Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We waited quite a while to be given menus even though it was very quiet when we arrived. The cod and chips was very good, best bit of fish we have had in any restaurant lately, nice and white and flakey. However we won’t be returning as they slapped a 10% service charge on top which we weren’t expecting and also had a tip box on the side!

My wife and I have dined at the Codfather now 5 times, always enjoying cod and chips which have been first class. Last Saturday, I went ‘of piste’ and ordered the grilled plaice, chips and roasted vegetables. When the waitress brought our meals to the table I was absolutely stunned. It was beyond my wildest expectations and looked superb… large, succulent and beautifully cooked including the fries (to die for) and the roasted vegetables. All washed down with a very good chilled bottle of Chilean Sauvignon Blanc. I am in my 70s and have eaten in many great restaurants. The last time I had such a super grilled plaice was in a pub next to the fish market at Newlyn in Cornwall which you would expect. But in Sudbury? It really was an excellent meal and I couldn’t recommend the Codfather more highly.

A group of us had fish and chips in the dine in restaurant. Very good service. Nice place. Excellent menu, good choice. Some of us had haddock and chips with sides of mushy peas. Really lovely fresh fish with excellent chips. Mushy peas nice too. Very good portion size. We had four large pots of tea to share. A couple of us had grilled cod with vegetables and chips, again very tasty and well presented. Even with ten percent added for service it was good value. We will return next time in the area. Recommended.

Took our grandchildren to Sudbury for a day out and were disappointed because our usual fish and chip shop "Micks Fish and Chips" was closed for holiday. We went to The Codfather instead. We all ordered different things but my husband and I ordered Cod and chips. The portions were ok but the chips were dry and the fish not flaky they could take lessons from our usual shop as they are always lovely - never dry and fish always thick and flaky. . Charged £3.50 for a soft drink and almost £3 for a cup of tea. Then to top it all they added 10% service charge - not that there was anything wrong with the service but I have not been to a restaurant in a long time that added service charge automatically. Will not be returning.

Have been here many times for the vegan fish and chips and woukd never give another recommendation to anybody. The vegan fish was like rubber and the vegan scampi was in breadcrumbs and the manager said he changed supplier 4 months ago. Awful food today. Spoke to the manager and he still charged us a service charge and too £5.00 off for the scampi yet I paid £7.00 for chips and mushy peas! Do not bother to go there. The manager was so disingenuous and it spoiled our anniversary.

Servers were friendly but for a table of 2 there was no need for a 10%service charge. I ended up paying about £23 pound for fish and chips . Way to expensive considering it’s coming from the takeaway next door. If you’re coming here, go to the takeaway and have your food in the car, save a fortune. I won’t be back

I have over the years written many reviews of the Codfather in Sudbury and have only ever spoken very highly of it, its service, and its food to the extent that I have had birthday parties there. On Wednesday 23.11.22 I and my wife went in for lunch. We gave our order at the table to a charming table manager. Now The Codfather has always had its own interpretation of "Mushy Peas" in so much as they have had less constituency than I would like but I have just accepted it with a smile as if it was just the Godfather's own signature, but today it had gone to new depths and was almost a pea soup. The Tar Tar that was put on the table was nothing but Mayonaize with a very light sprinkling of Gerkin. The meal was brought to the table and the chips were perfect. However, the Haddock in batter was frankly DISGUSTING. The batter wasn't crispy and the Haddock had stuck to the batter and the ends of the Haddock had dried out and gone hard. It seemed to me that the fish had been left in a warming cabinet beyond its sell-by date. Going into a fish restaurant where you are paying far more than a takeaway price you expect an adequate table and plate service but the Codfather let itself down drastically because I know what they have in the past 13 years been capable of when they built up their business from just a takeaway shop.

Went for dinner with my husband and daughter. Had a lovely meal - first class. Fish was cooked beautifully and the chips were chunky and crisp - served hot. Waitress very friendly and a lovely cosy atmosphere

Only one other table in the restaurant when I arrived with my daughter and two grandchildren. Not a very welcoming reception from the waitress. Twice I smiled and said hello and twice I was ignored. Drinks service for a coffee 2 fruit juices and a coke took 15 mins. Food - 1 x cod roe, 2 x children chicken nuggets and chips, 1 x curry sauce, 1 x chips was £45.10 which by any standards is excessive. On top of this they tried to charge £4.10 for service. I refused to pay this based on the service provided.

This is a top notch restaurant, really extensive menu, great service, really tasty well cooked food and fairly priced. Easy parking on the hill nearby. A credit to Sudbury.

I expect to be informed before being ripped off for 10%. This isn’t America and it’s not up to customers to subside your staff wages. Mediocre food , fish was watery and still had the skin on , fish cakes so peppery and soft drinks are also a rip off . Wouldn’t go again

We value "The Codfather" highly and are delighted to find the lockdown has not caused it to stop trading like some other places. My wife and I went back to the Codfather today after being in lockdown for a very long time and we're so delighted to find things seemingly unchanged. I had Haddock and my wife had Scampi, both were cooked to absolute perfection and presented to us so professionally that I realised how much I had missed the Codfather. I truly don't know how Benny does it but he makes the meal taste as if it has been prepared in honey and the salad side dish to complement the meal was a meal in its self, but then they are influenced by the Greek for that. No, it's great to be back and my goodness how I have missed it due to the pandemic.

The restaurant was surprisingly quiet on a Friday evening but we found it very pleasant with nice decor. We very much enjoyed our plaice with chips and salad plus cod bites with curry sauce on the side. Portions were generous and other than a tasty bread roll, we didn't have room for anything else! Service was quick and efficient and we didn't feel the prices were excessive. It was probably our best meal during our stay in Sudbury.

Late lunch. Very quiet. I had king prawns with baby potatoes and stir fried vegetables. Everything was cooked to perfection and very tasty without overpowering the taste of the fish. Staff were very polite and friendly. The best fish restaurant.

We have just eaten here for the second time and thoroughly enjoyed every minute and every mouthful!! …. Our first visit I ordered cod and chips whilst my husband chose chicken and chips, to eat in the restaurant, along with ‘efes’ beer, which is hard to find locally! … Could not fault anything! .. Generous portions of beautiful cooked fresh food! Chips were spot on!! …… We have just dined in for the second time, both of us choosing scampi and chips with salad … Delicious! .. Once again, cooked to perfection, perfect portions, delicious fresh chips and salad! .. My husband again chose the ‘efes’ beer and I chose the merlot … Staff/owners are lovely, welcoming and polite, who also chose an appropriate time to ask if all was ok with our meals ….Perfection! … Anyone who has not dined here, please do, you will not be disappointed!
