Fabulous food and service great, new staff learning the ropes but very attentive and no issues. All of the food we ordered was excellent quality and for a couple who have had many many curries, I would say the food we had at Holi & Bang, was one of the best Indian meals we have ever had. The was a little more expensive than we would normally pay (main meal £13.00), but this was worth the extra. Would definitely recommend!

I visited Holi & Bhang back in March 2020 for my birthday, right before lockdown, and my family and I were absolutely amazed by the food. All the meals were delicious, as were the cocktails. The service was also very attentive and I was even treated to a complementary dessert by the chef. I really recommend the vegetarian thali if you want to try several different dishes for a great value. The birthday meal was so great that we visited again a few weeks ago and the food lived up to our memory!

Dear JTM, thanks for your very complimentary review and feedback. We're all absolutely delighted you enjoyed the entire experience. We regularly give customers complimentary dishes. We wait to see what you've ordered and then we choose something that we think will complement the flavours and enhance the taste-buds. Really look forward to seeing you again at the restaurant.

Hiding in a darkened street, this small restaurant serves fabulous food combined with attentive service - the menu is small but you are spoilt for choice. I eventually decided on Kozi Kari Chettinad which was absolutely delicious. Highly Recommended!!

We came here a few nights ago for a meal as a family. While the food is good we waited around 25-30 mins before we were offered a food menu, despite there only being two other tables in at the same time. Strange service. As for COVID measures - staff had face masks but they all had them positioned on their chins the whole time we were there, so what’s the point in wearing them? The tables are positioned FAR too close together. A table of four were seated right next to us and they might as well have been sitting at our table they were that close. Although there are hand sanitisers dotted about and signs supporting the social distancing, I’m afraid to say Holi and Bhang are not following the guidelines and this will make many feel uncomfortable throughout their meal. I’d recommend sticking to ordering a takeaway from them rather than dining unfortunately.

Thank you for your comments. I can assure you we are following all of the guidances as stated in the gov.uk document which can be downloaded at the following website: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/working-safely-during-coronavirus-covid-19/restaurants-offering-takeaway-or-delivery Regards social distancing, it states "Calculating the maximum number of customers that can reasonably follow social distancing guidelines (2m, or 1m with risk mitigation where 2m is not viable) at the venue. Taking into account total indoor and outdoor space, specific venue characteristics such as furniture as well as likely pinch points and busy areas". Also, with regards waiters/waitresses wearing facemasks, it states "It is not mandatory for workers in pubs, restaurants or takeaways to wear face coverings where they are not part of usual health and safety measures". We have carried out a full risk assessment at our restaurant which is in our Policies and Procedures Manual. You are welcome to read it when you next attend and are waiting for your take away. Thank you again. Hope to see you soon.

Started off well enough nice surrounds shown to our table straight away. Ordered papadoms two of us recieved 2 baskets in hindsight 1 was enough They took main order, well before we were finished our papadoms the main main was being served asked to take it back untill we where ready a pet hate of mine Was served again before asking for it within 10minutes the rush feeling was coming on. Had to ask for napkins at this stage Chef made his presence to ask about the meal which was very good no problem there We sat and waited 40minutes and the left food and plates hadn't been removed while we finished our drinks probably would of had another drink had we been asked The table light was dirty and dead flies in it,smudges on the glass mirrors A niece venue but they need to polish up there act, wouldn't return

The food was very tasty .....when it arrived eventually. We arrived at 6.30pm (group of 6). Our order was taken just before 7. The starters arrived just before 8 and the mains at 9pm! When we asked what was going on the manager/owner told us that it was "specialist food and took time to prepare." Looking at the rate that the kitchen was churning out takeaways, we felt fobbed off. In fact, the waitress told us that the chef had to finish some takeaway orders before getting to ours. Obviously in house diners are not a priority. We were given some free papadums and we were offered free coffees but at half 9 on a school night, we were all desperate to go home. The lone waitress was rushed off her feet. The manager just sat in the bar for most of the night rather than helping her or sorting out what was going on in the kitchen. He held court with some diners who were leaving for about half an hour, chatting away with them at a very non "socially distancing" 3 ft. (and no one was wearing a mask). W.r.t. COVID measures, the only concessions I could see were some hand sanitiser in the ladies' loo and a 2m distance sign on the floor. The tables were laid out with cutlery etc. when we arrived and the menus were the traditional bound book style (no disposable ones or QR codes to read in sight). If all the tables had been used, there wouldn't have been 1m between the groups of diners.

