From 1960 when my auntie lived in Westborough all the way through the 1970’s, when I was a ‘Saturday boy’ milkman for the old Coopers dairy in Foston I have visited the Reindeer in Long Bennington, the last time being almost 7 years ago when...I persuaded friends that this was one of the finest traditional pubs around, and had an extraordinary wonderful evening meal on spec.
So whilst travelling trough Newark, we detoured to the Reindeer for lunch.
Wow, gone is the romantic garden and old traditional way, a refurbished ‘gastro’ pub now serves guests.
Before coming to the food, I offer two real gripes:
A wooden cigar box was placed upon the table, without explanation, and upon opening it contained what I can best describe as my woodworking apron from school days, with its several pockets across the front. In this instance when unrolled each pocket contained items for eating (knifes, fork, spoon napkin etc). This is not necessary, twee and not in the least covid friendly.
Gripe number two, when we asked for condiments, each was brought to the table in recycled small glass jars, the sort that jam is served in as a single portion. We quickly discovered it is almost impossible to pour vinegar from one of these without getting all or nothing, and that sea salt and black pepper need the addition of a grinder if the contents are to be used.
This aside the two course meal we both opted for, filled us, was not unpleasing and was served hot, although once the batter was removed from the fish, there wasn’t a lot of fish to eat.
However with two drinks and with each of us having a two course meal (starter and main) I was able to pay the bill with a hit of my card on the machine, not bad!
I wouldn’t detour again to go to the Reindeer, but I am sure there is a market for this kind of pub.More
