First meal out since lockdown and it was fantastic! I’d been a bit apprehensive about going out but I needn’t have worried at all - the restaurant was spotless and the social distancing and hygiene measures they have in place really are excellent. They’re working on a reduced menu at the moment - changing weekly - because of govt guidelines but there’s something for everyone and they also accommodated my dietary needs brilliantly (gluten free). The waiter was attentive and polite, and the atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. My friend and I had the beetroot and the ham hock scotch egg starters, sea bream and short rib mains (that beef was melt in the mouth and the rosti was unbelievably good), halloumi and truffle fries sides, and we shared a cheese board to finish. We also had drinks and coffees, and both felt that it was very reasonably priced. Overall an excellent experience, I will definitely be booking again!

A group of four of us had dinner here on Tuesday evening. Our table was booked for 6.15pm and the place was quite empty. By 7.30 it was buzzing! Three of us had the steak and ale pie which was delicious. Really tender meat, nice pastry and mashed potatoes and the gravy was yummy! It seemed a bit expensive at £14 but it was extremely filling and we didn’t have room for a dessert. I would only say, as constructive criticism, that it would have been nice to have more than one sort of vegetable on the plate. I know not everyone enjoys vegetables, but I really do! Staff were lovely and it was a good experience.

Called in for a drink after a long walk with the dog, ended up staying for a few hours, enjoyed wonderful bar snacks and great beer. All the staff made us and Lexi feel very welcome so much so we booked a table for the Saturday evening, the food was delicious and even on a packed Saturday evening the staff all found time to chat. Next time we are visiting the area we will definitely pop in for beer and food.

Visited for the first time since refurbishment. Now appears very smart and fresh. Attended a part of a group for lunch. We were seated away from others - there was no one else in the section of the restaurant which we were seated in but it was very noisy and difficult to hear each other at times. Background music needed to be more background ! I was disappointed with my main course order from the standard menu (not the set lunch menu). Portion size was very small and I consider the price was high for the quality of the dish which I received. When paying for my meal at the till (staff were happy for individuals to pay for their own meals) it was transactional - pleasant but without interest in my experience. Not sure if I could recommend on today's meal.

On a visit to Sudbury from London I was seeking a venue for my father's birthday. I spotted The Fox from the A131 and decided to give it a try. Firstly we were asked 'have you booked' and the waitress sought advice if they could accept a walk in. The place was a 1/4 full the whole time we were there. We wanted the roast beef, which is 'served pink' myself and my companion prefer well done, but we were told, we could have it well done, but it will be tough and difficult to eat. Really!!!! What grade of beef are you purchasing whereby not having it 'pink' would make it tough? We ordered the pork loin roast. The meal consisted of 2 miniscule slices of pork, with a square of pork belly on top, with a tiny amount of pork on and crackling. The meal was presented as large with a huge yorkshire pudding, 3 bland undercooked roast potatoes and veg which was passable. Swimming in apple sauce, which should be presented separately. This meal was certainly not value for money (£15.00) shocking price, when other establishments can knock out a wonderful roast for around £10 or even less. I think this public house are trying to be too clever for the area. Suffice to say I will not be gracing this establishment with 10 people. Your loss. Try to emulate the Kings Head in Gosfield, wonderful roasts.

The GF and I used to come to The Fox under the previous owners. The food became a bit samey (which I am sure worked for their business) and the not being able to book became annoying when you couldn't get in and everywhere else was full. We have been for Saturday Lunch and Sunday Lunch over the past two weekends and loved it. Last Saturday, we went for the three course option. The cottage pie fritters were excellent and the scotch egg was perfect.I had the pork with gremolata and it was excellent. Sunday Lunch today was a smaller affair (just the one course). For £15 the sirloin of beef with a huge yorkshire, extra gravy and veg was delicious. Although we did feel a little hungry after so perhaps some more potatoes would have been good. Either way, really happy that the fox is back with a wider menu and bookings!

We ate dinner here last night having been persuaded by friends to step out of our front door. Food was delicious - we very much enjoyed our choices from the restricted menu. I understand that this currently changes each week. I actually think that the choice of 3 starters, 3 mains and 3 puddings is a good way to go....... It obviously allows the kitchen to produce high quality dishes. Service was friendly and welcoming without being over the top. The most reassuring Covid measure was the lack of people .....or perhaps I should say that each service is restricted to just 40 people. Bookings are staggered to ensure that there is not a great rush of people arriving at the same time. It seemed a little silly that the hand santiser dispenser was placed behind a placard on an easel in the entrance lobby. It was not obvious to see, it was not easy to reach and we were not asked to use it before entry. One small issue - We were seated beneath a speaker for the sound system - it was a little intrusive and we found it difficult to hear each other ( we were a group of just 4 so not an anticipated difficulty)

Very attentive and helpful staff. One of our party of 4 required gluten free food and the staff were very informative in this respect. We all had different food and it was excellent. Tasty and well presented. Apologies for delay in posting this review! Just about to book a return visit.