Thanks for your comments. He isn't a manager. He is one of the owners of the restaurant, hotel and building. He doesn't work at the restaurant. He came in to the restaurant for a quiet drink and a chit chat with one of his business clients. The day you came was a Thursday. One of your group confronted him and commented you were waiting a long time for your food. He apologised and explained that it had been a busy Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday because of the "eat out to help out" scheme and that most of the staff were tired and were given the Thursday off to recover for the week-end. The dishes that day were being cooked by a single chef in the kitchen on the expectation that Thursday would be quiet. The member of your group didn't accept the apology or the explanation for why the food was taking time so the owner apologised again and repeated the explanation again. He then offered the group complimentary nibbles (papadams and spices) to eat whilst waiting for your ordered dishes. When the member of your group continued to not accept the apology or the explanation or the complimentary nibbles, the owner said other than turn the gas up on the cooker there is no way of speeding up the food being cooked. Although this will affect the quality of food you are given which my chef will not accept. The member of your group seemed aggravated with this comment so the owner said either sit down and wait for your food or leave. There is no more he could say. I'm sorry you had to wait for your food. On occasions, we do "authentic indian street food" events where the atmosphere and style is as you would find in India, i.e. fast. Outside of that, our main focus is on the quality of our food. Which on some occasions may not be "fast". Apologies again, you had to wait for your food. Hope to see you again in the future.

Visited on the strength of reviews, and unfortunately the experience didn't quite live up to expectations. The biggest problem was service - which was painfully slow - only one person serving a fairly full eat in restaurant as well as taking delivery/takeout orders through the restaurant to the front desk. There was a lad clearing tables (but no more) and a lady at the bar who didn't really interact with customers at all, and as a result every stage involved significant hold ups and delays. Drinks were fine - an excellent nimbu paani for me, and my daughter very much enjoyed her cocktail (my husband stuck to beer!). No amuse bouche was served, despite it being listed on the menu, and I didn't see anyone else get one either, though poppadums were being vigorously upsold (these came with a particularly neon mint sauce). We had a couple of very nice onion/spinach bhajees to start, and these were excellent. Crisp, perfectly cooked, nicely presented (though the flat slates seemed to cause a few problems for service). Then it started to go downhill a little. My daughter's butter chicken was far too hot, and quite a lot of the chicken was pretty tough. There was no evidence of any butter or cream in the sauce. My Murgh Makani was also very spicy. Now I like spicy food, but I want it to have flavour, not just heat, and the only discernible taste was tomato. Rather like a bottle of passata with a load of chilli powder added. My husband ordered a chicken Dhansak, and this was also very highly spiced, but curiously sloppy, as though over blended, and lacking any real taste of lentil. OK, but very underwhelming. Overall, for a meal that was not inexpensive, a bit of a let down. Sadly not one we'll bother repeating. My husband also commented that using the gent's loo was not a pleasant experience. On a positive note, covid measures were being pretty well adhered to (though I would have appreciated sanitiser at the table as well as at the entrance), but I think a couple of tables fewer would have made things more comfortable all round.

Hi MizGeorge, I'm so sorry you didn't have a great experience. All I can do is apologise. I won't respond to all of your points via social media but please can you give our restaurant a ring and ask to speak with our manager, Tony, or our head chefs, Mahesh or Nathu, I'm sure they will be able to reassure you that we use the best ingredients available including meats, fish, vegetables, lentils and spices with a total focus on authentic traditional flavours. All feedback is useful, good or bad, so we will improve on our service when the manager is not on duty. Thanks again.

