Myself and my family have been coming to The Black Horse for years for Sunday lunch and we have always loved the dinners especially the quality of meat, Yorkshire puddings, roasties and gravy. We were looking forward to visiting after months of lockdown and were totally dissapointed. I am guessing that there is a new chef/management because the dinner was totally different. The beef was chewy and there was 3 small slices of it, Yorkshire puddings were flat and we got 6 small roasties between two people, which were nowhere near as nice as what previously used to be served. Luckily we had ordered mash separately, however I also don’t believe you should be charged for this considering how the portions and quality of the meat and roasties have been drastically reduced. It’s a real shame but I won’t be travelling in future to come back as the Sunday lunch was very average.

Just had dinner with the family. What a great place. Food good and ambiance fantastic. We has the Monday Night special £15 for two pies, chips peas and gravy and our son had homemade beef burger.

Came to The Black Horse for lunch and was immediately greeted by friendly staff who attended to our every need. The service was quick and seamless, even though we chose to sit in their lovely beer garden (which is beautifully spaced out with amazing views), the full experience was topped off with their delicious, well priced, food. The brilliant service given to us by George was phenomenal and really heightened our experience at the cosy, country pub.

Disappointing. We went out for a meal today. We have been several times and it has been good. Unfortunately today we waited over an hour for food and when it came it was cold, undercooked and just generally not hitting the standard we usually get when we eat here. From us sitting down to us paying the bill took over two hours.

First time eating here and the last. Came here with family Walked in and was greeted with women bhind bar shouting you can’t stand here u can’t walk there hold that door to stop the kid coming in your stood on the wrong side of the bar. Was no signs telling u any thing about the rules set in place of were you can’t stand. I placed my order witch was a full Parmo and 3 way chicken. The only thing a could see that was 3 way was 3 different people handled the plate as was finger marks on my chips. The chicken was like eating shredded wheat with out milk. The Parmo came what was meant to be a full was like a fifty pence peace with more cheese then the laughing cows ear rings. If it wasn’t eat out to help out I would of went home and coursed a argument. Will not be going back

Lovely lunch here with the pub sitting near a stream and a very well maintained beer garden and children’s playing field. Food was very tasty and fresh. Highly recommend the black pudding scotch egg as a starter. I’m not a veggie but do like to dabble. The vegetarian Wellington did not disappoint. 2 x starters, mains and 4 drinks should have been £52 but only paid £32 on the eat out offer in August. However would have been happy to pay full price so will be returning again and again.

Visited today for a business meal. The pork parmo was very tough, and the waiter service left alot to be desired. Staff had to be asked for the basics, cutlery and condiments. The meal was replaced but sadly we won't be visiting again. When you visit somewhere in a lovely place like Swainby you expect better.

I cannot fault any aspect of our recent visit to The Black Horse. At 5 minutes notice, on a very busy Sunday lunch time, our party was seated with menus. Drinks orders were taken promptly, soon followed by food order. The staff are very friendly and efficient. Nothing is too much trouble. The food was amazing, tasty and plentiful, at a very reasonable cost. I would not hesitate to visit again and certainly recommend the establishment to others.

well what can I say, hugely disappointed.usually visit a few times a year. This will be the last. We had table for 11 at 6.30 arrived 6.20 taken straight to table, drinks and food order taken 6.35 starters arrived 7.55 and then after complaining twice 8.45 and 9.05 decided to leave . I told member of staff that we where leaving with out paying the bill due to lack of service and food.normal I don't mind waiting but with 5 kids 3,6,7,8 & 9 And no sign of main meals decided we needed to leave. No apoligies nothing Table opposite complained too and where told to just leave no bill. The table behind us where about to leave after nearly 2 hour wait.when food arrived think they left without paying too. The owner I think needs to choose Another career path as the management tonight was the worse I have ever seen. I have never left a restaurant no matter how bad. I would have left no stars but you have to leave 1 I won't normal make any comments But this is the worse meal or lack of it in my life. I know they where busy but just an apology would have made things easier. And don't forget you have to book So the owner new how many people where planning on dinning. 20 years of eating at this restaurant and tonight was the last RIP black horse as I will not be returning

Visited the black horse for some lunch while visiting the area. The staff were friendly and helpful and showed a good service throughout our meal. The food was home cooked and really tasty, will call again next time we're in the area.

