This was the first time that myself and my partner had been out to a restaurant since lockdown and were unsure what to expect, especially from a quaint local village pub such as this one. The Ostrich Inn was recommended as one of the places to eat by the owners of our holiday cottage. We booked in over the phone - which was a miracle as we had terrible phone signal and we were very impressed that they could hear us! Upon arriving it was clear that the pub and its owners had gone to great lengths to put measures in place to make the place COVID secure including signing in and staff wearing face shields, however the place still had a great atmosphere. We were promptly shown to our table and the pub still held its cosy country charm. There were great menu choices and we very much enjoyed the fish cakes and sausage dishes with generous portions! Service was prompt and the food was great. The desserts were pretty special as well as we enjoyed the sticky toffee pudding and renowned bread and butter pudding! Extremely reasonably priced given the quality of the food and would not hesitate recommending it to others. Thank you for a really great visit, myself and my partner felt safe and still enjoyed the eating out experience.

A proper country and community pub. The locals make you feel very welcome and the fire and conversation in the bar gives the place a great feel. The menu is very well put together - not so much you cannot choose but so much variety you have to think - I suspect much of it local. The beer choice is very good - excellent Budweiser Budvar on draft and a number of local cask ales. Perhaps one area of improvement is to assess if there are too many ales. I had two different pints, both were way past their best and I mentioned this to the barman who didn’t seem to take my feedback on board, and I work in the brewing industry and was only trying to help. As a result, I left much of my last pint. Nevertheless, a great pub, very dog friendly and one well worth searching out.

We spent a lovely Sunday lunchtime here by the open fire and even the Covid measures couldn’t spoil the ambiance and welcoming service. The food was very tasty and they went out of their way to make a vegan version of their mushroom risotto for one of us, which was just delish. Highly recommended!!

Sadly this is the first time that we have tried to raise concerns with a manager or leave a poor trip advisor review. We were recommended The Ostrich by the owners of our holiday cottage and booked in for tonight and had been really looking forward to coming. When we arrived we were shown to a table in a gloomy dark corner and my teenage son joked whether they would notice we were there and it appears no they didn’t. It took over 20 minutes for the waitress to come and take our drinks order then another 10 for them to arrive. At 45 minutes we were giving up all hope of ordering our food when they eventually noticed we hadn’t had our order taken. The waitress assured us that there wouldn’t be any further delays. We also ordered another drink for one of our sons. We were then quite impressed that our food started to arrive after only a 15 minute wait with two beef wellingtons being brought to the table. 5 minutes later however rather than the remaining food being brought the waitress came to take the beef wellingtons away as they were apparently for a different table. She asked us if we had eaten any as she wanted to give them to the other customers despite having seen us touch the plates when she had brought them (not sure that this meets Covid regulations). We had however tried them and my husband had intended on sending his back as the jus was cold (did taste nice though). So with all the delays as my son 25 minutes on still hadn’t received his drink and an hour and 15 minutes after arriving and seeing customers who had arrived after us having had starters, mains and several rounds of drinks we asked to see the manager. Unfortunately when she came to our table she had no interest in hearing our concerns, made no apology and just blamed everything on implementing new systems for Covid and her manner was arrogant making us feel we were in the wrong for complaining. At that point we decided we didn’t want to stay and that we were going to go. She left our table at that point. We waited for a few minutes for a waitress to appear so we could pay for our drinks but none did and we had had enough of waiting so left.

This pub was recommended by a travel guide but we should have checked the latest reviews online.
We booked 4 weeks in advance but the booking was never recorded, however pplite staff found us a table. Later wevoverheard another couple met the same problem.
At the time of booking I was assured a high quality vegetarian and vegan meal. What we got was plates of seriously overcooked, mushy rissotto rice, overloaded with salt and laden with an unnecessary amount of truffle oil, in fact swimming in it. Ok, some decent mushrooms were thrown in but we have eaten mushroom risotto countless times and this was the worst ever.
We were hungry and tackled the meal which was hot thank goodness. We are not in the habit of complaining or wasting food but on hindsight we should have sent it back straight away and found somewhere else to eat.
The beer garden looked uninviting and the toilet area was poor too☹

Found this lovely little pub with a great menu on our travels through the Forest of Dean. Landlady was very hospitable and welcoming making sure we were well looked after. Food was high end quality and matched with some great ales we were thoroughly impressed. Proper pub - proper food....

