I went to shikara to celebrate my 18th birthday. We are from Stoke on Trent and will definitely be going back! The whole team couldn’t have done anymore to make me feel more special. The table was set with a balloon and other decorations and the meal was topped off with a complimentary birthday icecream and coffee shot! The food was also possibly the best Indian food I have ever had and there was a wide variety to choose from. I couldn’t recommend this curry house enough! We will definitely be returning.

I'm a regular to Shikara (both dining in the restaurant and taking away) and have never been disappointed. The service is second to none and the food is equally as good. I'm set in my ways so haven't tried everything on their menu, but I've had a number of chicken and fish dishes and they've always been exceptional. Whether you're a Whitley Bay native or travelling from elsewhere in the North East, Shikara comes highly recommended.

Very good food and service. We opted for the set menu which was very good value and had about 12 choices for starters and mains so quite a wide selection. If you wanted to choose a main off the al la carte then it was only £2 extra.

Just a bit of history to begin. Before Lockdown we visited the restaurant for a birthday meal. We booked a table for 8pm, we sat at 8.45, got our starters at 10pm and the mains at 10.45! Az, the owner, was full of apologies, comped the meal, and insisted this was a one off and to give them another chance. So back to the present. We booked a takeaway online at 9a.m as they insisted on early booking to 'avoid disappointment' to collect at 7.45. On arrival it was obvious that the place was in total chaos. As we had prepaid we chose to wait. Big Mistake! It took over 2 hours to actually get an apology from the man on the front desk who I felt sorry for as Az the owner hid in the kitchen leaving him to face the flak. He eventually showed his face at 10.45 to apologise to the irate customers left and we eventually got our food at 11.15! Yes that's right 11.15, three and half hours late!! Onto the food Lamb Chatt? No Chatt Chicken Biryani? Not a single piece of chicken in it, in fact full of vegetables Chicken Pathia? The chicken breast was so overcooked it was like leather. Lamb Bhuna? My son said it was still grazing! So Azad, if you read these, and I will be e-mailing you as well, we gave you another chance and you failed miserably. So I and a lot of other customers I spoke to will now be going elsewhere. The lack of service, quality, and communication when times are busy needs to be seen to be believed, it truly is staggeringly bad. And one final thing. On Facebook they placed a post stating early booking was essential. There were over 110 other posts attached to it complaining about the bad/lack of service on the night. Azad's response to the negative posts? Delete them!! Absolutely shocking to treat customers that way and not acceptable

Dear Allan can I take this opportunity to wish you and your family a very Happy New Year. Best wishes for 2021 from Az and team here at Shikara. Can i also take this opportunity to apologise wholeheartedly for ruining your NYE. We have endeavoured where we could to speak to a large proportion of the customers on the telephone to offer a personal apology and explain the situation. The problem was caused by a technical glitch with our ordering system in that when we reached the optimum bookings, we were unable to turn it off and prevent further orders being placed. Our technical team eventually managed to switch it off, however this was not until a considerable amount of orders had been placed. Even after the original glitch seemed to have been rectified it did continue in another format in that when orders were being placed and money taken from the payment system, the orders were not reaching us thus giving some customers the impression the order was placed. After receiving the orders, the challenge was to produce the meals get them delivered or out for collection and we simply could not cover the extra demand. We have refunded a lot of customers and we would also like to offer those customers who did not receive a meal, who had not yet paid the same meal at half price. We have a list of those people so please get in touch and we will sort this out for you in the future, whenever you choose to order. New Year’s Eve is normally one of the highlights of our calendar here at Shikara, with the restaurant full, great food and drinks and a fantastic party atmosphere and we miss it all during these trying times and we can’t wait to be able to have customers in the restaurant again. Since we closed last March, we have like many other businesses had to adapt to providing a delivery service, a service that we did not provide prior to then. We would like to think that on the whole in this time, we have given a fantastic service and tried to keep things as normal as we can in providing you with award winning food from Shikara. We pride ourselves on the service and the food that we produce from this restaurant and we are extremely disappointed with the mistakes that occurred on NYE and again apologise to you for this. We went to Shikara's as a group of 4 with 3 of the party celebrating birthdays. The staff set the table with birthday balloons and made all 3 of the party feel extra special. Having dined here before, we knew that the service and food would be great, but this time even exceeded our expectations. Fantastic service, chatty waiters and owner helping us enjoy the occasion with the most amazing food.. we all cleared our plates which I'd be amazed if anyone didn't. The evening ended with a sparkling firework desert... what more could anyone ask for..

