We stopped by for a drink, which turned into 2 in the snug little bar and chatted to locals. The pub is dog friendly and they get given dog biccies too. Staff were friendly and chatted too. The bar area is very traditional, with a darts board, copper bits and a great fireplace. There's also a 50s juke box which apparently still works. We didn't eat but the dining areas had plenty of people eating and the food looked delicious. Outside there is an amazing garden with outstanding view, which must be amazing to sit in in good weather. We'll definitely be back

Fine old country pub deep in the Sussex countryside, and an easy drive from Midhurst. Ample parking is adjacent. Not all that big inside and no sign of any trendy interior work; all furnishings classically a shade of pub brown. Didn't really test the menu as I was there on a group Xmas meal. I think I must have seen all the festive options pass by, in addition to mine, and everything looked great and seemed to be enjoyed by all in attendance. In fact, having seen platefuls of the stuff wafting around, I wish I'd gone for the usual traditional turkey dinner etc but I'd had exactly that at a similar event the day before. The Unicorn's version looked umpteen times better. So on this occasion, I selected the pork fillet wrapped in bacon with gnocchi and a mustard sauce. Not overly seasonal, but cranberry sauce did seem to enhance it rather well. Anyway, there was plenty of it, the meat was tender and tasty, and the gnocchi was a welcome change from potatoes, so good work. Preceded by a rough and ready pork terrine and followed by an ok white chocolate blondie. The young ladies working the tables were cheerful and very efficient, so a very well organised lunchtime for us all. Definitely worth a visit under normal circumstances, I'd say.

A great little pub, nice beer garden, village green setting, friendly staff, nice food. Even had some pear dog treats for our Romanian rescue Henry - no wonder nearly every table in the garden had a dog or two! We rocked up in a small campervan and were allowed to stay overnight (Saturday) so could use the WCs until midnight. Quiet location and not too noisy despite a 50th birthday party happening. I found the food a bit expensive for pub fodder - nice burger, nice salad but £8.50 for 4 thin slices of cheese and a small selection of biscuits with some whittled down celery? Ouch! £72 for 4 drinks, 2 mains and a shared cheese platter...

Me and my partner had some lunch. We made our order. My partner ordered goats cheese salad and I ordered cottage pie . After waiting 30 mins a waitress came out and told us there is no goats cheese on the menu. So she changed her order to coronation chicken. Her food was good . My cottage pie was 15.50 so I was expecting something filling and fresh home cooked. It was served in a little mini pie dish. It was a small childs portion. The vegetables in the pie were clearly frozen. No garlic or fresh herbs. Just tasted overly of oxo. A side portion of veg was tiny as well. After I finished I went straight to a shop and bought some food to fill myself up as this really lacked sufficient calories. Service was ok. Just food was over priced for what you get. Garden is lovely well looked after and a great view.

We turned up for lunch while walking the South Downs Way, soaking wet. They had no problem with us sitting in the pub, dripping everywhere. The service was Ok, the kitchen staff obviously wanted to go home so were hesitant about doing food for us. The soup was hot and good, the pork baguette was fatty and tasteless. The Young's Original was outstanding, highly recommended. The atmosphere was very much locals having their midweek lunchtime pint, but friendly and helpful enough

food used to be good. very disappointed last time we were there . £15.00 for a venison burger chips and salad. Overpriced considering i had only 8 chips on my plate. The pork came with no vegetables at a cost of 15.00 too. we were still starving when we left!!!

This pub is thriving and deserves to do so. It is set in the lea of the South Downs in a delightful quiet and picturesque village. The food was excellent and above the normal pub-grub of many similar venues in the area. The service was a little slow but that was because they were overwhelmed at a time when the thought demand would diminish because of coronavirus but the quality of the offer made this a continuing popular destination.

I always told my children that no food is ever disgusting. However, after visiting the Unicorn today for lunch I have to use that very same word. Disgusting. I had a hot chicken wrap with herby mayonnaise. The wrap itself was chewy and leathery and as for the chicken? It were little bits of leftovers scraped off the bone and not the slices I had expected. Priced at £8 it was really not nice at all and although I am local I shall never go there again.

Sadly a VERY disappointing lunch with our friends. We have met up here on a couple of occasions as it's a halfway point, & have been happy in the past, but something seems to have gone awry since our last visit. Even though it wasn't at all busy our reserved table was squashed in a dark corner so we asked if we could move to the lighter side of the room, which we did & took our cutlery with us as no other tables laid up. There was a big difference between the quality of the dishes ordered & I had to return my battered fish & chips as the fish was inedible. Hard rubbery batter which I could hardly cut through & the 2 pieces I tried were a funny texture & the fish was very wet. I certainly wasn't going to continue. On returning it to the bar I ordered a ploughmans as had gone right off the idea of another cooked dish. Had to return to the bar to ask for a fresh set of cutlery. Nobody tried to ask if we wanted any more drinks so we had to go to the bar & get ourselves. The desserts were good - again no asking if we'd like any coffee so paid our bill & left. There didn't seem to be anybody in front of house except for a young lady behind the bar & the lad serving - both who seemed of student age. Perhaps the chef in the kitchen was in charge but the whole experience was sadly lacking. Unfortunately the Unicorn is now off our list.

From the moment you walk in the place has a friendly vibe and staff. A great choice of beers and drinks behind the bar. The menu had a range of traditional dishes with slight twists for the better. The four of us had fantastic meals and you could tell it was freshly prepared and a proper kitchen / chef. The portion sizes were just right and the dessert menu had to be sampled. Looking forward to my next visit.

Stumbled across this place by accident. We're so glad we did. Nothing fancy on the inside, but garden and views are breath taking. Amazing tracks to go walking straight from the car park. Now for those who like there food. It's fantastic. The best curried parsnip soup I've ever eaten and the pheasant curry was sublime. Will definitely be going back. Well worth a visit.

Good choice for a lunchtime with some not so common options, which we had. Huss and chips - the huss was very tasty as was the pigeon breast in a savoury peppercorn gravy with a nice selection of vegetables. Interesting real ale and attentive service. Varied walks from the pub - we combined two short ones to give ourselves a nearly two hour walk to work up an appetite

I love the Unicorn! Rarely am I able to give such a glowing review. The staff are delightful, the ambience quintessentially English and the food simply doesn’t get better. I have eaten at the Unicorn on numerous occasions and never have I been disappointed. Abroad, the English cuisine is often mocked or criticised, but the food at the Unicorn is testament to the fact that exciting, perfectly prepared food DOES exist in England! And the location! Well what can I say; the view from the beer garden - at anytime of the year - is akin to a pastoral scene of yesteryear. I live in an area where we are spoilt for choice when it comes to country pubs, but the Unicorn Inn stands out as one of the very best. For a genuine, rural, West Sussex experience, I can wholeheartedly recommend The Unicorn Inn, Heyshott - at the foot of the South Downs

The Unicorn always has friendly staff and a creative menu with superbly cooked dishes. I can honestly say it serves some of the best pub food I have eaten. The garden has great views and inside cosy and welcoming.

Had the pleasure of experiencing the Unicorn Inn's Sunday lunch yesterday for a Family Birthday of 13 people. From initial booking request, to the all important food and drinks service, there was nothing to fault, only cheerful fun and banter, ably supported by Laura and the efficiently friendly table personnel. The cosy and welcoming ambience of the Unicorn is complemented by it's idyllic English Village setting, nestled discreetly amongst the rolling hills and farmland of the South Downs. Would we return ? - You Betcha ! by general family consensus
