The Ship Hotel Restaurant is often praised for its warm and cozy ambiance, which many guests find inviting, even when the establishment is bustling. However, the service appears to be a hit or miss, with some patrons commending the staff's friendliness and others pointing to slow and neglectful service. Many reviewers feel the food, described as mediocre pub fare, is overpriced and fails to impress in both taste and presentation. Additionally, guests have called out the long wait times for service and questioned the value, criticizing the mismatch between price and quality.

Booked online for a Saturday night meal for six whilst on holiday in brancaster. It took seconds to book online and was confirmed within a few minutes. The atmosphere as always was friendly and welcoming. We all had three courses and all of us had wonderful food. The courses were timed very well to allow time to savour each course without being rushed. I would only say if you order the chocolate pot for desert you need to be very hungry as it's probably a bit too large for such a rich desert. All in all a lovely family meal would highly recommend.

Six for a birthday Sunday lunch, our first visit since the pub was refurbished. High expectations were confirmed as we entered and saw the lovely lounge area, plenty of seating and dog friendly too. Only one real ale available, poor choice for a Sunday session. Round table suited us perfectly, staff attentive without being pushy. Orders taken, we enjoyed our drinks and lively chat. The dining area is immense with nooks and crannies hither and thither. The wall lights are unique, each being a different piece of driftwood. The first two meals came out, then we waited..... about three minutes later the next two came out, then we waited..... the last two came out about three minutes later. Is it too hard to plate up six meals together, and have two/three staff deliver them pronto? On a positive note the plates were piping hot, good for slower eaters keeping the food warm. Again having said that the food was not awfully hot to start with, surely everyone has heat lamps whilst plating before service? The Burger was only warm, the Roast Beef slightly bland, the Nut Roast was devine, the 'best I ever tasted', which was great as some veggie meals are awful. The wrong ice cream was served with the crumble, no ginger ice-cream was available with the cheesecake, so three of us were disappointed. Coffees were good. In fact now that this is written the score has been reduced from 4 to 3 to reflect a longer list of caveats that a 4 deserves. Thank you The Ship, just sharpen up your act a little!

Went for lunch on Weds for my birthday. Good Covid measures inc. hand sanitisers and app based ordering system. Staff very friendly and speedy service. Food was nice, but portions small. We ordered a main each and some chips to share, but could have done with another side dish at least. We used the gov Eat Out To Help Out discount so was still good value for what we paid, but would hope they serve proper pub portions once the government stops helping them out!

Decided to re-visit this public house for lunch. Such a shame to think that just a few years ago this was run by a certain kiwi chef and the quality was fantastic. Now there is a limited lunchtime menu and what was served was very basic to say the least. Add to that a bar area that needs redecoration to replace worn seat covers and water stained ceilings as well as a surly ‘waitress’ and you come to the conclusion that you really should just drive by and find somewhere that cares a little more about the experience it wants to offer.

Called in on New Years Day for a drink and light lunch, very busy but we managed to get a table in the bar area. No sandwiches available so I ordered the chicken liver parfait, order came very quickly and looked very attractive. Nice portion of parfait with salad and figs but what a disappointment one tiny piece of toast.....come on at nearly £8 how hard would have been to provide at least two or three tiny pieces of toast! Very disappointed will not be going back in the near future.

Dear Daws1952 Thank you for your review. I am sorry that you were disappointed with the seemingly meagre melba toast offering, i am sure on of the team would have got you more from the kitchen. I do hope you give us another go should you be in the area. Kind Regards Matthew Jones General Manager

We stayed here last year. Very good experience and extensive menu. Not the case this year. Stayed in the Captain’s room v good and clean and staff attentive. However, ridiculously complex online ordering system. Have to input card details every time you pay with no option of PayPal single payment. Staff cannot serve you directly with food or drinks. No atmosphere and poor service experience. Menu, very poor choice for such prices and very average quality. Only choice of six main courses burger and chips, scampi and chips both £16! , or a steak for £27. Etc no fresh fish, lamb pork etc. Did not realise how limited the menu was until we had too much to drink to drive somewhere else. Cancelled dinner for subsequent evening went to the Orange Tree in Thornham much better experience and a burger and chips there is worth £16.

Always visited this restaurant when in the are but never again. It used to be very good. The only restaurant we have visited in the area over the last week that was not really interested in customers. Rude and full of own importance senior staff. Not flexible, not helpful. You use the QR system to order and pay by credit card upfront before you see your meal. Think this is discussing when you are spending £75 for a meal for two. What if the meal is poor.................what happens then? In our case we never got that far, we entered our credit card info and the waitress said we needed an authorisation from the bank, she fetched a senior person who just asked hadn’t the authorisation come through yet, card holder hadn’t got their phone with them and I had not brought my card!! We offered to pay cash and they refused so we walked out. The credit card has been used in every other restaurant this week with no issues and no authorisation needed!! It’s a meal for goodness sake not a large electrical item or holiday. Boris Johnson has been asking us to eat out to help out but with some places it’s impossible..................they are making it impossible.