Food is good but if you plan to sit in don't because service is Diplorable and although they have only 4 tables our wait was two and a half hours. Manager was not even at hand to hear our displeasure. He did not even want to hear us. They cater to takeaway which is an hour and a half anyway. So you have just lost 6 possible future customers. No wonder less tasty restaurants do better.

So I was recommended this place by one of my freinds. We went for a meal with family and it was a real treat. The table bookinb was easy, thanks to Rhui Kaur she looked after that. The staff were new but they did try there best to look after us and I think we all shgould give them some time to get to know the menu. The Chef was great , not only he came to ask us about our prefrence but also made sure that we had the best quality of food . I must admit that after a long long time I have eaten such a great , authentic Indian food in UK and it did reminde me of home. All I can say it is a hidden gem in Durham and it will sure give run for money to rest of the Indian food joints in the region. Thanks again and I will sure go back if I get a table.

I had visited the restaurant with family to try some Indian cuisines and I was totally satisfied for my visit to the restaurant and the way chief visited us to get feed back for the food he prepared. And my personal favourite was the Murgh Kesari Pasanda. And if you ever had an opportunity to visit the restaurant please try this and trust me the dish will become your favourite one...

We called in to book a table to have food later that night and was pleasantly surprised to hear a familiar Indian accent book us in. We had to shift our dinner a little late due to social distancing but we were happy to. We were shown to our table almost straightaway, drinks came in promptly and the Indian server gave brilliant recommendations for our English friends despite their aversion to spice. As for the food we had goan fish curry, piyazi, thali and the tikka kurma - it was really good food with very authentic taste and amazing dessert!! The server was very polite and it was nice that she didn't disturb with constant checking up, i find that simply annoying. The staff gave us complimentary dessert with a rather sweet chocolate message. Very kind! Made our evening very special. The only negative was that the kitchen was rather loud, could hear the voices despite closed doors!! Scared a lot of other patrons. But will definitely recommend! Cheers.

Dear Sierraj.a, thank you for your excellent review and feedback. We're all really glad you had a great experience. We totally focus on keeping the dishes authentic and traditional, as you would find in the best restaurants in all of India. I think you'll find the kitchens in India are noisy as well!!! I've told them repeatedly to keep the noise down but I think it's all part of the full India experience!! I don't know, maybe it helps them with the cooking. Not sure if you met the chefs on the night, they usually come out during service and introduce themselves to the customers. They are full of character!!!!! I'll tell them again to keep the noise down.

What an absolute treat. We booked a table as we were staying in the Farnley towers hotel, you get 15% discount as a resident which was a nice surprise but the FOOD was fantastic. A wide range and freshly prepared to order. We were a group of 4 and were all delighted with our meals, starters and main course, which arrived well presented and full of taste and flavours. Portions were good so much so we couldn’t fit in a dessert.we all agreed this was the best Indian meal we had ever eaten.

On our first visit to Durham from Liverpool we visited this resturant as we were staying nearby. Lovely choice of food & drinks. Food was absolutely first class, would even say it was the best Indian resturant we have ever been to. Also, service was wonderful, the manager took time to explain menu choices to us and her overall customer service was impeccable. Can’t wait visit Durham again even just to go to this restaurant!

Changed plans meant we got a table here at the last minute and we are so glad we did. Tony the manager took time to chat to us about the food and the vision of chef Mahesh. The menu reflects different regional cuisines and everything we had was interesting, fresh and delicious. There is a discount for those staying at the guesthouse and you can even try a hookah pipe! Our table looked over the garden where there is an outdoor seating area, which would be lovely in warmer weather. We hope to return soon.

Hi susancD9119JB. Absolutely brilliant review and feedback. We definitely have a vision of what we're trying to achieve. It is exactly as you've stated, authentic traditional dishes from different regions of India. We hope to re-introduce our special events soon where we go off-menu and focus on South Indian dishes, Goan dihes, Bengali dishes, Keralan dishes etc. Hope to see you back soon.
