Average food, the staff all very young work hard but seem to have no one guiding them (lack of management). We were shown to a table not given menus, eventually we managed to get a menu but weren’t informed of any specials which we discovered were available when the table next to us were told of them. We were in a small room with 4 tables, 1 table having just had their food placed on the table were then told they needed to move as that table was reserved, the staff then sat a family down and as they were ordering food were told to hurry up as the table was reserved. We had to almost beg for drinks, asked twice for desert menu and got fed up waiting to pay, if I wasn’t so honest I would and could have walked out without paying. The pub is living off its location and doesn’t seem interested in returning custom which is a shame.

We came for a Sunday Roast and as a vegetarian, there is no option apart from x4 different type of meat. The waitress wasn't too sure what the alternative was, so after checking with the kitchen, I was told that it would be a plate of veg. A little disappointing. I appreciate that there was a vegan menu, but why have a vegan menu when you can't even cater for vegetarians on a popular Sunday dish?
It doesn't take a lot to keep some Quorn sausages in the freezer.
The Sunday Roast included Brussel Sprouts. It was clear they had food left over from Christmas and were using up food, but it's no longer Christmas and it was an unwanted addition. (I think most people are fed up of Brussel spouts after Christmas).
The plate of veggies was quite nice considering that's all it was. However, I did mention to the waitress that neither of us could eat the sprouts (even if we wanted to) nor the broccoli as they were very nearly raw. They must've been cooked for 60 seconds each, we couldn't even cut through with a knife. She apologised and she'd let the kitchen know, but there was no offer of a free drink or discounted bill, nothing. It's a shame as it could've been so much nicer.
It wasn't terrible, but it just wasn't great either...
The pub itself is lovely; just needs new management and staff re-training.
Also recently found out that they only have one star hygiene rating which is deeply concerning. We wouldn't have eaten there if we knew this was the case.
Final note, seeing the chef stood outside in his chef whites smoking just before you enter isn't the most professional site to behold, especially when his job is to handle food.

The service really lets this place down! Food is lovely and a good standard but some of the staff act like they can’t be bothered. When asked what the fish of the day was (as stated on the menu) the reply was ‘don’t know, probably cod’!
This is a ‘walkers pub’ full of muddy boots and muddy dogs, it is also very very draughty and cold! We were given a table by a door that was constantly opening, our table was freezing, there were other tables available yet when we asked to move we were told we couldn’t!! The table next to us became free and we moved there anyway to save us feeling so cold!
The food however, was delicious! So well done to the chef, they have the food just right at this place, it’s just such a shame it is let down by poor service.
When we were brought the bill we were told to go and pay at the bar. We did this and at no point were told about an extra charge of 99p for a ‘Carbon Free Dining’! We only noticed this after we had left the pub. Granted, it’s only 99p however it leaves a sour taste in your mouth when you are hoodwinked into paying for something you didn’t know about or agree to.
I don’t think I will be returning or not will I recommend to any of my family and friends.

Hi Nic,
Sorry you didn't enjoy your visit to the Strawbury Duck,i will look into why the floor staff didn't answer your questions a bit better as they all know the menu.As for the table,we have a seating plan for the whole day and sometimes we cant swap tables, as they are reserved out for the next sitting, which I stick to so it doesn't cause confusion for the rest of the day.
We hope you will visit us again and hope you have a great day
Regards

I came here as a party of about 20 on Friday (a booking made beforehand) - a very cute pub in a gorgeous location. I would strongly recommend getting the train as the station is right across the road - driving there was a little bit of a nightmare and there isn't lots of parking!
The chap behind the bar was lovely and all our food was served in good time and at the same time.
I ordered the signature strawberry duck and was not disappointed! It was cooked to perfection and the trimmings all complemented eachother immensely.
I would definitely return but travel by train next time!

Hi,
Really good to hear you loved your visit and the food.
We can only apologise for the limited amount of parking available, we are trying to think of ways to increase it but it is always good to use the train as it is right outside!
Hope to see you again in the near future.
Kind Regards,
The Strawbury Duck Team

Usually the strawberry duck is a great restaurant, unfortunately the take away to the rear of the pub didn’t hit the Mark. Coffees were £3 each, considering these were packet instant coffee topped up from a water boiler they were worth about £1:50 max. The barm cakes were of poor quality and fell apart, not a great experience and way too expensive for what you get. Won’t be helping out that particular take away again as I don’t think it’s fair value. I realise the business needs to make money but this isn’t the way.

