A taste of the sea with magical service

Booked via Facebook into the new restaurant attached to our favourite fish mongers. A reservation on a Saturday is a must as they get so busy. Pleasant setting by the river, and inside is cosy and romantically lit. Menu is varied with plenty of specials too, to cater for all fish lovers. My partner and I had oysters, tempura prawns and seafood bisque to start followed by specials of turbot and swordfish. The oysters and fish were so fresh you could taste the sea. Mains were beautifully cooked - you can really tell the chefs know what they are doing. The waiting staff really made our evening, going above and beyond to make it a warm and personal experience. Left feeling not only satisfied, but special too. To top it all off, the fishmongers is great to buy fish for home cooking. Visiting here is a must!

Worth a visit

Thoroughly enjoyed our meal at The White Swan.Danny and team are to be congratulated. Warmly welcomed at the door, settled at the bar, bliss. Great menu and specials. Starters and main were perfect , fish and steak mains beautifully cooked, side of perfect saute vegetables and a great Daupinoise potato,partnered with a great wine. Nothing too much trouble Will be back very soon .

Genuinely couldn’t believe our eyes!

I have to say, having chanced upon this place mostly because we’d been stuck in traffic for ages, we almost left when we saw the prices. Not because they are enormous, just because we were hoping for a quick lunch and the menu seemed to suggest a long supper. Anyway, everything looked so good that we decided we’d stay, regardless. We were so pleased that we did! I had decided upon the fish platter and assumed, at £20, it was for one. When we ordered, the waiter asked us if which size we were interested in so we checked how many people each would serve. We were informed that the £35 platter is for four and the £20 for two. Bingo! We ordered one £20 plate. I the started wondering if we’d need a side salad and was informed that the platter came with salad and was big. Okay. We started getting pretty excited. We really could not believe what appeared before us. I really don’t think you could buy the amount of seafood we got from a supermarket for less. Best bit of all was that everything was completely delicious, even the accompanying dips! Really, all of the seafood was notable but I must mention the smoked mackerel. It was the best I’ve ever tried. So different to shop bought stuff. Staff were absolutely great and the terrace area is really lovely, despite the nearby road. We live 40 miles away but will make a point of returning. I’ll take a cold box with me so I can visit the shop next time, too.

Take away fish and chips

We had takeaway which despite the fact that it was cooked whilst husband waited was cold by time he got home which is 2 mins away. The problem appears to be that once it is cooked just placed on side and chips in a bowl until each order is wrapped. Fish was nice chips to small for my liking and as it was on only Luke warm we wouldn’t use again we like our food hot! Gutted as we are trying to support local and this is very local

Disappointed after Supporting During Lockdown

Throughout Lockdown the White Swan was a real fish & chips treat with large quality portions and outdoor seating we were made extremely welcome even with our dog. However following our recent village its clear things have changed since the tourist season has started. We were told if we wanted to still outside to eat our food we would be charged full restaurant prices, this was despite the fact there was nobody at all sat outside and so plenty of room. We sat on the riverside and opened our boxes of food and then noticed that the fish were significantly smaller than our previous visits even though the price was the same. It was cooked well but the small portions and lack of courtesy means we will think twice about returning.

I am sorry to hear you were disappointed when you last visited the White Swan. Obviously now that the restaurant is open again there is a difference in price between takeaway and plated meals but portion size does not vary and it is not affected by the holiday season. There shouldnt have been a problem with you eating your takeaway food at a table if there was room so I can only apologise for that. I will ensure the waiting staff are aware of this in the future.

Amazing Food, Excellent service and Great Atmosphere

What a wonderful night out! We went for my birthday with my parents and had a great evening. The food was devine and the customer service was excellent. My Dad and I opted for the hot sharing platter, my Mum had the mussels and my husband not being a fish person went for the fillet steak. Everything we had was cooked to perfection, the fish was delicious and so fresh! My husbands steak didn't have one ounce of fat or gristle and I think he could have easily cut it with a butter knife! We didn't opt for desserts as we were too full but they sounded delicious! Maybe next time.... We will definitely be going back but I would highly advise booking as I can see this becoming very popular!!

