The duke of Edinburgh offers a relaxing environment and the staff are always friendly within their costumer service. The drinks are expensive compared to other pubs in the area but for this extra cost you don’t appear to get any “trouble”. The bar is extensive and they serve real ales. The gin list is impressive and they have a good selection of wine. The bar services branded soft drinks. I haven’t had a meal as yet but I did notice that in relation to dietary requirements it’s abit restricted as they don’t mark up gluten gluten free options. Vegetarians appear to have a good selection of options.

A bit letdown after lockdown. Like many people, we’ve been stuck at home for months with nowhere to go, so I was really looking forward to having my first meal out for 3 months, however the experience was ruined for me by being stuck at a table in the back room. We booked online for 6pm and arrived in plenty of time, and were led to the back room, completely void of any one else, no atmosphere or music, although some music was put on after about half an hour of being there, and about 45 minutes in, some other diners turned up. I cannot fault the food, it was delicious as always, my husband had the steak and I had the butterfly chicken, however after we had been served our drinks l, it took another 20 minutes for anyone to take our food order, not surprising seeing as we were stuck out there like forgotten spare parts, despite there being empty tables in the main bar area, where people hadn’t turned up for the same time as our reservation. I mentioned to the waiter who eventually took our food order if there was any tables available in the main bar, to which he replied no, when clearly people hadn’t turned up 15 minutes after their booking, and also mentioned this when I paid, to which I was told it’s not their fault they didn’t turn up, well no, but surely they could have moved us when it was obvious that there was an empty table and I had already enquired about it. I will probably be back as other than that, the food was lovely and we pop in there on a night out, as it’s always got a good crowd and classier vibe than most of the other bars in Barrow.

After the forced closures it was great to have a meal booked once again. I used the online booking and it was straight forward and easy. Be aware the Duke is very popular so don't leave it too late to book or you will be disappointed. We arrived for our six o'clock booking and it was busy with the great sound of people chatting once more. We were shown to our table and the drinks ordered and a very good new menu left to deliberate. Understandably you have to be patient but the staff coped well and they certainly earned their money that night. The meals were ordered and gammon chop and a sea food dish were the choice. The meals duly arrived and were excellent. The gammon was the best I have ever had over many years of trying. Two beautiful chops perfectly cooked and accompanied by lovely home cooked chips and tasty side dishes. The seafood was again very good and tasty. The chef produced top class food and along with the drinks service we had a very enjoyable return to the joys of eating out once again. The two meals, a few beers and a couple of gins, the cost came to a reasonable £60 for such a quality establishment. Well done to all the very hard working staff.

My first visit here in decades. Met up with friends for lunch. The food was very good, but £13 for Fish & Chips doesn't represent 'value for money'. I had the Mexican Chilli Beef, which was excellent, but don't expect to pay £13 for lunch in Barrow. Also, how can they charge those prices for beer, with Weatherspoons down the road (e.g. Shipyard was significantly more expensive).

We have been before and had a “relaxed” experience, but our latest visit was terrible in terms of service. Food was great though, as always. Arrived on time for our meal, various waiters passed without acknowledging us. Sat down at table without a menu to look at... Once the food order was taken, food came in a quick manner, which was faultless by the way! This was a good job however because no one checks up on you to see how you’re doing. It just irritates me, being on edge in a restaurant, constantly having to get someone’s attention, whether it be for a drink or a dessert menu. I thought it was just common practise to offer a dessert menu once the mains were done with? In the end, my other half and I decided we weren’t in the mood for dessert anymore so asked for the bill. Then had to ask for the 50% to be taken off the food (eat out to help out scheme). At the end of the day, I think if there was more of us and we were having a few drinks, we wouldn’t mind the lack of attention, but as a Couple, I found it to be a stressful experience. Could be down to COVID and teething issues. In conclusion, I don’t think we would rush back when all this is over.

