Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What has happened to the Priory. I chose it last Thursday to go for a celebration with family and friends. The service was absolutely shocking. Having had to wait for our starters, there was no apology. The steak (my main course) came but after 10...minutes still no chips. I told a number of serving staff that I was waiting for chips but nothing came. After another few minutes I asked to see the manager. The restaurant manger proceeded to have a full blown argument with me in front of the whole restaurant, indicating that I had not been waiting 10 minutes, missing the point that the steak and the chips should’ve come at the same time. It was only when I suggested to her that it was poor customer service to argue in front of other customers did she stop. She brought the chips (undercooked) and then I had to ask her to deal with the steak that was cold. She took it back but it meant that I was not eating with the others in my party. It really spoilt the meal and we ate our main courses and left having settled a bill of £350. I rang the hotel to ask the name of the manager only to have a difficult conversation with whoever picked up the phone. I had hoped to settle this matter without having to write a poor review, but I was left no option after the dreadful customer care. The food was no more than okay. It is overpriced for what is offered. I shall not go back. As I logged on to write this review. I have noticed that I am not the only person to complain about poor customer care. It seems that it is falling on deaf ears.More

We have been to The Priory many time over the last 40 year but todays experience was very disappointing. Having waited 30 minutes I was served cold soup which was sent back. After waiting a further 30 minutes the main course had not arrived, we...had been there for 1 hour and 20 minutes. Fed up with the poor service we asked for the bill giving up on the main course. The next table which arrived after us had already finished their main course. We did get an apology but we are unlikely to return or recommend it to anyone else.More

Our first visit to the Priory since under new ownership. On arrival we had to look for a member of staff to show us to our table who eventually did so. Menus handed out an drinks ordered taken unfortunately when drinks arrived the waiter managed...to spill a full glass of wine all over the table and my mother not a great start although I appreciate accidents happen but not much of an apolgy and four glasses of prosseco when only one person drinking did not really help. We ordered our food which arrived at the table promptly unfortunately my rack of lamb was cold along with the peas and sauce the plate was not warm either. I spoke to the manageress who offered me another dish which I declined. Whilst I appreciated the offer I did not want to wait for another dish to be prepared whilst everyone else ate theres. Not once we we asked if we wanted more drinks or checked on until everyone had finished only then were we asked if we wanted dessert. I appreciate they Knocked my meal of the bill along with the glass of wine but all I wanted was a nice meal with good service not money off. I hope things improve as its all ways been a great meal out.More

As a regular since The Priory opened I thought I knew what to expect. Today's atrocious service was bewildering and £40 for a piece of steak stunning. Stick to set Sunday lunch.

Having visited several times before we were very much looking forward to spending Mother’s Day at The Priory. However, I will definitely not be returning for Sunday lunch after today’s experience. The pork was bland, the cracking was chewy and inedible, the vegetables and roasties...were rock hard. The roasties were so hard that I was unable to cut through them with my cutlery. Gravy was really thin and bland. Really disappointed, such a waste of money.More

Thank you to everyone at The Priory Hotel & Restaurant for such a lovely evening on Saturday night. My niece had a wonderful 18th birthday get together, a dinner for 17 and then drinks for 35+ in the bar. The food was really well done,...beautifully cooked and delivered. Everything was so well organised. A special thank you to Ben and Louis and all the team for their kindness and attention to detail, the service was great. We couldn't believe it when we saw the boardroom, we had it decorated with balloons and lights, it looked really lovely. This weekend meant a lot to my family and we felt like the team worked hard to make the night special. We also stayed at the hotel, and we were really well looked after. The rooms were lovely and we loved having breakfast together. Everything was perfect! My family are trying to get us to hold a family wedding party there next year and to book out over christmas...I think the Priory is our new 'go to'. Thank you!More

We stayed at the hotel, which was wonderful. However, the dinner we had was absolutely atrocious (and I don't like giving negative reviews as it harms a business). However, our meal was an absolute fortune and all of it was awful. The scotch egg started...tasted like it was off (yet they still charged for it). We chose beautiful meats to be cooked (one steak and one rack of lamb). They managed to absolutely ruin both cuts of meat and they were both served with hideous vegetables. It was as though someone had watched Masterchef and decided to try to do as many things as they could. All the vegetables were ruined with flavours/sauces that clashed with everything else. We spoke to one of the staff who apologised and said we must try a dessert so that they could redeem themselves. That was awful as well! It just tasted of overused cooking oil. Such a shame as it's a wonderful looking place.More

Wow, how the mighty have fallen. I’ve eaten at this restaurant for somewhere between 15-20 years on and off. Its obviously changed hands as can be seen in the front of house. As someone who has done this job and run restaurants and bars I...can’t believe how much catching up they need to do. First if you take bookings on Christmas Eve at 7.30 don’t make a couple paying the best past of £200 for a meal feel like it’s all rushed, and then get basic things WRONG. We had our wedding reception there in January and the difference on service is unbelievable. It started from the moment we walked in and lack of organisation at bar service, to 3 member of staff barging past and ignoring us while waiting for someone to take us to a table. Food order wrong and little info on the wine list or familiarity with the wine. Technical aspects of food poor especially as much of the stuff not available, like I said, if you don’t want to open late on Christmas Eve then don’t and don’t make people feel like they are being rushed and mess up the food. Then have staff patrolling around the tables making you feel uncomfortable. Further control the dining space and don’t let random people in to do an impromptu photo shoot while people are trying to have a nice meal. Very, very disappointing, if this was my first visit I’d never return, as it is I’ll keep an eye on it but I’m dubious. There are so Many things In need of correction or you’re going to be in trouble.More

This is our favourite place to stay as the ambience is second to none. The staff are excellent. As for the food the pork scratching starter from a packet is a joke and £29 for the rack of lamb where it is only 2 pieces...of lamb is very disappointing and grossly overpriced. My wife is not a big eater but even she expected a lot more. The fresh fish is superb and reasonably priced. Unfortunately a £26 service charge for a very average meal for two people is ridiculous. The food needs to improve to keep up with the wonderful ambience and character of the building. There are better places to eat but this is still a wonderful place to experience !More

I am only writing this review now as since our experience I have been quite upset with how the owner Benito Martinez treated us, it was a busy Saturday sunny afternoon but how he spoke to me for just asking are they still doing waiter...service outside as we had been trying to get a drink for over half an hour was disgusting especially as we have been customers for over 25 years he said he didnt recognise us he was just so rude, if his dad was still with us and Miguel they certainly would have put him straight, sadly that afternoon Phillipe the manager was not working and it clearly showed, the younger staff were running around like headless chickens and we heard the owner speaking to them in a way I wouldn't want anyone to treat my child. The food and service was very poor definitely standards have gone down hill rapidly and the prices have increased dramatically on the wine and to top it all they added a service charge to the highly priced bill. It now transpires that the manager Phillipe has left and we totally understand why as I am very sorry to say if Benito treats his customers this way only knows how the staff are treated. We wish Phillipe the best in his new path and we have not returned to the priory since and I can also speak for alot more people who live in the area feel the same way. Benito your restaurant is failing you need to ask yourself why thats the only advice I could give to you and drop your attitude.More