Me and my partner were having a walk around the Entwistle Reservoir. We came accross the strawberry duck who were selling takeaway food and drink from an outdoor BBQ area.
We ordered 2 coffees and 2 bacon, sausage and egg barms. This came to £14 and was DEFINATELY NOT WORTH IT.
After waiting about 10 minutes for the food to be made (even though most of it was pre-cooked) the sausages were completely unedible and tough and the bread was of poor quality as it just fell to bits with the egg.
The bacon was tasteless and the server also forgot to cook the chips despite me asking for some. They did offer to make them but after waiting 10 minutes already with a big queue behind we decided not to wait.
It's not very well ran, the quality certainly does not live up to the price and you may as well just go past a greggs on the way home!
We will not be returning at any cost, and if you're walking past, don't bother as it will just dissapoint you.

Went for a lovely Sunday walk around reservoir and stopped for a roast here. It was busy and the table next to us had a party. My roast arrived with stone hard roast potatoes and veggies. I have requested for roasted potatoes to be replaced and I got given new dish with soft potatoes, which was nicer however parsnip the rest of veggies were still not cooked. Disappointing
Staff was very nice.

Table for 9 people, pre-booked and pre-ordered our food on the lead up to the meal
Table was not available so squeezed us all onto another one. No offer of drinks for ages
Starters arrived and meal for my daughter aged 3 also. She enjoyed hers but was just warm enough
We then waited over 1 hour 30mins for the mains. When chased up staff said it was busy. We had to go to the bar to get more drinks
In the end after being there for 2 hours, I got up and left as had to get my daughter home so didn’t have my main course
Other members of the party finally got their’s after waiting 15 more minutes, well 3 of them did, the other 3 didn’t come out. The meals were cold. Staff explained that the chef walked out in the morning. If the management were any good then a phone call to advise of the problem would have been the decent thing to do instead of letting us attend
Absolute rubbish, feel sorry for the staff but the management need to get a grip
Never coming back again

Went for Christmas Dinner, pre booked our meal. The starters arrived promptly, but after 1 hr there was no sign of the main course, I asked if there was a problem in the kitchen, and if someone could let us know what was happening. 10 minutes later we were told we were the next table to come out. We ordered some more drinks. 30 minutes later we were just about to leave when the food arrived. The waitress was very apologetic and said she understood if we wanted to leave. All the waiting staff were great and tried their best, so we decided to stay. Unfortunately my wife's nut roast was cold and the potato fondant on the menu had become a big boiled spud on the plate. My wife had asked if she could see the manager, only to be told he was busy and wouldn't talk to her. She told the poor individual who had to deliver the message that we were p**ssed off and would expect a discount. However we thought the waiting staff had done their best. A point we made every time someone came to the table. We had to leave before the coffee and mince pies so we went to the bar to pay. This was where a female Basil Fawlty told us that a 90 minute wait between starter and main course was "not that bad" and lied, telling us that we had been rude to staff. I was astonished, she also said that they had been forced to work Christmas Day. As an employment law expert I suggest the staff seek advice if they are being treated this way. Don't go there until a new manager is appointed and they stop employing an assistant manager who takes her customer service advice from a rottweiler.

I’ve been twice to this pub and had two very different experiences.
First one in 2018, where the food was delicious and service excellent.
We have been this afternoon for a belated 70th birthday celebration for my Dad as we couldn’t celebrate earlier in the year due to lockdown. We pre-ordered the food and were looking forward to another great get together.
The food was unfortunately awful. I had potted shrimp, which were coated in far too much oil as was the side salad (dripping in olive oil).
For mains I had the cheese and onion pie, which actually came mainly consisting of mustard. I had one bite and couldn’t eat anymore, but instead of sending the dish back I kept quiet as I could see how busy the waitresses were. It was only after checking the menu that I saw no mention of mustard which I think is quite shocking given how many people either do not like the taste or are allergic.
Even when my plate was cleared there was no asking if we we had enjoyed the meal or if in particular my meal was ok as I had hardly touched anything on the plate. Unfortunately my Dad felt the same about his fish and chips, with the batter being very soggy - again no questions asked when he sent back a fairly full plate.
We won’t be visiting again I’m afraid, we travelled for 2 hours from York and it was not worth it especially given the complete lack of interest into whether we even had an enjoyable meal.
I was also surprised given the current state of ithe pandemic how jam packed the pub was and especially where we were sat - table of 12 tightly placed by the bar meaning we had people on top of us the entire time.
Such a shame.