I arrived here saturday with my daughter ,saturday afternoon. It was still busy after lunch . We were seated by Karen and served drinks . We ordered fish and chips ,served with salad mushy peas , sauce . I had battered squid rings ,lightly battered chicken with salad and sauce ..Absolutely delicious , hot ,tasty ,great value. Thank you Adam and Andy . The downside Karen told us she was leaving ,she will be so hard to replace !! SHE can work the huge dining room almost single handed, giving excellent friendly service consistently . Thank you for making all our visits a joy . 💜

Shocking service, incompetent waitress trying to be funny with her own sense of humor & extremely loud.... Food not so great - out of six meals, half were nice the others weren't, not to mention one of the trio of sliders was raw !!! Undercooked & mushy - to which the amusingly funny waitress came back with "the chef said it ain't gonna kill ya" plus a missing side order which we were still waiting to be brought out after all meals were half eaten - told "soz, it'll be 30 seconds" and still never arrived. When the bill was asked for she then advised us "I've knocked off the garlic bread" to which I replied "it should never have been added as it never arrived !!!" But credit for not charging us for the sliders. Food overall was nice but alcohol overpriced & cost more than the six meals did.

Visited this evening with the kids as a treat for the hubbies birthday, greeted by a very grumpy woman who sat us down and didn’t communicate at all so we were sat there wondering do they come to you? Do you press the buzzer? Someone else then came to take the order and the we waited. Very strange place, was expecting a more fancy restaurant rather than a hotel bar with as many tables as they could possibly squeeze in. Good too a little while but to be expected on a Saturday night. Hubby had the steak which he really enjoyed and the kids enjoyed theirs although we had to remind them we asked for beans not peas which then took even longer to arrive. I ordered the chicken Ballantine as I’d never had it before, wish I still hadn’t, so overcooked and dry, potatoes were mostly bruised, covered in eyes/black spots. Very small portion but it usually is with these fancy overpriced places, I wouldn’t have minded if it was actually nice! Young lad came to clear away as soon as we finished which was great but when we asked for the dessert menu he then went away, Sat another set of diners, got someone some drinks, took food to someone else and then god knows what else, I had to flag down someone else as the kids just wanted to leave! We then had to press the buzzer to get someone to take the order, the desserts finally arrived but again they forgot one of the kids deserts. I ordered the chocolate fondant cake which whilst delicious was also tiny. Kids enjoyed their ice cream and hubby enjoyed his crumble although way more apple than berry. I sent hubby out whilst I paid the bill as the service was terrible and we were seconds away from a meltdown. Overall super disappointed, would have enjoyed a takeaway more as you at least get everything in a timely manner. The staff just seemed so uninterested and I’m so annoyed as we don’t normally choose expensive nice places and it ruined the night for me, would not recommend, everyone experienced bad service as we were keeping an eye to see what was taking so long.

We attended here at the start of the month for a birthday meal (6 of us). The table wasnt quite ready (we were early) so the lovely gents behind the bar gave us a seat to have a couple of drinks at untill our table was sorted. We all ordered different meals and after waiting a short while, the waitress brought us out a pasta dish (nobody on the table ordered pasta). When she was told this, she ROLLED HER EYES and made an "urgh" sound before vanishing again. All the other meals came, apart from a pizza which had obviously been confused with the pasta dish. However, the chef quickly rustled up a fantastic pizza as requested so top marks for him. Whilst enjoying our delicious meals, a different waitress came to check on us and we ordered some more drinks.... which after 30 minutes didnt arrive. Thankfully the barman from earlier appeared to check on another table and we mentioned it to him, yet again he was fantastic and ran straight off to get them, even he looked fed up of the other 2! Finally, the lady who took the drinks order came back and apologised that "because her wifi crashed on her tablet it didnt save".. now this would have been absolutly fine... if she hadnt written it down with pen and paper. Summary: Food outstanding, service shocking, NOT including the polite and hardworking barman who seemed to be doing all the work himself!

