Situated in the lovely village of Sheldon on the high plateau of the Peak District, this establishment offers homely excellence. The open fire and the quaint ambiance made for a welcome refuge from a chilly February afternoon. The food is ample, wholesome and cheerfully presented. Popular with the locals and regulars - always a good sign.

Enjoyed a drink with my husband one evening so returned with friends to try the food. The food was okay but only okay. The steak pie was a bit chewy and the pub was very quiet. I would try again as it might have just been an off night.

If it's great food, super real ales, characterful charm and a open fire you're after, this is the pub for you. It serves great honest pub food at a incredibly reasonable price. You get the sense that loads of locals go there which is always a good sign. Fantastic overall experience for a excellent lunch and drinks after a long... More

We needed a one night stopover to attend a local function early one morning in January with another couple. Rooms were perfect, dinner and breakfast were exceptional and service was first class. Coffee machine in corridor woke up everyone else who doesn't normally get up at 6.30am but otherwise a very satisfactory experience.

Great pub and lovely food, nothing too fancy which is reflected in the price but never disappointed!

We had boxing day lunch here. Well priced, tasty traditional pub grub. Good ales. Nothing fancy. Warm log fires after a decent walk. Does what it says on the tin. Fair selection for the veggies in the family, which is always a bonus.

Four seniors called for a Monday lunch, which is always a bit of a risk, as many pubs are closed. This pub is really informal and quaint, and our welcome was warm enough. One or two local folk were in and enjoying the open fire, and were happy enough to chat if you made the move. The range of old... More

Had a lovely, cosy meal here one Sunday evening after the Bakewell christmas markets. Friendly staff, good selection of veggie/vegan options, large portions and good prices.

Went at the end of November for Sunday lunch, with my wife and daughter, to celebrate my birthday. We had reserved a table earlier in the week. I had telephoned to advise we would be slightly late due to traffic problems. The table we were allocated had to be in the coldest part of the pub, and so we moved... More
