Late afternoon visit

Visited late afternoon to make use of the last day of eat out to help out in an old favourite. No fish due to the busy day but was still plenty on the menu, we opted for scampi & chips with curry and a battered sausage, chips and curry. Both arrived quickly along with our drinks and they were delicious! Could tell they were freshly cooked. Staff were polite and could see they were very busy cleaning and keeping things covid safe. Whilst we were eating could see one member of staff cleaning all the salt shakers and vinegar pots between each customer & hand sanitiser was available - excellent!

I would definitely recommend that anyone who has been on lockdown , can safely shop and sit in Mary lamberts Cafe and enjoy a lovely cup of coffee and a tasty meal .. I was very nervous about visiting as we’ve not been out since March 15 .. I suffer from severe anxiety but the staff , the layout of the cafe and safety measures that they have been put into place all helped me enjoy my coffee in safety .. it was lovely seeing everyone again ., I have had delivered Saturday boxes and my chia bread and everything was delicious.. thank you to all for your kindness and excellent work .. Fantastic! We popped in for a sit-down fish and chip meal on Thursday mid-afternoon. My husband ordered the regular fish and chips special, I ordered the small. The portions were great, the food was fresh and cooked perfectly and the batter melted in your mouth! I really liked the tartar sauce, it tasted homemade. This was our first visit but we will definitely return. The staff were friendly and the restaurant was lovely, bright and clean. I thought the prices were great too, especially given the quality. 10/10 from me.

Best fish I have had in a long time. Great deals small fish and chips, coffee or tea, ginger sponge or apple pies and custard 12.99. Fish pure white, can taste the freshness batter lovely. Staff welcoming qnd accommodating, very clean and plenty of space even when full.

Fingers used to handle cakes

Bought two ginger slices, which the lady behind the counter picked up with her fingers. There were tongs available for her to use. I should have asked her to use the tongs and for a replacement, but felt uncomfortable doing so. I just took them home and sliced off the edges where she’d handled them before eating.

we've been coming a while now and it just keeps getting better and better. The quality of fish and chips is spot on! All pies, bread etc is gorgeous too. Christine was our waitress today and so polite and friendly, as are all staff. Looking forward to our next visit! Love Wendy and Laura from peterlee xx

Made to feel uncomfortable from the start

Unfriendly service. Seem to prefer the locals. Waited for menus after asking twice. Waited longer to be served. Missing items. Out of date milk no butter or jam for scones. Then had to wait around to pay after asking 4 times to pay. Wasn’t a comfortable visit and won’t be coming back

Fish platter and shakes

Stunning food. Great chips. Light batter. Everything cooked to perfection. We had cherry berry milkshakes, which were lovely. My 15 yr old son said it was the best meal he ever had. Presentation was good. Everything was clean. The place is light and airy as it has a high ceiling.

Lovely food but small portions

Visited on Good Friday as I wasn’t able to stand in queues at our normal chippy so we decided to treat ourselves. Staff noticed I was on crutches and very quickly found us a seat close to entrance so we didn’t have to walk far. We both decided to have the small cod special at £11.99 each along with extra peas/beans. We did have quite a long wait for our food. The restaurant was reasonably busy but it wasn’t packed out. When it arrived my husbands portion was ok but mine was tiny. It wasn’t even a child sized portion. The food was delicious but at nearby £14 a portion I certainly expected more than what was effectively a large fish bite. I really should have complained in the shop but I’m quite ill and didn’t feel up to arguing in front of a busy shop. On the plus side the fish tasted beautiful. The chips were lovely golden home made ones. Mushy peas were tinned by were edible. I’d buy again if I were passing ( although perhaps not the fish but I wouldn’t come here specially.?

I came here today hoping for a nice lunch with family before my shift at work I have to say that the customer service was good seats comfortable and music from the kitchen was good but that is also the prices for the portion sizes is shocking especially so when being charged £1 for a single slice of bread which is a joke alone then my fish was completely tasteless and chips extremely dry this establishment advertises how many awards they win for their fish and chips well quite frankly I have no idea who is voting for this but I assure you I will not be back at this cafe

See why they got award ...but just go for nice fish & chips.

You can see why they have won awards....very light and tasty crisp batter over very white fresh fish. We had cod & haddock and both just right. Menu was a bit confusing if you just wanted fish & chips on its own with no extras....could do with simplifying. Some choices over priced. Just go for good fish & chips .........as restaurant & toilets just plain. Service good.
