Visited this legendary brewery of smoked beer. Found seating in the quaint front serving room. Sweet young maid took our paltry order of 2 small beers (for 4 people). We all took polite sips but couldn’t get to enjoy the brew. But we enjoyed the...More

We visited Schlenkerla for the beer. We found a historic place with a great atmosphere, even outside the restaurant on the street. We bought a beer to try the typical smoke taste. Yes and it was very smoky. Unfortunately, it the smoke beer taste is...More

Dear Mr. T, thank you for your comment and rating. We would however like to point out, that we do not brew a "quick made" tourist version of our Smokebeer for anyone. All our Rauchbier is done the same way, and at our brewery tavern...More

We didn't enjoy this very much. Almost all the dishes came with a "kloss" which is a massive dumpling, shiny with fat. The establishment would not take cards for payment which annoys the tourist.More

Dear Mrs. T, thank you for your comment, but we would like to clarify a bit: The "Kloß" is a traditional franconian side dish, and it is boiled in water. There is not fat involved; the shiny effect comes from the moisture of the water....More

I discovered the smoked beer is not for me, but my travel companions loved it. Moreover, this is a must have experience to have in Bamberg.

We spent the day in Bamberg with a local family member who booked a table inside the pub, a good job we did as it was very busy. Tables inside and outside were nearly all full, but the staff we attentive and efficient. I had...More

Went to the restaurant for their smoked beer and was very pleased with the food as well. The service was also very good. The atmosphere is quintessential German pub. Must do in bamberg

Bamberg onion and smoked beer is synonymous with the city. This place does it well, and quickly, in an atmospheric setting. The "onion" is stuffed with finely minced meat, and served with bacon, mashed potato and gravy. The beer has a strong taste of Barbecue...More

I am an avid beer drinker. We went to Schlenkerla because of all those raving reviews about the Rauchbier and Schlenkerla as the Rauchbier heaven. So the beer happened to be nothing special. And the restaurant, its quaint rustic looks notwithstanding, is nothing much either....More

Description
In the middle of the old part of Bamberg, directly beneath the mighty cathedral, one can find the historic smoked beer brewery Schlenkerla. First mentioned in 1405 and now run by the Trum family in the 6th generation, it is the fountain of Original Schlenkerla Smokebeer (in German language it's called "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier"). The smoked beer is here at the brewery tavern still being tapped directly from the wooden barrel according to old tradition. "Even if the brew tastes somewhat strange at the first swallow, do not stop, because soon you will realize that your thirst will not decrease and your pleasure will visibly increase."
