Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Nice cosy pub with a big garden (for the summer). Good choice of Mains, Light Lunches and Specials. Three different meals were all good quality and tasty and the service was first class. The only downside is the added service charge which, of course, is...optional but how many people knock it off? Overall, good and will return.More

We enjoyed a lovely Sunday lunch here yesterday. They managed to squeeze us in last minute (table of 9!). Food was amazing and so was the service. A lovely "home feel" pub, we will definitely be returning.

This is pub food with a difference. For the main courses we opted for standards - a burger and lasagne. Both were good quality with their own individual twists which included much appreciated generous bacon and cheese on the burger and a comparatively pasta light...and meat oriented version of beef lasagne. Thoroughly enjoyed. The starters generated a little bit of choice envy when the seared king prawns dish scored the major wow factor. Interestingly the tempura prawns with a very light batter were a close competitor. Both dishes were shared so nobody missed out on any of it. While this is a solid pub menu with a lot of choice we particularly appreciated the culinary fusion of creations and flavours. Relaxed atmosphere and welcoming service throughout. A dining experience that could definitely be repeated often to relish favourites as well as sampling new dishes. Compliments on the whole package which is out of the ordinary in good ways. We'll be back.More

We went to this pub yesterday for Sunday lunch and we were very impressed. It’s a really nice cosy pub and the staff were all so polite and helpful. We both ordered a starter of chicken liver pate followed by beef with all the usual...veg and Yorkshire puddings. In all honesty, next time we will order one portion of pate to share because it came with far more toasty bread than you usually get and we ended up asking to take quite a lot of the pate home with us. The pate was to die for, as was the excellent chutney. It was served with rocket and other leaves which were crisp, fresh and delicious. The main course wasn’t far behind and it was piping hot. The beef was so tender and tasty and the vegetables were cooked to perfection. The gravy which was plentiful tasted incredible. It’s our first time and certainly won’t be the last that’s for sure.More

Upon arrival, drinks were promptly ordered and brought to the table, by a kind and lovely waitress, Daisy. Food was then ordered and again brought to the table in excellent timings, despite how busy it was and was all perfect. Lovely little pub in a...lovely little village. Would definitely recommend and come againMore

Excellent christmas lunch at the Black Horse Swainby. My family really enjoyed the experience. Food was very good, service brilliant and the staff pleasant and courteous. Special call out for Carlos who was very helpful when taking our booking earlier in the year and on...the day made the event special especially for my two grandsons.More

I booked this venue via email, as a motorhome stop over en-route to Scotland. I requested a table for two. I received a positive reply within minutes. On arrival, we were given a very warm welcome. The venue was spotlessly clean, log fires burning and...the food was exceptional and very reasonably priced. The staff were very efficient, polite and helpful. The village itself is lovely too. We will definitely be returning here on our trips to the North East.More

There were 33 of us in our party and we were all served delicious, piping hot food at the same time! It's not often that you get great food and great service nowadays and it was very much appreciated.

As a group of friends, we booked here for dinner whilst staying in the area. We were met by a very enthusiastic and friendly member of staff who showed us to our table and, when we were ready, took our order. The lighting was, to...say the least, very subdued and may have posed an issue to anyone with a visual impairment (e.g. cataracts). It may have been taking "atmosphere" a little to far! The food arrived in a reasonable time and was tasty and plentiful (you are unlikely to leave there hungry!). There is an "optional" 10% service charge, something of which I do not approve and would put me off from returning as it puts the customer in an embarrassing position if they do not wish to pay it. Happy to leave a tip (and would have done in this case) but the onus should not be put on the customer to opt out.More

All the food was homemade ans tasted great. There was a variety of food to try including some things that were different to the classics. The seafood pancakes were lovely and would recommend these. A classic country pub and it was great to sit near...the log fire.More

Whilst the food was reasonably good we booked the venue to experience their signature dish which is advertised on their we website as steak stone cooked at your table. This apparently has not been on offer for months. . . . Could of had a...plate served steak anywhere. Not withstanding this the ambience was destroyed by the sound of work being carried out in restaurant (7.30 pm) and the bar was awash with dirty glasses. Would not recommend or anticipate returning MFTMore