First impressions were how warm, cosy and inviting the pub is. As we came in there was an open fire crackling, warming the room. The menu is great, fabulous choice of Sunday meals and good veggie options. We ordered the pie of the day (steak), some roasts and the veggie Wellington. Food arrived hot and was delicious!! Puddings were great as well, highly recommend the jam roly poly!! This pub is child and dog friendly! We particularly enjoyed the efforts made in decorating the pub for Halloween! My 4 year old niece loved this, it kept her entertained! The servers were really friendly, nothing was too much trouble. They checked in to make sure everything was ok. We felt really looked after. My only slight constructive feedback would be that on a couple of occasions we tried to get someone’s attention to order more drinks / ask for more gravy and we found it was difficult to catch someone’s eye. Servers were stood at the end of the bar deep in conversation with their backs to us. Minor point but felt it was worth mentioning. Highly recommend visiting this pub, what a gem!!

Called in on the off chance after a stroll around Redcar. A warm welcome awaited us in this traditional village pub. The menu was right up my street! I had a hard time deciding on what to eat, I was intrigued by the black pudding scotch egg starter but fancied the moules marinieire, I can't eat 2 courses normally, fantastic they offered a small portion of the mussels so I ordered, my husband had French onion soup, rich and flavoursome, and steak pie, huge chunks of steak in shortcrust pastry lashings of gravy too! My scotch egg was perfection, runny, tasty and enrobed in a delicious sausage and black pudding jacket, the mussels arrived with frites and toasted crispy bread, they were some of the best I've eaten, the liqueur was rich, garlicky, creamy and totally delicious! Sadly we couldn't manage a pud but would have loved to try the jam roly poly maybe next time! The service was excellent the waiter who seated us and the charming young lady who attended our table and the bar man who welcomed us, this place is a gem, I have only remembered one meal I've eaten in a restaurant many years ago and now I have 2 don't pass this delightful place by without stopping to eat its absolutely amazing 10 stars awarded!

Fantastic experience. A group of 25 of us attended here for a family birthday meal and we haven't got one bad thing to say about it. The food was exceptional and the staff couldn't have been more helpful and attentive if they tried. Extremely polite and efficient. We didn't have to wait long for our food considering the size of the group. By far the best meal we have had in a long time as a family. We would highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely be returning.

We called at late notice on the off chance we could have a table. Although very busy due to the ‘eat out to help out’ initiative, they managed to happily squeeze us in. There were in my opinion (as a businesswoman) too many staff on and some were chatting socially instead of using their time more efficiently to drum up sales for the owners. (Lets face it we all need staff who can help make a business sustainable otherwise they won’t have a job at the end of the day...) On to the food and drink; we both had a petite Parmo and a pint and were both in agreement that this was a perfect Parmo. Succulent chicken, well seasoned béchamel sauce and just the right amount of tasty cheddar cheese served with fresh crispy chips and garlic mayonnaise. Well done The Black Horse for getting it right, we will be dining with you again some time very soon 👌

Shocking ! Booked for birthday meal 10 people. Arrived to be told we were in the restaurant….wow is that what you call restaurant area? All crap shoved in there and even wooden pallet and freezing , like we were shoved out the way . Asked twice for. Heating to be turned on and finally was for half hour . No bottles of cider or on taps but by recent reviews seems like a big problem. Maybe not paid suppliers. Sunday dinners £15 for pre bought sliced meats , even waitress couldn’t tell difference between the pork and turkey . £4 for cauliflower cheese which was inedible as was rock hard like most of the veg . Wish we had stuck to the black smiths just up the road . Will never return and don’t think will be there much longer anyway. Such a shame as was always fantastic food in the past.