Just had Sunday lunch which absolutely dreadful. Duck parfait starter turned up as just as a slab of obviously shop bought, tasteless mess with limp accompanyments. . No bread or crackers were with the dish and only received when asked for. The parfait even had the plastic sheet left on the base. My wife had Garlic mushrooms with a dry and crispy slice of bread which were luke warm at best. The lamb mains turned up cold as were the veg. It was returned to the kitchen where the chef had scraped the lamb and mash on to another plate and poured hot gravy over the plate. The veg were returned to the table having been microwaved. The whole lot was returned to the kitchen and I asked for a refund. The bar staff however were very apologetic and gave us a refund without question. Won't be returning.

Nice place to eat, downstairs away from the busy bar area. Menu was slightly different to the Online version. Took forever to get our first drink and that echoed the service thereafter, slow, slow, slow. Food was really nice but the waiting staff, there only seemed to be one , was constantly busy and therefore wasn't very attentive. We weren't once asked more more drinks by the barman who was wandering round. Location great Food great, service seriously needs to up their game.

Terrible. 16 people paid £16 each for afternoon tea. 1st few sandwiches were very good but only a few plates of them. Asked for more sandwiches and staff pulled a face. Waited approx an hour and half for additional sandwiches (egg and tuna on plain bread with great lumps of butter). 2 choices of cake. Slab chocolate fudge and a concoction of something nobody could identify and eat. There was a spicy sausage roll, ok and scones with jam and cream. 1 small bowl of whipped cream between 16 people. Eventually got more, some guests trVelled over a 100 miles for this get together. Mum to be was embarrassed at the offeri g and kept apologising. A number of us complained at the bar, and response was a shrug of the shoulders and 'sorry'. Staff service was non existent. We had to clear tables ourselves and then had to ask staff to remove all the dirty plates from the room. Very disappointed 😞 Appalling food and service. Would not recommend. Definately not worth the money.

Had great food with my partner and her son on a cold and blustery Saturday night. We had a starter and a main meal each. Food was excellent I had chilli for my main it was really tasty came with rice chips and a flat bread, my partner has chicken surf with Diane sauce, chips, and salad, her son had pasta with chicken and chorizo - all delicious. For starters I had soup, my partner has crispy belly pork and her son had the whitebait, prawn and calamari combo - again all good. Couldn't fit desserts in we were too full. The staff were great very attentive and welcoming.

On arriving at the hotel the entrance felt grubby and run down. Reception was very robotic, no personal service or conversation, no questions, we weren't asked about breakfast or dinner, just given a key. When we asked about parking we were given a permit to a carpark across the road, unfortunately this was full, mostly with cars without permits which meant we then had to go back to the hotel for further instruction as we weren't told on check in about an overflow carpark. All of the back and forth could have been avoided if we were fully informed on check in. We were on the second floor and when coming to the room, the bedroom door was wedged open, this then made us feel uneasy like someone could have been in it or the room was unfinished, it is also a fire risk leaving doors wedged opened and unattended which didn't fill us with confidence about where we were staying. On entering the room it felt unclean, it had a smell from previous occupants and the bed was thrown together and looked used, not made neatly, it just felt like no care had gone into it. The duvet cover was also marked, surely these rooms are checked after they are cleaned to ensure these things are rectified? All in all, it was very disappointing and on check out an older gentleman took our key and as we greeted him with morning, he said, you alright? We weren't asked how our stay was, which surely is a basic? Overall, very unwelcoming and no attention to detail.

Went here for a special occasion whilst up in the Lakes. The menu looks good and some decent specials. Starters were good, especially the pork belly. The main courses weren’t what I expected, the sea bream dish with a pea fricassee was basically pan fried sea bream with fried potatoes, peas, chorizo and baby onions. No sauce that I could pick up. Didn’t get this dish at all and I don’t think it was served as intended, I notice now it has been replaced with Sea Bass. The haddock and chips, was good but the chips were so big and so many of them it would have been better with fries. And the mushy peas had seen better days.
