Amazing! We opted for the 5 course tasting menu for lunch, which once canapés/amuse bouche/ breads/ petit fours are added becomes 9 courses so made sure you arrive hungry! Staff were lovely and friendly, and didn’t look down on us at all though we were...by far the youngest customers in there on a midweek lunch. All the courses were amazing, we couldn’t pick a favourite. They catered very well for having one vegetarian and one ‘regular’ of the tasting menu, and explained each dish clearly. There was also a vegan option available. Highly recommend!More

Whenever we are in Matlock we always dine at Stones. The food and service are consistently good. On this visit, three of us had the scallops and one had the black pudding, all were delicious. For mains, two had the beef, one had the duck...and the other had the lamb. All choices were excellent, well presented and perfectly cooked. It’s unfortunate that we live so far away and can’t visit more often.More

We visited for Saturday lunch, having taken the train which is direct from both Derby & Nottingham. Stones represents the best of Derbyshire and well worth a visit. We opted for the three course set lunch, which came with a variety of complimentary choices, including...amuse bouche, soup, bread & chocolates. All dishes were beautifully prepared and presented. The staff were all professional. They were experts at catering for a gluten free diet, making some excellent alternatives where required, including particularly good gluten free bread. We will definitely be visiting again.More

The food was absolutely fantastic. Sadly the service let it down. The staff were inattentive, requests were forgotten (so they lost out on money we would have spent on wine/after-dinner drinks) and we felt very ignored. It was busy, but they had plenty of staff...on - not sure if they’re new or just a little incompetent. Anyway, we couldn’t fault the food, so the chefs are doing a marvellous job. They just need some better front of house staff to do it justice.More

Delightful lunch for my partner’s birthday. We had the lunch menu and it was superb. My starter involved cheese and grapes with a delightful dressing; hers was a smoked haddock creation. Main course she had the lamb and I had the blade of beef. In...addition we enjoyed several “taster” items as well as delicious home made bread with two different butters. Service was attentive but not intrusive. A lovely treat.More

We opted for the autumn tasting menu with wine pairings - it was for my birthday! Positives : 7/8 of our plates were delicious, perfectly cooked and really yummy! The new cheese Gruyère dish (gf for me) was awful though. It was essentially runny cheese...in between two shop bought crackers...! You would expect for the price and 2 rosettes that any gf alternations would be made from scratch. The wine pairings were perfect however it would have been nice if the staff would provide more information about how and why the wine pairs nicely with the food The staff were lovely and attentive however I felt it was weird that there wasn't one waiter assigned to our table. It would have been nice to have one waiter introduce themselves at the beginning for continuity. It was my birthday and staff were aware - however they didn't acknowledge this - it's the little things sometimes! We were sat in the bit before the conservatory and honestly not as nice as the other part of the restaurant. Overall food was mostly delicious - especially the ham hock and that pistachio ice cream ... that cheese cracker was truly awful though!!More

We opted for the “five” course tasting menu but be prepared to add two amuse bouche courses and sweeties with coffee. All very tasty and beautifully presented. As expected for Michelin Star quality it isn’t cheap but compared to similar quality restaurants it is great...value, £50 pp for the 5/7 courses. Wine and pre-lunch drinks also reasonably priced. Brisk but friendly service.More

Had dinner on a Friday night. All the courses we had were excellent across two courses and a shared desert. The service was really good and given the quality of the food, the price is very reasonable. A place to go to treat yourselves and...we’ll definitely return.More

From the moment we arrived we were waited on with great attention. We had a lovely comfortable drink in the well presented rear area facing the river while contemplating our meal. We were taken to our table and served by a few young waiters and...waitresses who’s attention to detail was sublime. I won’t go into the food too much just to say it was beyond all expectations and the quality was so high we were left without any doubt this was a very very special place. I personally cannot remember a better experience or meal. Value for what we received tonight was superb. If we are ever in this area again I would without doubt come back here, that said I may well drive the 4 hours just to come here again.More

This was the best meal both me (veggie) and my husband (meat eater) have had in, well, maybe ever. If you are veggie/vegan/allergic, make sure you tell them when they ask initially as they bring you canapés and other bits and bobs without you ordering...them so they need to know. I can't fault anything about our meal here, it was absolutley delicious from the starters right through to the cheese board. My main course was basically a plate of Jersey royals and it was one of the best things I've ever eaten. The service was excellent throughout too, our only complaint was that, due to a maths failure we didn't leave a big enough tip!More

Lunch One of our favourite restaurants. Dining at this modern british place is very special and in a beautiful location. This is one of our favourite restaurants that we have visited on numerous occasions. The food they serve is always excellent. We chose their Summer...5 course tasting menu, which at £50 is amazing value. You also get snacks, amuse Bouche & and bread with flavoured butter. (Some restaurants count these as part of the tasting menu) Canapés BBG Pulled Pork Croquette asian slaw - sriracha mayo. 'Cheese + Onion cheese sable, caramelised onion compote chive emulsion. Amuse Bouche Pea Velouté crème fraiche, mint oil. Bread Spelt and Rye Sourdough Homemade Cultured Butter Parsley + Lemon Confit Tomato Tartar whipped feta - tomato water - basil oil - onion seeds Seared Scallops caramelised onion - pickled mushroom - lemon - chive - bacon Confit Lamb Breast carrot purée - goat's curd - candied walnuts - herb emulsion *best lamb dish we have had for ages. Pancetta-wrapped pork fillet + Slow-cooked belly sweet potato - caramelised apple purée - wholegrain mustard + honey jus White Chocolate + Raspberry (blondie, mousse, parfait) raspberry compote - lemon crème fraiche ice cream You don't have to have the tasting menu. They offer a choice of - Two Courses £34.50 Three Courses £38.50 Served at Lunch & Dinner Staff are very friendly and helpful. Service was brisk, efficient, and professional. If you've never had a tasting menu before, this is a must try at a very realistic price.More

Three of us had a celebration dinner here, and in a word, it was sublime. Delightful surroundings, lovely warm and welcoming staff, and the most wonderful food. The little extras, like amuse-bouche, fresh, warm sourdough rolls with home made butter, and a pea velouté punctuated...a dining experience beyond compare. This is a gem, and we cannot wait to return. It was truly heavenly.More

Been to this restaurant many times unfortunately tonite was very disappointing, the bread that came out was harder than the rocks in the derwent that we could see outside, and the lamb for the main was tasteless, shame but won't be returning

~I would say smart casual. I wouldn't say they would be overly fussy but as most people go there for sort of special meal people tend to dress up so smart casual is sort of in keeping with clientele.
