We travelled to Bowness-on-Windermere via Caledonian Travel as part of a coach trip, the coach parked up next to the Boatman's Cafe, the guy who manages the car park came onto the coach and said that if we required a cuppa or the toilet after...our journey there, then we can get a 10% discount in the cafe. We felt that we needed a cuppa so decided to take them up on it. £1.95 for a 4oz cup of the bitterest tea I have ever tasted. Despite the 10% discount it was still a rip off, when you consider that a pot of tea for 2 at the World of Beatrix Potter was less than £3.50 and you got plenty of tea. The place was clean enough, yet it still looked drab and dirty. We were going to get a slice of cake, but it looked rather unappetising, so we didn't bother. I wouldn't recommend it, especially as there are many other cafe's and restaurants within easy walking distance.More

Up to now, I haven't written a bad review, on TripAdvisor. However, I have to now! My wife, my sister in law, her husband and myself decided we would get four ice creams. We stood at the door of the establishment. We did not enter...as there was someone at the counter. We were respecting any Covid conventions. We stood there for ten minutes and got no response from the lady there. She just carried on talking to the man about someone or something on the TV. She made no attempt to ask us what we wanted. So we went away. Looking at their reviews, I can understand their bad reviews. Won't go back, and warn others to do likewise! Some Cafe/restaurant owners need to shape up or go out of business!More

Don’t stop here. The staff were exceptionally rude, and I encountered three different people. Shockingly expensive, poor quality, depressing decor and no atmosphere. You have to practically beg to use the toilets. No wonder it’s empty!

We were visiting the Lakes for a week and booked a boat trip for the morning. On our return to the pier, we were feeling peckish and were offered a 10% discount at the Boatman's. On arriving, the cafe was empty, solemn looking and a...bit miserable to be honest! Being hungry and not knowing the area, we ordered drinks and food. The prices are LUDICROUS for what we ordered. £7 for a bacon baguette.... SEVEN POUNDS for something I could have made myself. This didn't even come with chips only a mediocre salad. The fish and chips was £8 and looked like they had come from the freezer. I wish wish wish we had not stayed; there is nothing worse than leaving a place to eat feeling ripped off. I don't mind paying nearly £30 for 3 meals, if I'm getting good quality food and service. This place offered neither. Wish I had read the reviews before coming, but we don't know the area. All I can say is avoid at all costs.More

My finance had just proposed to me on Windemere Lake and we were thirsty and needed the loo, so popped in to the closest cafe. We were told we couldn't use the toilet until we had purchased something - even though I said we would...order after going this was not sufficient. The man was so rude I felt like walking out at this point but was so desperate for the loo we continued to order some teacakes and got the key to go to the loo. Honestly, I cannot believe how the staff speak to their customers. It's a wonder the place is still open for that reason alone. The inside of the cafe is depressing. The place is quite frankly a dump, run by nasty people and the food is very basic - like a greasy spoon. Reminds me of the cafe the losers go to on the Apprentice. Would not go back if you paid me. Ruined what was meant to be a very special occasion for us - shame on you Boatman's Cafe. Perhaps you ought to read some of the abysmal reviews on here and take some notice of your customers who pay your wages.More

Staff very unfriendly, no choice on breakfast menu other than bacon roll, which was awful and expensive. Staff in gift shop just the same, they don’t allow dogs!!! Where in the lakes doesn’t allow dogs. AVOID

Again writing using COVID 19 adherence this cafe followed the rules and I felt safe. Access is fine for people with mobility issues. Prices as expected for Bowness businesses. Outdoor seating is also available.

We went in here as it was slightly away from the front. Would not let us have a key to the toilet until we bought anything. We wanted tea and ice cream did not serve us for ages. Our son was bursting for the loo....Avoid, they inflcitced our son unnecessarily.More

Food basic and hot food served cold, coffee more expensive than Costa and all a complete rip off. Staff unfriendly and tables not cleared from previous customers, recommend you keep walking.

This cafe is located a short walk from Lake Windermere, right next to the coach park and opposite a car park but the only thing it's got going for it is it's location. They are supposed to serve soup of the day, jacket potatoes and...filling, sandwiches, toasties, cakes, scones and hot meals but when we went the soup was broccoli and smoked cheese...yuk...there were no jacket potatoes left and the sandwiches were in a packet. Only a choice of 3 left too! This was at lunch time!! I reluctantly had a sandwich but the bread was soggy and it was not that appetising. There was a soft drinks machine but this was not being used and the drinks came from a bottle at a cost of £1.95 each!! Probably okay just for a quick coffee whilst waiting for your coach but wouldnt recommend for lunch. It was also expensive for what you got. There are a number of other cafes nearby around the lake which all seemed cheaper than this one (and we had a 10% off voucher too) so try one of those instead!More
