A tiny door down tiny stairs is the gateway to an unforgettable experience. From moment the owner opens the door with a wonderful smile, everything is amazing: the food, the wine, the desserts, the timeless paintings on the walls and specially the flamboyant personality of the owner. What a great character, so joyful and generous. We will never forget this... More

We visited this restaurant for lunch a few weeks back and the experience couldn’t have been more disappointing. Yes, the restaurant has a unique decor and the owner/waiter is (initially) quirky and charming, but this is where the positives stop. The food is well below average, as is the overall experience. After deciding and ordering our lunch, the owner/waiter strongly... More

We came to Buca di San Francesco in search of a Buon Ricordo plate, so glad we did! Hidden on the sloping street next to its name sake church, it lies on the level of the original city street, and is decorated with colorful frescoes. Huge variety of dishes (the mushroom and chestnut raviolis I had were to die for!)... More

We very much enjoyed our lunch at this restaurant. Yes, Mario does make suggestions, yes, he does talk and joke, yes, the interior is an amazing mixture of frescoes, old books and bric-a-brac, but we had a truly unique experience. The plate of typical Tuscan food (mainly offal) was tasty and better than expected, a simple chicken salad was delicious.... More

I rarely write bad reviews but felt I had to on this occasion. Other reviews of this restaurant seem quite good and that makes me feel even more let down by the extremely poor lunch that was provided. It was the big jousting festival in Arezzo that day so lots of activity and tourists I suppose. Our group may have... More

Restaurant with nice decoration and a staff truly welcoming. Do not excepted reinvented food, but if you want to taste a real family toscan food, you are at the right place.

We found this restaurant by chance rambling through Arezzo and we were delighted. The inside is like Aladdin's cave with every sort of momento and curiosity, the food was inventive and the owners great fun and kept joking and plying us with desert wine! A lovely evening.

Entering La Buca di San Francesco I was astounded to find a beautifully decorated old-style restaurant in cellars under the old town of Arezzo. It was a real wow moment and I felt boded very well for the lunch that was to come. How wrong I was. I was the lone Italian in a group of English friends who had... More

We were a group of nine persons. We have all lived in Italy for twelve years or more but were mistakenly taken for a group of naive and gullible tourists. We were talked into allowing the restaurant to provide the same meal for us all of what they promised would be a fine repast of all of the best from... More

Some people say good and bad about restaurants. We found out Buca di San Francesco was definitely one of the most pleasant restaurants in Toscana. The food we had was just fantastic, and we really enjoyed the atmosphere of the place. Also, the owner who has a good sense of humor and his staff provided us good service. This place... More