Me and my partner were very excited about visiting the ostrich. We were hyped up by the reviews and a visit from some relatives. Unfortunately it didnt live up to expectations.
We were positioned in a narrow window sill in the dining area. Other customers had placed left over cutlery, plates, jugs and coffe mugs on the table as the bar staff did not have the capacity to remove them themselves. We had to deliver them to the bar for them.
At no point did we get table service and we were never informed that it was service at the bar. We went to the bar after a 15 mins of waiting and our order was taken, however we did not receive our drinks for 45 minutes.
We ordered food when we went to the bar and that was delivered without knifes and forks, which we had to scavenge from around the pub.
Ultimately the service was poor, but the 2 young girls who were responsible for our service were over worked and we dont hold them responsible at all.
Management should of been available on a busy night to help orchestrate proceedings and manage the flow of customers. This would have allowed the workload to be managed effectively.
Will not return.

We were extremely disappointed with the dish we ordered both in terms of quality and value for money . We ordered monk fish and tiger prawns. What we received was a very small dish straight out of the microwave with a some mange tout on the side. We managed to find three or four pieces of monk fish and a similar number of prawns which were swimming in a runny greasy cheese sauce. The cost was £18.50 per dish.
This place is very popular with tourists but we left thinking that we were being ripped off.

We visited this pub on a Friday evening about 9ish for a drink. Very pleasant, friendly staff. We came back on Saturday evening for food (pre booked). Crammed to the rafters, very very busy hardly a space between tables so felt pretty uncomfortable. It appeared that only two young girls were working front of house and did a good job considering how busy it was although we did have to wait at least 20 minutes to order drinks. The food came out and was ok but nothing exceptional and we did have to ask for extra vegetables as only a few brought out originally. Found the menu rather confusing as didn't really state what was included with the mains.

The Ostrich is a very old, but charming Pub, which adds to the joy of any visit. Dining here offers a hug on a plate as it's all so comforting. We have been fortunate to dine here many, many times over the years and the quality & quantity of the food is always delicious and generous. I highly recommend the King Prawn & Monkfish bake. It's cheesey heaven. My husband gave the Steak & Ale pie a big thumbs up too. To the rear of the pub there is a beautiful garden to sit and enjoy a peaceful pint. Do call and book ahead, as it's very popular and pub hours / days of opening can vary presently.

The pub is attractive and the staff were friendly. I met a friend for lunch, we both chose the ploughman’s. It arrived, and was some bread, two pickled onions, ham, a little salad (no dressing), some sliced apple, cheese, a tiny pot of chutney and a single small piece of wrapped butter. The bit that disappointed me the most was the cheese; it was obviously mass-produced, when I have a ploughman’s in a country pub you expect rind-on cheese proper cheese. The bread wasn’t fresh but wasn’t bad. What are you supposed to do with one small piece of butter on three big pieces of bread? The ham was nice and the chutney too was excellent even if there was so little of it. But at £15.50 for a ploughman’s you expect proper cheese and some dressing on your salad. The French would laugh at you if you gave them undressed salad, so the Ostrich chef should know better. I won’t be going back.

We booked a table for lunch, but were disappointed with average food and not particularly friendly staff. The dog was lovely - Bertie - as was the open fire. I had the fig and goats cheese to start, followed by the butternut squash tagine. Hubby had the burger, son had the wild boar sausages and they shared the charcuterie platter to start. We didn’t bother with dessert.

We visited The Ostrich Inn on a Wednesday evening in June '23 and it was buzzing - luckily we had booked a table in advance. The owner said she was taken by surprise at the number of people coming into the Inn for food that night, but they seemed to cope without any fuss. Would definitely recommend booking! The food was delicious (Foresters sausages, mussels and the 'Ostrich' burger). Despite the busyness of the evening, the owner still had time to talk to us to give us a little history about the building etc. whilst everything ran smoothly in the back ground. She was the perfect host and made us feel very welcome. Would definitely recommend.

I've visited The Ostrich a few times and my most recent visit this weekend was so fantastic I had to write a review. As a coeliac, it's often difficult to find restaurants that can guarantee no cross contamination when it comes to gluten, but not only were the staff totally educated on what I could/couldn't eat, the food was absolutely phenomenal. Hugely appreciated the fact that they use separate fryers for the chips and that two of the desserts were 100% gluten free. Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic. Can't wait to visit again.

When visiting a pub named The Ostrich it would be rude no to have the ostrich burger. It was an excellent choice, with proper rustic chips and a side salad. Washed down with a pint of Butty Bach to make it perfect. Luverly jubbly.
