Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A great stay, with a fantastic breakfast and a great Sunday lunch......but spoilt by an extremely unfriendly member of staff. The final straw was coming down for a coffee at 10.25am on Sunday to be told that check out was 10.30am [no one had mentioned...this previously]. I said Ok, we would drink our coffee, pack and leave. At 10.55 we came down to settle our bar tab and leave......he said it was £75. That seemed high and when I asked for a copy of the bill I saw he had added a late departure charge of £25. When I asked he said we were 25 mins late leaving and it was £25.......ie. £1 a minute!!! Never experienced anything like this before will not be going back.......which is sad because it not a bad place! Just spoilt by a single member of staff.More

We were recommended to eat here on a Sunday, so we made the booking, and arrived on a cold Sunday afternoon. The place was packed, but Ian showed us to our table, and very friendly he was to. Food quickly ordered, and 10 minutes later,...there it was in front of us. Belly of port, with all the trimmings, and wow, what a delight. The food was exquisite, and plenty of it. We will definitely be back for some more. Many thanks to all the staff.More

Disappointed by the attitude of the customer who booked on the wrong day and was an extraordinarily rude little man I hope he enjoyed his lunch at The Thomas Lord.

Booked for lunch however when we arrived told our reservation had been put in for the next day. The person behind the bar was very unhelpful said they had stopped serving and not his fault. His reaction was rude and sarcastic, disappointed by his attitude.

We came to The George for dinner and luckily Ian was on duty to make sure everything went well, he knows how to run front of house. The food was also really good again. Keep it up.

Booked Friday evening dinner, very friendly staff, shown quickly to our lovely table. Had the baked Camembert to share as a starter …. Huge and tasted amazing. Followed by the Eye fillet which was absolutely stunning. If you are in the area I would highly...recommend stopping here for dinner.More

The pub has all the signs to be amazing but sadly it is not by any stretch of the imagination. The village setting is quintessentially British and on arrival the scenery does put you in a great mood. Sadly that lift in spirit does not...last on. Stayed one night there and as soon as you walk in you feel like the staff are disappointed that you did make it to the place. Taken to the room upstairs and it was very very clean. Yes it is small and the shower room reminds you to go back to weight watchers upon your return home. It’s a pub room and walls are paper thin. I could hear the person next door unzip his suitcase!! I hope that’s what it was…. Booked dinner for 7:30 and the restaurant was simply empty. Guy at bar took me the the table furthest away and luckily I ordered my drinks whilst I was at the bar. Guy brought me the menu when I sat down but he never came back. At 7:50 I walked to the bar to call the waitress who was most helpful since the guy forgot about me. Dinner was pricey but very good. Guy from counter came to get my plate at 8:20 and I asked for the dessert menu. 15 minutes later I walked to bar to tell them I am leaving. The guy then said oh sorry I forgot to bring the menu!! The restaurant was just empty and he forgot!!!! The 2 staff were busy all the time discussing tipping week whilst they totally ignored a paying customer. Room wise: if you are like me and built for comfort with extra padding, you will find the shower room and the toilet most uncomfortable. It is extremely small and tight. No hot water in wash basin but shower was powerful and hot. Breakfast is included but it’s only continental. Full English is extra. You don’t help yourself but rather tell the waitress what you want and she brings it to you. Coffee is made fresh in front of you and the morning service (without the bearded guy from night before) was excellent!More

Stayed here overnight while walking the South Downs Way. Lovely pub! Welcoming log fire, comfortable beds, wonderful food. The manager kindly offered us a lift back to the trail after breakfast, which saved us 2 miles uphill walk back. We would definitely recommend this place...and would love to come back!More

Food was great, service was slow and inatentive. Bell for food pick-ups was being rung three to four times before waiting staff went to the kitchen.

Booked a specific room for a special occasion, which the hotel was notified of. Was given a different one, with several conflicting excuses. Spent ages listening to the phone conversation in the room we should have had, through paper thin walls. We were the only...customers in the overpriced and chilly restaurant so there was no atmosphere. Asked the waitress if there was salad with the steak and she said no, so we ordered salad. The steak came with a mound of pea shoots. The salad was a bucket of pea shoots. We'd had enough pea shoots so we didn’t eat the salad. We went to the bar area after dinner, having not been offered a chance to order dessert or coffee, to hear the chef loudly complaining to the bar staff about customers who "complain" (we didn’t complain, we asked) about salad, only to leave it. Next morning, our otherwise lovely breakfast had a pile of inappropriate pea shoots on it. On a full English breakfast.More
