Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Awful pub. Rude staff including the boss sadly. Really expensive drinks and doesn't allow dogs. Been told it was very bad and it was worse than expected

Nice pub, great atmosphere and welcoming locals. A fire on to sit beside and good selection of beer. Clean loos too. There’s a snug inside the front door that would be great for a session.

Went to volunteer arms for food. Black pudding sausage stories portion could not have been any smaller, if there was any black pudding in it I couldn't taste it. Overall very very disappointing. Fish pie was more like fish soup, but it did have a...reasonable amount of fish, vegetables consisted of 2 small florets of broccoli, 1 small desert spoon of turnip and 4 green beans. Had to go for a burger to fill up.More

No stars as the food was the worst I have ever had in my life. sausage and mash. No words to describe the solidified good that was passed off as mash! It was served with a MUG of tinned peas poured all over the top....All I saw was a bowl of peas in front of me. DISGUSTING!!! Hard nose manager trying to discuss my complaint over the bar with me in front of customers. Devoid of all manners Indignant that I complained, she said she 'has never had a complaint before'. ( then read all the reviews then). The startee made me feel sick and when I mentioned it, this woman replied that she likes it..( thick goo jelly poured over a started salad) Worse, this woman (said she owned the place) served a customer who had a small dog sitting on top of the tables customers eat from. Ientioned this too her and she replied she didn't see the dog. Really? As you served the food? Dogs jumping up at me as I was trying to eat and she refuted everything and finger pointed. Meal was Def the worst I have ever had and I felt sick. A mug of tinned peas poured on the meal? I could see she was giving me lip so I said to her if she continutled , I would be leaving a review. She changed her time immediately and said 'i will have a word with the chef'. Is that after you have served up around 50 of his meals??? Some 'manager.'..you were furious because I dared to complain and tried to belittle me in front of you customers at the bar. Noye..you have to listen to your customers!More

Went to Dunbar for the day and came here for lunch. Lovely friendly pub right next to the harbour. Pub was quiet when we came in and the fire was roaring which was lovely. Got busier ,the barman said the boats were being put back...into the sea so all the owners were in the pub. Was a great atmosphere though Food was delicious and arrived quickly. Would definetly recommend and would go back.More

Hot smoked Salmon was excellent. Main course of Smoked Haddock best I have had for a long time. Great courtesy from the Barman and keeping us topped up with ale. Great value as well, just North of £45 for two of us for an evening...out!More

Popped in last night for a drink and ended up having a meal, Wife had scampi that she's still raving about, safe to say she enjoyed it. I had the stovies with black pudding and haggis through it, honestly the best stovie's I've ever tasted,...just wish I'd been given a bit of crusty bread to mop things up. All in all the pub had very friendly and helpful barstaff too, we'll be back.More

Can't praise this place enough. As a family we've gone on and off for years. This evening was so lovely, food and service was excellent, it doesn't change but that's what makes it for us, it's so good/traditional, it doesn't have to. Look forward to...our next visit.More

We've decided to stop in Dunbar to visit the harbor and the ruins of the castle. So as we were a "wee" hungry, we chose the Volunteer as it was close and had good reviews. The food is excellent, locally sourced I think and prepared...in a heart-warming style (kind of like grandma's). I personally recommend the smoked haddock with mash and vegetables. Exquisite sensation! The place filled up with locals, the emplacement overlooking the port, all helps to create a welcoming atmosphere!More