After ordering and paying for a meal and bottle of wine we wanted to order a plate of cheese to share. We did this by adding on to the mobile QR order. A waitress turned up 5 mins later with another bottle of the same wine which we hadn't ordered. She insisted that we ordered it at precisely 8.15pm. It seems that the basket is not emptied after each order and after you pay, thus if you add one plate afterwards you pay for it all again. They realised we didn't want the 2 main courses again so didn't bring these but thought we might want more wine! This happened to an elderly couple at the table next to us the following evening when the waitress insisted that the man take the pint of beer he hadn't ordered. It took 2 days for the refund to come through. There will be a lot of people out there who have paid twice for a meal or who have accepted extra food/drink they hadn't wanted. Have written to the manager to ask that they get this resolved. Apart from this we had a good stay but when these things happen it colours your visit.

This is a welcoming establishment, Great pub area serving cask beers [ loved the ' ghost Ship'] and when we were there also serving a range of gins pared with fruit or lemon, sloes or even coffee beans! Dogs are so welcome and one can sit down with them in the bar area which leads into the first section of the dining room that has 3 tables for people with dogs or small children. This goes down a corridor to the smart dining area, The atmosphere is great with different people popping in from surrounding farms with their well behaved working dogs. Friendly helpful FOH team Hanna, Vicky and Seb . Had a memorable Sunday lunch [ 4th time] of roast beef and Yorkshire pud, roast potatoes etc. while our two black labs slept at our feet! But even if one just dropped in for a drink there are delicious light bites produced by the talented head chef Shane Wood.Examples, delicious Sumac fried white whitebait with Harissa Aioli and the Tempura tiger prawns with Japanese dressing were as good as I tasted in Kyoto last year. Very creative...well done!

Firstly, since lockdown I have willingly adhered to every government regulation regarding COVID-19. I've isolated, shielded, worn a mask and gloves on the very rare occasions I had to leave the house, and 'bubbled' when permitted. So no dear reader, I don't take the rules lightly, but my brief experience at The Ship today has left me quite flummoxed. My dad and I arrived at the pub (complete with masks should these be required) hoping for a (first since lockdown) pleasant evening meal and drinks. On entering we were instructed to sit at a table in the beer garden (I am in a wheelchair so it would create less disruption following the 2 metre rule indoors) and either scan the QR code on the table and connect to their WiFi, or visit their website to place our order. As I did not have my phone on me my Dad attempted to visit the website. No signal. After 10 minutes we finally connected to their WiFi, placed our order and the website froze. Dad reentered the bar and politely asked whether they could take our order verbally and pay contactlessly. We  were then informed that this was not permitted and therefore we could not be served. 'Pub policy' was the only explanation proffered. Somewhat shocked, we commenced the trek home. My advice? Do not visit The Ship without a reliable mobile phone, nor if you require a warm welcome. You will be left sorely disappointed on both counts.

We stayed for a night at the Ship recently and on this particular night the front of house was run by 1 member of staff who I believe was covering from another hotel in the chain. What a fantastic job he did! From the moment we walked in we were made to feel welcome and were able to check into our room slightly early. The staff member worked tirelessly to serve not only drinks but food to the residents. He made sure everyone was being looked after and was very efficient and courteous. Our room was lovely with a free bottle of wine being a nice touch, food in the restaurant and the atmosphere in the bar were both great.Thank you We’ll definitely be back!

We went for Sunday Lunch and found the food to be of excellent quality. Although we had the traditional roast there were lots of other choices. My husband recommends the sesame coated chicken served with an Asian coleslaw. I am gluten free so had the soup with gluten free bread and the choice for gluten free meals is good. Service was excellent and the place has a lovely ambience. Being Norfolk dogs are welcome in the bar in which can also eat. Overall well worth a visit!

My husband and I decided to have a day at Brancaster beach with the dog and made a reservation here online the before as they offer fog friendly tables. We had never been here before and did arrive a little earlier tan out reservation time but were welcomed warmly and shown to a nice covered area that was tastefully decorated. My husband had the rump burger with han cut chips which he said was really good and I had the chicken and mushroom pie with mash, mush pies an extra gravy which was delicious. The pastry was thin and crisp with proper pieces of chicken in it and when I commented how nice it was the waiter advised it was home made which you could clearly tell, just what was needed after a long walk along the beach. As my husband was driving I had a couple of Pimms and lemonade which came out looking great. To finish off I had the creme brulee which was lovely. We enjoyed our meal and will be back.

Visited the ship for drinks & food. You need scan a QR code go to a website & order your drinks 15 minutes later your drinks arrive delivered by a guy who was incredibly rude & up himself. The system would be a complete waste of time for guests with no smart phone or not tech savvy 2.30 food is stopped being served after the guy that dropped the drinks observed us looking at the menu & failed to tell us until it was too late. We watched lots of customers come & go without ordering. 1/10

We had dinner yesterday. The service started with a bang after the rather, offhand, surely and pretentious welcome from the maitre d. Once settled we ordered and drinks arrived quickly. The starters were average quality and presentation. The chef somehow managed to mess up a simple Prawn Cocktail. The mains were unfortunately the same. Very average. Overall the experience was very mixed. Great atmosphere. Good service apart from the rude Maitre D. And rather expensive and average food. We are frequent travellers who have eaten in a wide variety of restaurants Fast Food to Michelin Star and being honest this place was nicely average and trading on its name and definitely not value for money.
