What a find after a long walk! cosy multi-roomed pub with small interesting areas in which to eat or have a beer, real fire plus a wood burning stove in the small bar area. Very busy for food when we arrived mid afternoon on a Sunday, staff friendly and a good selection of beers. Our pies were awesome, full of quality tender beef, real proper chunky chips with a good selection of veg, the portion size was large and we were very hungry. I suppose the quality of the pies is reflected in the price slightly but you get what you pay for so to speak. Table service for the ordering food part. Highly recommended and we will return.

A new one to me. The only pub in the village. Parking is on the slim side, we did find a spot after a few minutes. A warm welcome from a chocolate labrador when we entered, do note no children under 6yrs old are allowed in the pub. However this is a very dog friendly pub. With Humphrey and Hettie labradors roaming free in the pub, their home. Open fires in each room. Several tables were reserved. We quickly found a free one. The Red Lion soon started to fill up. They have various cask ales here. Staff were very helpful. They have a 'nibbles' board as well as a starter menu. We opted for their own pork crackling. Which are nice large portions. For mains I had the shin beef, in red wine ju, with garlic mash and root vegetables. The parsnip could have done with a bit longer. The ju was smashing. All in all yummy just could have done with more. Mrs DogWalker had the lamb & mint pie. She had mash which was smooth. She described the pie as gorgeous. Whereas I would have liked more, she struggled to finish hers. The mains came promptly, but we had to wait for dessert. The pub was busy, a lot of people dining, busy for a Tuesday. For dessert I had the sticky toffee pudding, Mrs DW had the trifle. All this and 2 x pints of bitter £53.00

The pub was recommended to ourselves by our Airbnb host and as we wanted somewhere for lunch after a bust morning in the caves we decided on the Red Iion. We had a group of 7 and it was a Sunday, but on arrival the staff were accommodating and we based ourselves in the room opposite the bar. Initially a little chilly as the entrance was trying to deal will ‘Storm Dennis’ but there was a curtain which we pulled across the door which soon allowed the room to warmup. Food wise we order Steak and Ale Pie, Lamb and Mint Pie, Gammon and well presented and tasty. Overall a lovely meal and would recommend

The food was very tasty however the customer service was very poor. The senior lady was very good however the other staff were not as approachable. The food took ages to arrive (1 hour 20 mins) and the vegetables for a Sunday lunch were minimal which lacked choice especially for the price we paid. However my roast pork was very tasty but the roast beef wasn't very hot. Some of the party had pie which was not adequate for £15 but again it was very tasty. It seemed to us the pub was short staffed as other customers left complaining of the waiting time for drinks but this wasnt brought to our attention. There were no apologise for the long wait. I normally put positive reviews on here however I felt I had to mention the above.

Whilst this is a beautiful little pub, cosy and warm with real fires and very friendly staff...we were very disappointed with our Sunday roasts. The food was bland and generally tasteless and as such we felt it was overpriced. There are much better offerings for food in nearby villages so best idea just go there for a drink!

This is is the only restaurant we've visited on this trip to really take social distancing seriously. The staff wore masks or visors and insisted we sanitise on arrival, they had track and trace, not just floor markings but used cordons to restrict access and flow, and even has us lift the full drinks off the tray so that the waitress did not need to touch the glasses. Excellent measures. Good was good, my shepherd's pie very rich and tasty, although not huge. The wife's burger was a little disappointing, with no sauce or salad in it. Parking was tricky. I could not see the right place to park, and halfway through a mouthful was asked (presumably by a neighbour) to move my car. Some signs to indicate parking would be welcome. Great decor and atmosphere.

Visited this place early evening for a meal during covid, good precautions and pretty well organised, the young lad who served us was polite and the food and drinks came out quickly, after a throat operation i have to be a bit careful about what i choose to eat, generally it has to be soft or with a sauce, so i ordered the slow cooked pork belly, normally i would expect soft and juicy.. It was like trying to chew my belt..not sure what they did with it in the kitchen but i struggled through about half of it and could manage no more..real shame because wifes food was as expected, reasonable portions and prices and service was good..just dont choose the belly pork unless you have steak knives for teeth..

