About
What you get at The Spotted Dog, Penshurst, is an independently run lovely old rambling 15th century white clapboard building (which started life as several cottages), paneling, low beams and three open fires. It is warm and welcoming in winter but equally enticing in summer. The pub is positioned in beautiful countryside with tiered beer gardens at the front and back, the latter affording an outstanding view. This is a family-friendly pub where the older generation, children, tourists, walkers and dogs are all welcome. The food is mostly traditional English with some gourmet specials and fish dishes with fresh fish delivered daily. Consequently, the specials board changes daily.Being a free

Visited today for lunch with a walking group of 19. Communicating with the staff regarding the booking and pre-order was a breeze. Everyone was highly complimentary of the meals and service, empty plates and glasses all round. A real gem of a country pub, open...fire and beams, good ale, food and service. We will certainly be visiting again. Thank you and we’ll done to the Spotted Dog.More

We were a walking group with 12 diners who all had an excellent experience. From the initial booking to our lunch on the day staff were very friendly, accommodating, efficient with great food and service. We'll all be back! Thanks to the Spotted Dog team....Much appreciated and highly recommended.More

We had the roast lamb and roast pork. Both were very good, maybe the potatoes could have been done a little longer. The meat for both was very tender and plenty of assorted veg. Best of all was the service. All the young staff so...polite and alert if anything was needed. The owners should be very proud of them especially Niamh.More

Without doubt the worst roast dinner I have ever eaten. My partner and I had high hopes having read reviews, but what we were served up wasn’t fit for man nor dog. Stunning view out the back of the pub. We ordered two roast lambs...and were served up two plates of Luke warm food. The roast potatoes must have been cooked last night and left under the heater since, they were rock solid and had we thrown them at the window I’m sure they’d have done some damage. The lamb had more fat that meat on it and the veg had clearly been cooked a long time ago, all served up with a pint of bistro’s best gravy drowning the plate. On paying the bill the lady behind the bar didn’t ask how the food was and so I explained to her how bad it was and her response was thanks very much.. Customer service was non existent apart from the young guy who did try to offer us a Yorkshire pudding to replace the “roast potatoes” We arrived and left within 30 mins of getting there.. that says it all.More

This place is wonderful. They gave my Cocker Spaniel his own roast beef dinner. My Cocker Spaniel wants to get another date in his diary, and pronto! 15th century building, open fires, bursting with character and the staff are lovely and kind. The food is...fresh and wholesome. I need to go now, because I want to order my sticker toffee pudding.....More

We visited the Spotted Dog for lunch. The beer was good and staff friendly but the quality of the food was very poor. The Ciabatta used for the sandwich was not fresh, I'd guess either frozen-defrosted or some kind of 'long life' bread and was...literally falling apart. We sent them back and asked for the granary bread which was an improvement but still not fresh. The chips had a greasy and unpleasant taste like the oil in the fryer was old. I wouldn't return for lunch any time soon.More

Arrived at 7:30, pub quiet, got drinks but another 30 minutes for food order to be taken. Food then took 40 minutes to arrive. Food OK But cannot recommend, everything too slow. By the time the food arrived at 8:45 we were wilting with hunger....Sorry, cannot recommend despite excellent chunky chips.More

Bear with - I have a lot to say and all good. We took my 94 year old Mum in law to lunch today and it was an unmitigated success, largely down to the great prompt service and excellent food. The staff were all engaged...and cheerful (even the teenagers). The welcome was warm and the service didn’t flag despite delivering an enormous number of covers. Mum hasn’t a great appetite but was able to order the roast from the children’s menu and tucked into it with enthusiasm, clearing her plate (not known in recent times). Our Big Boy 3 meat roasts were beautifully cooked. The meat was top quality, local, well cooked and well rested. I’d be pushed to say the last time I had thick carved lamb with such perfect texture. Veg were simple and had been steamed well. Roasties plentiful and nicely done (thank goodness no rosemary: total anathema to him indoors) and good yorkie. My fellow diners loved their respective brownie and sticky toffee pud and I basked in the warmth of their appreciation as I’m not driven by the reward of a pud. Sunday lunch aside, the menu was varied but neither over extensive nor up itself. I watched a couple of dishes pass by and they looked of equal high standard. Built in 1420 the pub is a wonky delight but handholds are good and lighting where you need it. Outside there’s an amazing view from the terrace. In case you’re left in any doubt, we would thoroughly recommend a visit. Mum is still saying what a wonderful time she had … and it’s five hours later!More

Delicious meal at the spotted dog. The burgers were amazing. Quirky, traditional pub. Will be visiting again for lunch, they have a lovely view outside. Good parking.

Great old style traditional pub, friendly staff, made you feel welcomed. Fancied a meal out and came to the spotted dog. The food was hot and tasted lovely. Lovely guest ale was "high fives". Prices of today was reasonable. I've bought friends here and never...been disappointed. Will keep up the 20 minute walk to get here! 😎👍More

The Spotted Dog is a charming old place tucked away in the Kent country-side but unfortunately the Sunday lunch there was very, very average. The potatoes appeared to be out of a packet and meat was ok but not great. We also had a veggie...meal and the chips again seemed straight out of the packet. With the place also seemingly a little unclean we can't say we enjoyed our visit.More

This is a lovely historic pub. However, we visited on Father’s Day and had a very poor experience. We waited far longer than other tables for our food. When it arrived we then waited for the vegetables, wet cutlery and condiments by which time our...food was cold. The menu online did not reflect the correct price for Sunday roast and there wasn’t any Chicken or Turkey ! The roast had 2 slices of meat, 3 roast potatoes and a soggy shop bought Yorkshire pudding. We had a small dish of boiled carrots, cabbage and broccoli for 4 adults !! This was not a good experience or good value. We didn’t have a desert based on the quality of the main meal. Disappointing!!More
