Petersham Nurseries captivates diners with its enchanting, rustic atmosphere, often highlighted as the perfect backdrop for a meal. While the food's taste and uniqueness receive some accolades, many guests consider the offerings overpriced and disappointing in value. Service experiences fluctuate, ranging from commendably attentive to frustratingly indifferent, with patrons frequently facing protracted wait times without sufficient communication. Despite these concerns, the restaurant's idyllic location continues to draw praise from visitors.

Quality rustic Italian cooking in a floral & very decorative greenhouse , a little overpriced There's no doubt that the dining area within this large greenhouse has a great decorative ambiance. At this time of year, the magnolias planted around the entire area are in bloom so it looks very pretty. All the staff are charming and well recruited. The food is similar to the River Cafe with prices to match. Fantastic bright green watercress soup was £12-50 Haye roast chicken with veg puree £28 ( good but a little overpriced) Crab starter £16-50 overall, a positive experience

Started off with the car park being full and no where in the local vicinity to park so we had to wait for someone to leave, blocking the road. Went down a narrow drive and cars squashed in. The road was unmade so muddy and lots of puddles. If you have booked in the restaurant you should surely have a space reserved! Arrived at the entrance of the nursery, no sign indicating where the restaurant was located, no signs to say one way entrance so we were shouted at by a member of staff for going the wrong way. Greeted pleasantly at the entrance though, they said oh it's someone's birthday we replied 'yes' but that was it, the birthday girl was not made to feel special. Shown to a little table with wooden, uncomfortable chairs which did not sit firm because of the awful terracotta sandy ground. Our bags and coats were not taken from us so we had to be put on the back of our chairs, hoping they would not fall onto the floor. Waiting a little time before being served. Ordered a jug of Elderflower which was delivered to the table in an abrupt way, with no eye contact. We said thank you but the waiter did not acknowledge us. We had the 2 course set menu, limited choice. Considering the price £45 per person the portion sizes were not substantial and the lamb dish was not overly flavorsome. Using the ladies room involved going out of the restaurant, dodging the rain, the mud and puddles again. Returning to the restaurant feeling wet, cold and uncomfortable. It was busy and very noisy with young babies, during our meal the babies were crying which I know can't be helped but it was not exactly a pleasant, relaxing dining experience. Venue- conservatory although August it was on the chilly side, it had lots of open sides. We asked for the bill, there was a hefty discretionary service charge which I felt was not warranted. I asked the waiter to take the amount without the service charge, when I did so his body language seemed to change making me feel uncomfortable. After the bill was paid he asked me outright in front of other diners you didn't paid for the service what was wrong. I found this very embarrassing and felt I could not be honest with other diners listening in and say that the service and whole experience was not worth paying extra for. If he had not asked I was prepared to pay £8 - 10%. He didn't thank us and we left, the waiter went over immediately to the manageress to show her the bill and both her and the waiter watched us as we walked out, as if we had done something wrong. Google definition ... Discretionary means optional so if you're not happy with the service or think the tip is more than you'd like to pay, you don't have to pay it! The easiest way of avoiding a scene is to hand over your card or cash and inform the waiting staff how much you are paying. So it just leaves me to say that this was a unpleasant and not a memorable experience for my daughters 30th birthday.

My friend and I had our special birthday dinner there. We loved the surroundings and accepted the semi- apology of the manager that there wasn't enough light to see our food by the time the main course came. We also enjoyed the showcasing of fresh and beautifully cooked / appropriately raw ( with the bagna cauda) vegetables. Squid, sweetbreads and brill all cooked to perfection. We did find the service a bit erratic. We were informed by one member of staff that she would be our waitress but several others came to the table and served us. We had to ask for bread three times before it was brought - too late to mop up the lovely juices of the first course. No other carbohydrates were on offer in our dishes - a bit unbalanced? I sat for 20 minutes with an empty wine glass which nobody noticed. For these prices, ( We paid just shy of £200 for two people and three courses with wine) I think these small imperfections could be addressed. We still had a lovely time.

Birthday dinner (in late Sept) for two on a Saturday night was a really decent experience. Beautiful setting, and as requested we were seated a few tables away from the bulk of diners by an open window. Very attentive team, all masked and very accommodating and patient. You're paying for enchanting surroundings so don't be surprised by the prices! Risotto was v tasty. Dessert came with candle and a song - perfect!