Due to recent lockdown measures we decided to treat ourselves to a family meal out as we haven't been to restaurant in good while. We decided, after recommendation to try The Strawbury Duck. On first impressions it looked a lovely pub, set in a lovely part of the countryside....sadly that's where my positive feedback ends. Tables in the bar area were seated very close to one another, had to move to the table as we seated as it felt we were practically sat with the table behind us. Had to return my daughters soft drink as it tasted, what I can only describe as disinfectant.
After quite a wait, our main courses arrived. My wife's plate was swimming in water from the undrained vegetables, which was soaked up with a napkin. We finally returned the entire dish back to the kitchen as the chicken breast was undercooked. Sadly, even after the meal was returned, the same chicken breast was still not cooked thoroughly..... unsurprisingly my wife lost her appetite with her meal and left it barely eaten. We complained and this was removed from the bill.
What was initially booked as a treat for the family, ended with us looking forward to receiving the bill and leaving. Overall, we left feeling really disappointed with our first (and last experience of the Strawbury Duck).

I visited this pub as I always use to go when I was younger. We were sat down at the back of the pub which was fine. The waitress came over and asked what we wanted to drink fairly quickly. We then ordered our starters, the starters took ages to come around 25-30 minutes. Our mains took the same amount of time as well, the food was lovely in fairness and the portions were a decent size. We tried to order another drink, however none of the staff were not attentive at all. We were fed up of waiting for our plates to be cleared so we ended up going to the till to pay the bill. The pub is lovely and the location is beautiful, however the service was really poor and literally no food or drink in stock .

After a walk around Entwistle reservoir I had a roast beef buttie and soup. The bread was homemade, the roast beef was warm from the roast beef for Sunday lunches and the soup homemade too. Sat in the sun in the beer garden out front by the car park. My wife had the same but cheese instead of beef and chips instead of soup which again were hand cut home made. Excellent meal and all for about £25 including a pint of Moretti. Some other couples in the beer garden had burgers and even a tandoori swinging kebab. Deffo be going back even though it is a 20 min drive. I don’t do reviews but had to put this on as soon as I got home.

Visited with daughter and dog as a holiday treat. Had informed pub that we had a dog but was placed on a small table where the dog was often in the way of waitresses and other guests. The tables were VERY crammed in, which was a surprise during these covid times.
My food, a turkey sandwich was nice. However the burger my daughter had was red in the middle. We alerted a waitress, who heard our complaint but then disappeared for ten minutes, leaving the half cooked burger on the table whilst I ate my meal. Eventually she returned to ask, " Is it ok it we cook the burger a bit longer?". My daughter , was quite shocked that they hadnt offered another burger at this stage, but just said yes. The " recooked" burger appeared...served on the same bap which had red juices which seeped through from the undercooked burger! I suggested to my daughter that she left that part of the bap which she did. The meat was tough and not particularly nice. Then she had a chip which raw in the middle due to it bring far bigger than the rest.
When the waitress returned and asked if the meal had been ok, I said , " no" and explained why. She disappeared and said she would tell the chef.
Well...little good did that do. We didnt get any feedback, no apology or refund for the terrible meal!
I am surprised at their response and will not be returning Indeed I will be telling all I know about this inadequate pub that I will not visit again.

The Strawbury Duck is not social distancing, lets start with that one. We sat in the back room on a table for four, the room is approx 12ft sq and there was seating for ten people in there. Part of that room also functions as the one way system around the pub going to/from the toilets, so it's a very busy and small room. The food was nothing more than okay and nothing to rave about but the service was perfunctory at best, We had drinks spilled onto our trousers and could hear throughout our meal the staff shouting to each other across the pub like feral youths. I've enjoyed going to the SD for over thirty years on and off but I won't be going back.