Fish and Chip night

Made a booking for their Wednesday fish and chip night and wonded whether we should go because of the virus. Did not have to worry, all hygein preparation was at hand. Table was served with cutlery AFTER we sat down, protective gloves worn, so we were happy. Both had lovely starters followed by gorgeous skate with a nice drink with coffees to follow. As normal Danny was as attentive as usual People please support this restaurant in difficult times. Even if you want a takeaway.

We had our last meal of our stay cation last Thursday and I have to say the Covid rules were well adhered to and the staff and food were absolutely amazing! Only criticism would be that portions were too big! Lol. The taramasolata was obviously home made and delicious and the monk fish curry was so delicious! My partner hates lime/lemon in his drinks and this is the first pub/ restaurant in years that checked whether we wanted ice and a slice in our drinks. This restaurant is a true gem and would definitely return and recommend.

Superb fresh fish dinner

We were nearby and having great difficulty finding a good fish restaurant in the area which wasn’t full. We happened to see this place, read some reviews and booked a table. Between the 4 of us we had a few of the starters and mains and all were truly excellent. The fish was fresh and the chef (who came out for a rather bashful introduction later in the evening) obviously knows what he’s doing. The staff were all very efficient and friendly. There is parking, and because it is on the edge of town, you don’t even need to drive into GY (another positive feature). Highly recommended.

Booked lunch for 2, started with pan fried scallops, very nice, followed by 1kg of lobster, 3 halves. It came with a garlic sauce but I asked for cold and as it was, c/w salad and potatoes. It was OK but nothing special, sorry.

Lovely lunchtime meal on a gorgeous sunny day. You can’t beat fresh fish, a sumptuous salad, warm crusty bread and friendly service. If you haven’t tried it, I am certainly recommending it.

Feeling ripped off

I ordered 16 medium sized squid or approximately a kilo and a half. Got a call to say my order was in. (I live in Glasgow and this order wouldn't be more than £40 max). Picked up order and literally nearly fainted at the price, over double what I'd have paid in Glasgow for the same order. When I opened the bags I realised that I'd been given 16 extra large which wasn't what I'd ordered, probably should've realised in the shop at the fact the bags were heavier than a kilo and a half but I was in a hurry. Choked this up to a very expensive mistake but having spent hours cleaning, washing and rinsing the squid to stuff I found after it was cooked to be full of sand. I've ordered squid plenty of times and never known this to be a problem but it made the (obscenely expensive) meal practically inedible. A shame as every time I visit family I buy ingredients from the white swan but after being given an order much larger and more expensive than what I'd actually ordered and to not actually be able to eat it, I will be finding another fishmongers next time I visit.

Outstanding service and top quality food

My wife and I turned up on spec with no booking. Understandably there were no tables. However the staff and in particular the chef were exceptional. I ordered cod and chips and haddock with chips. My wife then noted, after we had ordered that skate was available. Being a Glaswegian I had never tasted skate ( to my eternal shame) and the chef provided me with a sample. I have to say I have eaten fish in many exotic locations and this portion was the closest I have tasted to reef fish in the Maldives. It was truly exquisite. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough and I will most definitely return on my next visit. A definite cap doff to the chef and staff who were so helpful and pleasant

Awful food and Staff

Our experience was awful, the food was overpriced for the quality of food that we received. Staff were unwelcoming, and unhelpful. We ordered the half lobster, 2 battered cod and chips, and the Garlic Prawns (starter, but we wanted as a main, and stated so at time of placing our order) The Lobster was over cooked, and the fish had lots, and I mean lots of bones. I understand that it is fresh fish, and so may have bones in it, however there was so many that we had to eat the fish very tentatively. The menu stated that it came with Home made Tartar Sauce, it didn't arrive with any, nor were we offered any. And the Prawns arrived around 10 minutes after the other food was served, even though we had stated that we wanted it with the mains, We had started our meal, and it took a good while begore we were asked if everything was ok. we mentioned that the Lobster was over cooked, and our server said "I don't eat the food here". and ignored our complaint, and there was no further action taken on this. He made no attempt to remedy the situation, and simply left our table. We are not normally people to complain, but felt that there were too many errors to ignore.

Absolutely gorgeous meal at the white swan for my husbands birthday. All the food was delicious (I could have licked the plate of the starter!) and they did a special lobster for my husband. Whilst there wasn’t a kids meal advertised they were really accommodating for our 11 and 7 year old and the service was amazing. If we lived locally I’d be coming back - highly recommend