The service here is one of the worst if not the worst I’ve ever experienced in London. We were lured by the beautiful setting and the promise of an idyllic afternoon tea in the sun but left with the incredulity as to why we just paid £45 each to come here. We booked in advance but had to wait (standing among a non-COVID friendly crowd) for more than 30 minutes to be seated. There was no separate line or reception for those who booked. No one was there to point us in the right direction. When I finally found someone to ask if we need to queue as well, I was told our table wasn’t ready yet. The staff who was supposed to take us completely ignored us and treated us like some children begging for candy. Never came back to us in the end. There were at least 5 other groups who haven’t booked who were seated while we waited. We had to corner another staff in the end to finally let us sit. They offered us some proseco as an apology, which we thought was nice and was the end of that. But no. We had to wait another 45 minutes until our tea and cakes came. I then asked for sugar and a teaspoon at least 5 times to 5 different staff. The spoon never came, not until we finished our cakes (which it should have been there in the first place! We’re having afternoon tea for god’s sake), We ended up stirring our tea with the end of our knives. Among the 8 things we ate, we only liked one. There was a dish that was essentially a mini tart cup filled with mashed peas the size of a coin ... I wouldn’t have complained so much if this wasn’t £45. With that money we’re really better off going to a nice hotel in central London for tea. The setting was never good enough to make up for everything else. Tbh, I don’t think it was the direct mistake of the staff but because of how busy and how disorganised everything was. This place really need to rethink how it’s run.

I really just don’t get the hype about this place. First of all parking is a nightmare - a muddy lane full of potholes and puddles. We ate in the cafe. I sent my first gnocchi back as it was like molten lava on top and cold in the middle. Second one exactly the same. They really should take this dish off the menu as they clearly don’t have the ability to serve it properly. Their chocolate brownie was stale, dry and tasteless. The restaurant manager explained that this was because it was organic chocolate from Ghana and had courgette in it. They might want to change the recipe. Soup was good and the carrot cake acceptable. Staff were very nice but they have underlying issues with the kitchen that the waiting staff can’t fix. Products in the adjoining shop were eclectic and interesting but eye-wateringly expensive. All in all left with a feeling “was that it?”

There's plenty of rustic charm and being surrounded by fresh and colourful flowers in a glasshouse-esque space it's hard not to fall in love with this place. That said, the actual food and tea served for afternoon tea was just terribly disappointing. I don't mind that nothing 'traditional' was served (not a seafood, cucumber or chicken sandwich in sight) but if you're going to buck tradition, I sure expect an impeccable balance of alternative flavors. Sadly everything was either unappetising, oily or both. Will come back to give simple tea and cake a try, but afternoon tea? No thank you, will certainly pass.

We came for my daughters birthday today , The place is magical, like a secret garden, very earthy and pretty, I really loved the set up. However we were all very disappointed ... the food is tasteless, unseasoned, the menu is limited in choices and pretentious as dishes delivered do not match the expectations nor the prices. I found it expensive. On a positive note, the rose petal Prosecco and the bread were top notch. Today was a trial for my birthday in March but we will not be celebrating it at PN , maybe we will come back in the summer for tea, coffee and cake . Shame , I was so looking forward to eating there today 🙁

I unexpectedly found myself staying in Richmond when my travel plans suddenly changed due to CV19 so I was chuffed that I managed to get a reservation at Petersham as it would normally be too far away to justify the trip just for a meal. Firstly, to clarify comments re: social distancing. The tables were comfortably apart from each other and every member staff was wearing masks (not that they have to). We felt very comfortable with the measures put in place - I am really surprised to read reviews to the contrary. Secondly, the service was as you would expect for such a restaurant. Other than the delicious strawberry Bellini taking a little longer to reach my table than I would like (but due to everyone ordering one at the same time), and a bit of a wait to be seated, I had no complaints. Our waitress was lovely (hard when wearing a mask) and everything arrived in a timely fashion. I ordered a glass of wine for my main and it was timed perfectly. Thirdly, the food was very tasty and beautifully presented. I had high expectations and love Italian food so I was always going to be a harsh critic. The burrata starter was delicious and creamy yet fresh with the tomatoes, and my husband’s tagliatelle was sublime. He was still talking about it three days later! For my main, the lamb was cooked perfectly - I could have cut it with a butter knife - and the crumb was very tasty with the green beans. The chicken was moist, the pesto well flavoured and although my husband isn’t always a courgette fan, he ate all of them. We didn’t fancy dessert so I’m unable to comment on them. My only issues are more aesthetic ones. I know it is a greenhouse and is meant to be rustic but I do think that the glass should be cleaned and spiderwebs swept away. Also, it had been raining a couple of days prior but we were blessed with lovely sunshine meaning lots of ladies were in sandals. The dirt floor is clearly meant to be part of the charm but there were lots of pools of water and mud as you walked into the restaurant. Surely some matting would be a considerate gesture to guests. But my advice is to layer up and wear closed toe shoes!

