couldn't see anything on the menu but on asking I was brought an tempting and extensive vegetarian menu, perhaps it was an omission that it was not on the table at arrival, a small point. The cheese tart starter was good and I suspect warmed by microwave although it didn't detract much; I could hear the electronic ping which I think was a microwave which surprised me. My wife had the haddock and hand cut chips with peas. The only slight disappointment was that the chips were probably frozen. I had the veggie stew which was very nice and my wife finished with a trio of ice cream again very nice. I don't mean to be picky because it wasn't expensive at £30 a head including drink so it passes with 7 or 8 out of 10. It is unique in Kirkwall and it would be a poorer place without the Storehouse. It's decent value and I would always go back.

Fabulous and very stylish building. Breakfasts were outstanding: freshly made smoothie of the day; delicious fruit salads; homemade pancakes; unlimited excellent teas and coffees; several cooked options. Dinner at night was delicious too. The staff and owners were very friendly and helpful. Our room was beautiful with an incredibly comfy bed, hand made toiletries, fabulous shower and smart tv. Thank you for looking after us so well.

This was easily the best meal we had in Kirkwall. Really good cooking obviously done or designed by a proper chef who knows their onions. Food tasted fresh and lovely, the service and ambience were nice and pleasant. Scallop starter is £10 - so not cheap - but worth it because you are not just receiving competent cooking - you're getting talent.

The restaurant itself was beautiful and a great use of an interesting space. Food was amazing and everything locally sourced, which was highlighted with the page at the back of the menu listing where their ingredients came from. The wine list was very reasonable and lots of choice when it came to non-alcoholic alternatives too. We will be back!

My partner and I ordered cocktails, one of which was made incorrectly and tasted awful. His meal was excellent but I had the fish and chips which was totally bland - I managed about half then signalled a server to complain (they hadn't come to check earlier on how we found the meal). A manager came over and said that she would take the cocktail off the bill as I 'didn't like it' but didn't take the fish off as I'd 'eaten a lot of it'. She was quite rude. So disappointed as the restaurant had come recommended.

Hi There l spoke to you on the evening you were in , the only difference with the Orkney cocktail you had was that we used Cranberry juice instead of blueberry juice as at the moment in Orkney we are unable to source blueberry, it is one of our most popular cocktails and a favorite of our customers , l could see that you had not drunk it, so l refunded it from your bill. l did not refund your Haddock and Chips as the kitchen had told me you had eaten three quarters of what was a very generous main portion, if indeed like your cocktail, you had not eaten it then we certainly would have refunded this as well . l was not rude but was extremely fair and polite to you and immediately deducted the cost of your cocktail from your bill. We are very happy that your partner found his meal to be indeed excellent.

Booking here was quite a challenge thanks to the phone signal dropping out 6 times but they were good enough to call us back to confirm- so that was a positive sign of things to come! We arrived to a good welcome and the restaurant was very busy. Very impressed with the decor and the open kitchen. I started with the haddock scotch egg and my wife with scallops- they were both superb. Along with a great local beer I then had belly pork with black pudding and my Wife the trip of local fish. I was totally astounded at the belly pork which is layered in a perfect oblong with the black pudding and then coated in breadcrumbs. It was a work of art! The trio of fish was delight. We simply could not fault either the service or the meal. We eat quite often in high-end restaurants, some with Michelin stars, and the quality of the food here is their equal. Well done Judith and all your staff especially the lad on the bar!

We stayed at the Storehouse for 3 nights of our 16 day Scotland tour. This was one of the nicest hotels we stayed in - lovely updated and spacious rooms and wonderful amenities. We loved the fresh baked shortbread cookies from a local bakery and the luxury bath products. Bed was extremely comfortable and the walk in shower with a rainfall shower head was refreshing after our long days touring the islands. Breakfast made to order in the restaurant was delicious. Try the smoothies and pancakes for sure. We ate dinner in the restaurant and the scallops and steak were some of the group favorites. Scallops were perfectly cooked and portion was very generous - more so than another restaurant we ate at across town. Staff was very friendly and accommodated our large group of 8. We were even able to order sandwiches to take along with us on our day trip to Rousay. All food was delicious! And location in Kirkwall was perfect - walkable to all shops, restaurants, water front and sites such as St. Magnus Cathedral and bishop and earls’ palace. I can’t imagine a nicer accommodation in Kirkwall, so happy we had the pleasure of staying and dining here. Highly recommend!

Excellent lunch today at The Storehouse. The menu was packed with lots of delicious dishes. So much so I had a difficult job deciding what to choose. I opted for the Honey & garlic chicken, fried rice and cucumber salad and I was not disappointed. It was so tasty and beautifully presented. I don't usually have a pudding at lunchtime but I couldn't resist the lemon tart with raspberries, it was so fresh and zingy. Looking forward to returning soon to The Storehouse and sampling more of the dishes on the menu.

We stayed for 2 days this winter and it was fantastic. Be aware the restaurant is only open Wednesday to Saturday in winter so it was a bit quiet for my Monday Tuesday visit. But still a huge great breakfast, we also had lunch on Wednesday as we left. I have to say the chef is fantastic, beautiful food to taste and look at, great care and very much enjoyed. Judith has designed the hotel and it is special, quality design touches everywhere merged with an historic building. We will come back for this.
