Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Overpriced mean spirited £12.50 breakfast . One egg , one sausage , and one tiny(1) streaky rasher ,everything else , one hash brown ,one tiny pot of beans and a small portion of mushrooms, one slice of toast. Tea served in tiny half filled cups..., not included ,that's fine but offer mugs not thimbles. £28 for two (Not including service as shouted out on the bill) Poor value all round Toilets were not great either.More

Food bland and service (although very friendly) was very slow indeed. Not a COVID issue I fear, just lack of training.

Firstly this is no longer Hello Sailor! It is called The waterside or something similar! As a local I should know so apologies!! As Ale and Oyster then Hello Sailor we have enjoyed some good meals. The position on Ventnor seafront is ideal . Following...lockdown and glorious weather a group of us decided to give the NEW owners a try. Social distancing observed. The day was scorching so sitting outside with no umbrella was a trial. It may have just broken but no substitute available in August?? Service was attentive initially ,drink s , wine and water brought speedily. Then the wait !! Over an hour for food. We chatted and watched the world go by. The chicken in a pepper/ tomato and onion sauce was very tasty. The accompanying sour cream , wraps etc were ideal. Calamari was fine as was the vegetarian all day breakfast . The fish and chips were adequate. Not particularly good. The table was not cleared and we were not asked if we required pudding or coffee so we decided against. Then the issue of the bill!, There were at least two mistakes which as a couple of our number run hotels/ restaurants were quickly identified. In no way am I saying this was deliberate BUT underlined the feeling of disorganisation. So many different servers came to our table ( rather than one taking responsibility) that I am surprised that there were not more mistakes.’ However this is a lovely venue serving adequate food so give it a go ——- especially as the Government pays half on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday!More

Stopped in for breakfast yesterday, the waitress was very friendly but that’s where it stopped! There were no sanitizer anywhere, when we sat down we noticed a woodlouse next we my husbands head (it was dead!) we ordered coffee, juice and water, the water glass...had lip stick marks on it (not good with the current situation) this was replaced but the second glass wasn’t much cleaner! I then took the top off my juice and it had mould under the rim! That was enough we cancelled our food order to leave shockingly we were still charged for the coffee despite our experience! The waitress as lovely as she was had dirty marks all over her trousers! We most definitely not be going back here! Such a shame as a prime location!More

We needed lunch and being just on the beach across the road I decided to try out Hello Sailor. I knew it in their previous name, Ale & Oyster when it was hit or miss as to how good the food was - anyway I...ordered one prawn sandwich on brown and one in a baguette. Of the two, the brown was better (of course a brown baguette might have made a difference)! and they provided some crisps to go with it. Lovely juicy prawns, excellent and very tasty. The next day I made the mistake of going to The Mill Bay to buy a prawn sandwich (to save money), a big mistake as their prawns are smaller unfrozen ones and they served it with some coleslaw. Another time it will be back to Hello Sailor - I learned my lesson.More

Dived in for a cold beer and some food with friends and children Made very welcome and the partner/owner Sean was exceptional with his understanding of the beers and spirits on offer. A good knowledge of local gin too. Very clean and quick service when...we were in there mid afternoon.More

Gave this place the benefit of the doubt after reading bad reviews. Service was not good, took a long time to be seen to atall, then once we finally ordered took over an hour to get a main course. Also didn't have any sauvingon blanc...left. Food was actually okay but did get a crab shell in my chicken tagliatelle. Wouldn't return here.More

Was here with my family and we waited over an hour for our food, the restaurant wasn't particularly busy either so found this quite strange. Once the food eventually came it was quite nice!

Ale and oyster was my favourite restaurant- unfortunately this place does not deliver the same. The scampi and chips tasted like something you could get at any pub- nothing special about it! I’m really routing for this new venture and hope they make some improvements...- I’ll hopefully come backMore

This was a return visit, we had previously been when it was the Ale and Oyster and throughly enjoyed our last visit, we were really looking forward to returning. However we were so disappointed, the menu was very random, mostly just a few sandwiches and...some hot dishes, bearing in mind we went there for an evening meal. There was a poor choice on a specials board which we had to go back out into the porch to see. The service was poor, we had to ask if we could order drinks. The owner was very uninterested in our presence and seemed more concern with leaving to feed his horses. We gave them the benefit of the doubt with the name change but we will not be returning. Most disappointing.More

Came here after looking at nearby highly reviewed restaurant whilst staying in Ventnor. No way could we eat there. Saw this menu, and walked inside to feel immediately better suited. Calm, adult, Randy Crawford playing and a smiley welcome from staff. I ate a creamy...chicken tagliatelle and my husband a seafood risotto from specials board, followed by a toblerone cheesecake. SUBLIME. Watched the surfers through the window, and boats travelling across our view, very relaxing. The staff were charming. If you want excellent food, and a grown up atmosphere, eat here in preference. We had a great evening.More

We are vegetarians so sometimes find it difficult to have a choice of menu. However the waiter suggested several options and we ended up having a vegetarian burger which was very tasty.

For an unplanned opportunist lunch stop, Hello sailor could not have been a better choice. Without a doubt the nicest people we spoke to on our most recent trip to the island. The service was first class, the food was also lovely. Add to that...the nice decor, ambience and sea views it's a real winner.More

The location is fantastic on the esplanade of this lovely Victorian town . Inside it’s bright & clean there are tables inside and out it has a bar. The food is good presentation is ok. But the place lacks something. There is no atmosphere or...ambience.We visited on a Saturday evening in July in the middle of Ventnor fringe week and it’s not busy. A real shame as it’s a nice place.More
