Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It's worth the detour! We stopped off on our way home from a little holiday outside of Bakewell, based on the strong recommendation of a friend. We were not disappointed. Stunningly poured real ales, and the best pie, mash, veg and gravy I've ever had....Unbeatable. Do not miss!!More

Stumbled across this pub after a long walk in the area. The staff were lovely, very friendly and welcoming. Loads of choice for food and reasonably priced. Very pleased we came across it and would recommend.

Called in for lunch although busy we were seated quickly. The food arrived quickly and was well presented and hot. I had steak pie and while the meat was tender and the pastry was nice it was totally without any taste. My partner had a...roast which was average. The main thing was how cold it was where we were seated and although I didn't venture to the loo's the ladies on the next table said it was absolutely baltic in there. Would have liked to have a desert but decided against it in favour of getting in the car and warming up.More

Well worth popping into if you’re touring the Peaks. A delightful, friendly, village pub. Good food, good beers with a great atmosphere.

A really nice village pub serving a good selection of local beers and main brands. We dined on a Monday evening and by 7..00pm, when we arrived, there were no free tables. Luckily, we were seated after about 30 minutes and enjoyed a very good...meal. Very friendly staff in an attractive setting.More

This is a cracking old school country pub in a stunning little village. In the past 12 months I have had 3 separate breakaways staying nearby to Litton. Each trip has always involved a nice stroll up to the Red Lion for lunch on at...least 2 days. Every time the food, the staff and the service has been excellent. Whether sat indoors or out, it is a great place to have food and then sit back and relax with a beer or two. Will definitely be back again on my next visit.More

I would rate this place zero, but unfortunately don't have the option to do so. In summary, the portions are meagre. The Sunday lunch has overdone, dry Yorkshire puddings. Really don't like the woman who runs this place, she's got no customer skills whatsoever and...looks miserable. I've been put off coming back because if they don't have what you order, they substitute items on the plate without asking you. What level of stupid is that?!More

Homity pie with salad and sweet potato fries falsely advertised, when I asked where the fries were they said they hadn't been on for months( despite the menu saying it did!). I expected a refund , they asked how much I wanted, I asked for...£4 ( ordinary fries were £3.50) .Later, at the end of my meal they changed their tune, they said I had been given extra salad and a tiny bit of chutney and that was the replacement so it was going to be full price. NB I wasn't asked what ' replacement' I wanted ,plus the 'extra' salad seemed not believable to me as the original amount would have had to have been tiny, more like a garnish, if the bit I ended up was a supposed an extra portion. Anyway who wants yet more salad when you are expecting fancy fries? I paid full price of £14 for a potato pie with chopped up lettuce and a few tiny bits of tomatoes in the end. I could, and would have , chosen a different meal, I could have had a veggie roast for approximately that price if the menu had correctly told me what I was getting for the money. Terrible customer service. No apology, no part refund for their mis advertised and mis sold productMore

Been here before several times and loved it just as much every time. This is a classic old-fashioned countryside pub with thick stone walls and low ceilings. We took some family friends here for dinner on a Saturday evening, with the express purpose of showing...off a good Derbyshire pub, and succeeded! The food here is always tasty with good portion sizes; the menu is a classic pub menu with steak pie, fish and chips, burgers and pastas etc. The resident pub dogs are very cute!More

Even booking the table was a pleasant experience so I expected a good evening at the The Red Lion and wasn't disappointed. I visited with my husband and children for dinner and from the moment we arrived the whole family were welcomed. We ordered drinks,...a good selection of quality alcoholic and none alcoholic and were shown to a lovely cosy table. The menu is simple but lots of pub classics. I had the ham, egg and chips which was delicious, home made chips and proper sliced ham. My husband had the pie which was full of meat and came with a lovely side of veg. The staff were friendly and attentive and the pub felt so homely we could have stayed all evening. We will definitely visit again and would highly recommend. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️More

We had been in Derbyshire for the day with the dog and stumbled across The Red Lion when looking for somewhere to eat. What a brilliant find! So lovely and cosy inside and lots of different little rooms. A proper village pub. I had one...of the day's specials, lamb shank served with garlic mash, green beans and lamb jus. I can honestly say it is one of the most delicious things I have tasted and piping hot! My husband had the 10oz steak with all the trimmings and also said it is one of the best he's had. My son asked for the steak and ale pie with chips and veg but unfortunately this had run out. So instead he had homity pie, which was a kind of cheesy mash with leek inside a pie case. He said the pie was very tasty, but it came with sweet potato wedges (so potato in the pie and more potato) and a small dish of chopped up salad which contained onion - he doesn't like onion so only picked a few bits out. Maybe as the pie already contained potato it would be good to serve with two different veg on the side instead of potato wedges? But he did enjoy what he had. The staff were very efficient and friendly and there was a good menu, also a variety of sandwiches and nibbles if you didn't want a full meal. Thoroughly recommended.More

Very difficult to find fault with this place, the quintessential English pub. A superb, well kept selection of cask beers, including one high ABV offering from Welbeck Abbey. Food to die for, the steak pie is monumental and worth coming away for the weekend alone!...Unspoilt interior. Very friendly principals and staff who go out of their way to make you welcome and indulge in friendly banter; the waitress remembered the last conversation we’d had almost three months ago! Dog friendly as opposed to dog tolerant. My favourite pub in Derbyshire and, if you give it a try, I’m pretty sure it’ll quickly become yours.More
