This is a restaurant the reeks of history — good and bad. The good, a warm and giving host, extras like a taste of pappa al pomodoro and free sweets and vin santo. The less good, the place has a dank, slightly moldly smell — it is in a basement level after all; the wine we ordered was replaced with... More

We had lunch here after a hectic morning at the antique market. We stumbled across this place and it looked warm and inviting. We were very warmly welcomed by the staff. The restaurant was packed with the lunch crowd, both local and out of towers but they comfortably squeezed us in. The food was great and the atmosphere warm. I... More

We almost missed closing time due to difficulty finding parking. I'm so glad we made it. A beautiful and friendly waitress helped us with the Italian menu and encouraged my gluten free wife and I towards choosing local cuisine. The food was great and the atmosphere was too.

When you find yourself in Arezzo, try and find your way to this quaint restaurant right beside the church of San Francesco. You will be led to your seat in this cellar-like environment by the most charming man you will ever meet - Mario. My wife and I feel like we entered his home and after the meal, you will... More

Our party of four received perfect attention and exemplary Tuscan food after visiting the San Francesco. I strongly recommend the degustation menu. For €15 I was served a bean and tomato appetizer, a ragu on tagliatelle, a roasted pork dish, a fruit tart and Vino santo. In the running for our best meal in Italy. Would be worried about quality... We stumbled upon this place on a day trip to Arezzo. Our meal was truly excellent and an example of 'Tuscany on a plate'. My wife and I each had different set menus which were given to us in half portions so that we effectively tried 6 dishes. Actually we started with an 'amuse bouche' of panzanella which is made... I can't fathom why some reviewers have rated this place poorly. We just had dinner there and it was a warm, welcoming, environment and delicious food. I loved it so much I took a picture with the two men who served us--I assume they are the owners. I had the fixed-price "typical regional" cuisine menu and loved every bit. My... More

I understand the reviews of Buca are very uneven. However, this meal was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. The owner and waiters could not have been more helpful or accommodating. The food was delicious and was definitely typical of the area. For appetizer, we were served a local salami, truffles on toast, spicy tomato jam on toast,... More

A friend who used to live in Arezzo recommended Buca di San Francesco as “the place” to have a great Tuscan dinner, and boy was she right. Mario treated us like family, and described in great detail each of the varieties of local foods he served us. We enjoyed him as much as we enjoyed the dinner. The restaurant itself... More

This used to be a treat for us after walking through the Antique Fair all morning on the first week-end of the month but it seems to have gone downhill since then and become more of a tourist trap for the unsuspecting visitors from the popular church next door. Maybe they appreciate the rather overdone "medieval" atmosphere which is very... More