Booked a meal for delivery on NYE a couple of nights beforehand. Got a call from the restaurant at 4pm asking if we wanted to pay by card then, or pay in cash upon delivery. We chose to pay on delivery thankfully. Delivery was booked for 7.30 although there was a warning that there might be a small delay. When it got to 8.30 with no sign of food, I tried ringing but the phone was off the hook. I looked on their facebook page, and was alarmed to see there were loads of people whose food had not turned up a couple of hours after the booked time. I kept trying to ring without success, and could see from facebook comments that the situation was just getting worse and worse. Some people had waited almost 4 hours with no delivery. At 11pm (3.5 hours after our booked slot) we gave up and made ourselves a very late dinner. I was half expecting the food to turn up at some point, but it never materialised. We have had no contact at all from Azad, and as another reviewer has pointed out, their response to the 100-odd complaints on fb was to delete them. No apology, nothing. It's worth pointing out that something similar happened when they started doing deliveries in lockdown, but not as bad as last night. On that occasion our food was over 2 hours late, and that happened with a lot of people, but at least we got it in the end. It is obvious that they took far too many bookings last night. It seems greed is more important than customer service. We have been loyal customers for years but I will never use this restaurant again. Such a shame as the food is always great, but last night was beyond a joke.

Me and my Husband Went here Yesterday Evening As Soon As We Walked in We Got Greeted Off The Manager HAPPY NEW YEAR.He Was Really Chatty To Us Which Was Nice To See He Made Us Feel So Welcome food Was amazing . Bedt Curry Weve Had in a long time. Overall 10 out of 10 this is what you want in a good restaurant excellent customer service and great food.

There’s an excellent choice of food for everyone. As vegans it’s sometimes difficult to find more than a handful of dishes but here there were many options. The food was very good and the staff made every effort to make sure we knew what was suitable to us, they even subbed the complimentary Irish coffee at the end without us even asking! The prices were very reasonable too. We will definitely be back.

Unbelievable! The service, the food even the other customers are exceptional. Tasty starters, perfect mains, rice cooked to perfection. It's clear the clientele they attract compared to the other available restaurants- staff singing happy birthday to a child says a lot about their employees. Free 2 hour parking near by. Really fresh crispy poppadoms. Even down to the plates not one was chipped or cracked to the whole business being excessively clean. Toilets look like they are cleaned after each person! Plenty of COVID 19 procedures in place plus staff have t shirts also specific for the pandemic. Faultless and totally worth every penny.

After Az and the team had a nightmare on NYE we received a personal apology and the offer of the same meal we had ordered for 1/2 price. Tonight we took up the offer and have just finished our meals which were absolutely fantastic! The food was excellent quality as always and piping hot . I would recommend than anyone who had the NYE experience give Az and the team a chance to put it right and take them up on their offer. You definitely won’t regret it

Ordered a large meal tonight to celebrate my birthday. Greeting on arrival was lovely and was giving a bottle to wait with. When I got home we realised two items where missing from our order. We rang up and within 40 mins on a very busy night the two dishes arrive. The team at Shikara are always so happy and helpful. They’re my go to for any Indian takeaway and would recommend to everyone. Nothing is too much to ask.

We ordered a takeaway for our festive night as we put up the xmas tree. We telephoned our order in a couple days in advance. Nothing was a problem with the order and time of delivery. Food arrived early and as promised a couple of beers for our festive evening (on the house!!) The best curry in town there was even free popadoms and a naan bread included! Thank you to all the staff and really friendly gentleman on the phone. We’ll be ordering again soon! New favourite.

We ordered here tonight for a takeaway as we have tried the restaurant and know it is lovely and thought we’d get the same standard food also paying miles more than we would pay at our usual takeaway (spice bay) however we were completely wrong. We were extremely dissappointed to order a jalfrezi and it to be mainly tomato sauce and no spice to it at all literally not even a kick to it, it seemed very watered down and it was also luke warm has to be the mildest jalfrezi we’ve ever had i even checked the cartain to see if they had gave us the right curry. The garlic nan, onion baji was nice the chips lovely and poppadoms nice however we don’t spend £30 on a takeaway to have nice sides we expect the main to be nice and it really wasn’t, it was nothing like what they serve in the restaurant so i think people should take note that if ordering a takeaway from here even though you are still paying higher prices because it’s coming from a restaurant it really isn’t the same and judging by previous reviews I can see we aren’t the only ones dissappointed. Won’t be ordering again for a takeaway unfortunately and probably won’t be returning to the restaurant in a hurry either as this has put us off. I have given 3 stars because the sides were nice and the delivery didn’t take too long.

We have just had another fantastic night out at Shikara, the food was very tasty and the staff great as always. People say Whitley Bay nightlife is dying out but that wasn’t evident tonight. The restaurant was extremely busy yet the food was delivered to our table in a timely fashion and the staff attentive as always. 5 * Azad, well done to you and the whole team and we will see you again very soon.

We opted for the “ Special Deal” Nothing “Special” about this. Cheap ingredients, served within minutes of ordering. I have never, ever had a Dansak served with tinned pineapple (probably to bulk it up to detract from the insipid anaemic, tasteless prawns) To say we where disappointed is a massive understatement, especially as this place had come highly recommended.