Went for a walk alongside the river socially distancing of course. Friends suggested we visit the Nurseries for a bit to eat. Sat down and waited. Ordered a light lunch. I love sour dough with pâté and waited The sour dough pâté arrived but the sour dough was as if it had been left out for a week. Unable to eat it I tried to cut it but failed miserably. Mentioned this to the waitress who brought me two similar pieces that would have been suitable for a dry stone wall Ordered cake and coffee After waiting for over 40 minutes we mentioned this to a waitress who apologised and brought it to us. Some of the waiters and waitresses face masks were totally inadequate. A very poor experience. Will not be returning and neither should anyone else !

So much to be positive about this gem in terms of lovely staff and gorgeous surroundings but the eye watering cost of the food and poor value for money would put us off going back. So £65 for three courses. On top of this there was no bread served and water came at tap temperature with no ice, lemon or mint served in awful looking carafes. Potatoes are an added extra at £6 for four potatoes and no other choice of hot vegetables to go with the food just a sad looking fennel salad. My husband’s lamb although generous in portion size was surrounded in fat that was not rendered down properly. My meringue served with strawberries was so hard it was impossible to put a spoon through without difficulty. I mentioned this to the waitress who did say she would pass this comment on to the chef. I hope she did. All the other food was faultless but we have all eaten food equal to or better in much more modest places in and out of London at more reasonable prices!!

We ordered the Restokit food box too: wish I'd read the reviews here first and saved the £140. If it has been £40 in a restaurant I would have sent it back. As another reviewer experienced, one of the containers was not sealed so had leaked so over everything. Also there was no cheese so no cheese course. We did get a £20 refund for this. But that doesn't make up for the dessert: creme caramel that could have come from any supermarket; the marsala-soaked sultanas to go with it were ok but the shortbread was thin and greasy: we threw it away. The main: lamb and lamb. That was ok but there was no way to make braised lamb look particularly pleasing and the fried lamb was just ok. The sides: gritty salad with no dressing as that was all over the packaging, together with a butter bean dish. Butter beans are fabulous, smooth and velvety. But these were CRUNCHY and therefore inedible. The risotto WAS delicious. If I'd just had that we've ordered mains and dessert from somewhere else we would have been happy. As it was I feel I tried to order something really special and got scammed. Has this been in a restaurant we would have sent it back and refused to pay for anything except the risotto. As it was we got £20 and an email thanking us for our feedback, saying it would be given to the relevant staff. We will not be recommending Restokit or Petersham Nurseries and will certainly never use either again.

I'm not one to leave a review but due to the treatment of customer service I felt I had to. (We are frequent visitors of Petersham Nurseries, however this will be our last). We paid £45 each for afternoon tea and we did not get enough food, to the point I questioned whether the food was actually £45 for 2 people. Our tea went cold and there was no offer of a refill, and when we paid the bill the final course wasnt served to us, to the point that the waitress ran after us as we were heading out to leave the nurseries. Just wanted to add we paid for service charge, for what? When I raised this with customer service asking for a goodwill gesture for the awful experience, I was told I was "just going back and forth" in my emails. No offer to rectify the situation, a real shambles. Such a shame because this was one of my favourite places in the past. I have cancelled my future reservations.

Lovely setting with a beautiful laid back aesthetic of mismatched chairs and tables in an old greenhouse - amazing flower arrangements too. The food unfortunately was very disappointing with regards to value for money - our choices were very tasty but nothing which I haven’t cooked at home and far too overpriced. I was expecting something more wow. They were exceedingly busy yesterday and the service was slow - at one point I actually thought they’d forgotten about us. I wasn’t particularly happy at the end to see a 12.5% ‘discretionary’ service charge added to my bill which didn’t feel very discretionary as it was included in the grand total After all the hype I was expecting something wonderful but I went home feeling underwhelmed, disappointed and let down. I can’t imagine going back anytime soon.

The fusili pasta dish with a few peas and a few 5mm cubes of pancetta was quite small at around £13-£14, Served warm on a cold plate , A child's portion that must have cost 50p to make. The sort of dish that would be made if on a very very tight budget. The Chicken Puttanesca, quite a good sauce, tiniest ever chicken leg served warm on a cold plate around £15 Scones and clotted cream, and jam were very good. Left disappointed.