4 of us visited Saturday evening on August Bank Holiday weekend with our 3 dogs, although we could only be accommodated in the marquee outside the pub (due to last minute booking) we had a fabulous night. All the staff we spoke with were friendly and very welcoming even our dogs got a treat. We had garlic mushrooms and halloumi fries for a starter and they were lovely, very fresh and piping hot considering they had to be brought to us outside, for our main course we all had steak pie, chips and a side order of onion rings. The steak pie was delicious and packed with melt in your mouth steak accompanied by homemade chips and homemade onion rings. The steak pie was recommended to us and we were definitely not disappointed, unfortunately though it left us no room to sample a pudding! I can't wait for another visit just wished we lived a bit closer.

Just stayed for 2 nights in a classic village pub. The owner and Landlady Jeanne Mason and all her staff go out their way to make you feel welcome. The precautions they have put in since re-opening because of the lockdown make everyone feel very safe. They have introduced a table service for customers have erected a marque on the village green outside the pub The food and accommodation are second to none. We will certainly be making a return visit. Cannot speak to highly of this pub.

Food was lovely, chips were proper pub chips and homemade rhubarb crumble was lovely. It’s a very local pub which we really enjoyed. One thing I would say is Sundays as we were told once we got there are really busy and we had booked for 6:30 and by this time most of the food was ‘out of stock’ we’d been excited for a roast of steak and ale pie but both of these were out, as well as about 4 other options. Think this needs to be highlighted on the website or when booking as a bit of a disclaimer. Staff were very friendly and welcoming.

Thank you for your review. I'm really sorry we could not offer you what you wanted. Thankfully we are extremely busy since reopening after Covid. All our food is homemade and sometimes demand simply outweighs supply. I am just putting our 'proper menus' back out now restrictions have eased and I will make sure I mention this in them. I hope this hasn't put you off visiting us in the future. Thank you Jeanne

We (party of 3) called in here twice for drinks whilst out walking, and were so impressed with the quality of the real ales and picturesque country pub, we booked in for food on our last night of a weeks holiday in nearby Tideswell.....its approx 3~4 mins in the car or a 10-15min walk if you want to walk up an appetite (from Tideswell) The landlady and all the staff were very welcoming and gave 1st class service. We sampled all 5 of the real ales throughout the week and agreed that they were very well kept and in great condition and a good variety to taste. We ordered the steak pie & chicken pie (which were both extremely good) & the star of the table, fish and chips.....fish was very fresh in a light batter which hung over the sides of the plate. All in all, great ales with great traditional pub food in a cracking country pub. Best meal of a week spent in Tideswell

Thank you for your lovely review. I'm pleased you found us tucked away on the village green. One of my staff is the beer guru and we certainly look after our ales! My husband loves the pie and we can always tell when he is front of house because everyone orders it! I hope we will be welcoming you back in the future. Thank you Jeanne

We found the food we ordered to be quite underwhelming and overpriced for what it was. There were very limited options for vegetarians or vegans, and so we chose the homity pie, which was quite bland. It was also disappointing to see little effort with the beans, which were simply tinned Heinz!! The customer service is also hit and miss re friendliness.

We’ve been staying in the Peak District for a week’s holiday and wanted our final meal before returning home to be a good one. This was beyond good - I can honestly say it was one of the best meals I’ve ever eaten. I had the steak pie with mash and my other half had the pork belly, then we followed these with Bakewell pudding and sticky toffee pudding, all washed down with an extremely well kept beer (Absolution). The staff were lovely and the food was outstanding. We plan to stay in Litton next time we’re in this part of the world just so that we can eat here again!

Thank you very much for this lovely review. I am very fortunate to have great staff who have been with me for years. I will make sure my head chef, Ricky, reads this review. He is a brilliant chef and constantly works to his extremely high standards. Naomi my beer guru always makes sure we have a good selection of well kept ales. We hope to see you on your next visit. Thank you! Jeanne

We hadn't booked for Sunday lunch but were invited to sit outside in the sunshine on the unreserved tables and order food. We thought this would main a long wait but completely the opposite, our lunches came very quickly and were perfectly cooked and delicious, particularly my veggie pie. I could only see two staff front of house and they did an excellent job keeping everything running smoothly considering how busy it was.