My husband and I visited here for an evening meal. We were greeted nicely and seated. Firstly we ordered a bottle of red wine, a Malbec. which was brought over to us in a bucket of ice!! Surely they should know red wine is not served on ice. Next we ordered our food. The starters were fine and tasted nice but the mackerel pate was served in a kilner jar. Very strange, and awkward to get the pate out of. Next our mains. My husband enjoyed his meal of chicken supreme but I ordered crab risotto which really had no flavour and very little crab. It was really bland. It was edible but got very boring. At £19 I expected better. Service up to this point had been fine. We ordered dessert. My husband ordered a brownie which he couldn’t eat as it was so dried out and as hard as a rock. I ordered cheese which was really very minimalistic. A small price if Brie and smoked apple down. Chutney was nice but for £8.50 was nothing to shout about. We sat for ages with staff walking past and ignoring our plates which we had put to the side of the table. My husband had to go up to the bar to order coffee because he got fed up waiting. We would have gone home sooner but we were being picked up so had a coffee while waiting. The coffees came and she cleared our table of our dessert dishes. We told her about the brownie and she kindly said she would take it off the bill. Over all we felt the food was not worth the money. Our bill was £95 and the food and service were really not great. They only had 3 tables of people eating so we really would have expected better. We will not be returning here. It’s a shame because before it changed hands it was a nice pub with a lovely atmosphere and great food. :(

We only use this road to Sudbury infrequently so this was our first visit since the re-opening and we were very impressed. QuietTuesday lunchtime afgter the recent move to tier 2 restrictions-therewereonly three other tables taken- but we were quickly made welcome and drinks came quickly. We ordered the grilled sandwich menu,my wife choosing the Caprese vegetarian option and I had the Reuben with salt beef and cheese. Both were well presented generous portions with a generous side of frites. aTogether with drinks this came to a very reasonable £27. Service was very friendly and the place was totally Covid compliant without being oppressive. We will call again when visiting Sudbury.

My wife and daughter had an excellent dinner on Friday evening at the Bulmer Fox. We were a little concerned that it would not live up to the excellent food and service the previous owner and his team provided but we were pleasantly surprised. It was if anything… better! Super food served by an attentive young team who catered for all our needs. We were regular visitors before it changed hands and will be returning.

We visited for Sunday lunch on the first weekend after lockdown....and it was worth the wait! The service was exceptional, we felt very safe and the food was amazing (roast pork was perfect). Please visit, our local amenities need our support and you won’t be disappointed. We will be back!

Had a table for 4 booked for Sunday dinner at 12.30, arrived early and after being shown to our table our drinks order was taken. 35 minutes later our drinks still had not arrived and no food order had been taken. Approached the male member of staff there to be told I’ll be with you shortly, I then explained that we had been waiting for over half an hour for our drinks for him to repeat I’ll be with you shortly, I asked him politely to not say that again as I had already been waiting too long for him to reply I’ll be with you shortly! Absolutely shocking service. People that had come in after us were now eating yet our food order was not even taken. We left and we will not be returning. Due to the rudeness of this man this place lost over £100 in one booking. Highly recommended the George and Dragon in Melford as the staff are polite and friendly and the food is fabulous

We decided last minute to try and book this restaurant for lunch. Having never been before we were unsure what to expect. This is definitely fine dining, the food was beautifully presented and the taste was amazing. We opted for three courses at £26.00 per head and I very rarely eat desert but on this occasion could not resist. My Husband had the rabbit and pistachio terrine and I had the crab croquettes to start, for mains we both went with the beef cheeks and desert was lemon tart with clotted cream and raspberry coulis. Would definitely highly recommend this restaurant and will be going again soon.

In the area visiting Long Melford and chose this pub for our evening meal. We made an excellent choice. The food was brilliant. My wife and I chose crab and prawn polenta cake which was served with a lovely chilli relish. To follow I chose whole oven baked mackerel which I hadn’t had for years but was perfectly prepared and served with salsa verde. My wife chose the spatchcock chicken which was also cooked to perfection and just the right quantity. We couldn’t resist deserts which again were delicious. I sunk myself with chocolate mouse while my wife sensibly chose lemon creme brûlée. To sum up brilliant menu which changes fortnightly, great service and value for money.
