After a nearby reastraunt messed up our celebration meal the Bolton Arms proved to be a fantastic evening and meal. Despite walking in with no reservation following our disappointment Bolton Arms provided a sensenational meal with really good wine. I will in preference use this place when we are again in Basingstoke. The crispy belly pork I had was the... More

We went to The Bolton Arms for my parents anniversary after the nearby Hatch let us down despite us booking in advance. The Bolton Arms were able to fit us in. The food was absolutely gorgeous and the staff were pleasant, efficient - totally professional. They turned what could have been a disastrous night into a good one. Thank you... More

Booked a table for a social event and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Table was perfect, in the bar area which is full of character. I presume it was the landlord and landlady serving us who were both lovely and kept our drinks topped up! The food was fantastic, not one complaint from a large group and all... More

We have been a few times for food and drinks, every time the service has been fantastic and the range of food on offer is great. They change the food on the menu regularly. Better than your average local pub. Keep it up.

We were on the way back to London from a day-out to the coast... and were peckish. Using Google Maps we asked for "nearby pubs"... and it directed us to The Bolton Arms... and what a find! From the welcome - not just from the boss... but from the 4 other waitresses we spoke with - we were made to... More

Since my wife, Margaret, died of neglect in Basingstoke Hospital on 2nd August, 2012 and her birthday being shortly afterwards on 30th September, 1928 I have attended The Bolton Arms on 30th of each month for an evening meal, this being a place we frequented in the past. The hosts Mickey and Duncan, proud Scots, make all customers very welcome... More

A lovely , warm, friendly and local pub. Serving good food with lots of locally sourced items. Happy to go with family, friends or just the two of us. Menu good but could have more specials. Can get a bit same-y

Originally built as a farmhouse circa 1490, this Grade II Listed building was extended during 1550, 1650 and latterly 1720, as shown below. The sympathetic renovation of 2008 uncovered a wealth of period features such as vaulted ceilings, oak beams and central brick fireplace, all of which have added to the intimate ambience of the three clearly defined areas : Roschild’s Restaurant (fine dining); The InnBetween (snacks and nibbles); The Village Bar (quality wines and beers). In addition, there is an attractive landscaped Beer Garden at the rear of the property For the historians, Old Basing was the site for the longest siege of Oliver Cromwell’s reign where Roundhead met Cavalier during the 23 month siege of Basing House which ended in November 1645. A large proportion of the ruins were used to build the houses in The Street with musket ball damage still being visible. The site of Basing House is open to the public for most of the yearThe InnBetween at the Bolton Arms was built from the bricks of Basing House and is renowned for sitings of “The Cavalier” ghost that has been seen on many occasions. It is rumoured that upon his arrival in Old Basing Cromwell beheaded one of his generals in the original part of the building as “encouragement” to others !Following Oliver and Richard Cromwell’s Protectorate period the House of Stuart was restored to the throne in 1660 when the lands of Basing were returned to the Paulet family. A “Dukedom” was specifically created and bestowed upon Charles Paulet as a show of gratitude for his loyalty to the Crown. Charles Paulet became the first Duke of Bolton, hence the name of the pub. Charles Paulet was later elevated to the position of Lord Bolton by a simple clerical error when called upon to address the House of LordsThe InnBetween was the original Dame School for the area prior to the education system being established. Between 1720 to 1740 two spinster sisters offered rudimentary lessons to local youngsters between 8 am to noon for a penny a week - prior to the boys going to work in the fields and the girls commencing house chores. In the evening the schoolhouse became the local hostelry Conveniently situated in the quiet and picturesque Conservation Area of Old Basing, the Bolton Arms is less than two miles from Basingstoke town centre. The village is surrounded by beautiful Hampshire countryside of open fields and riverside walks and is next to the cricket green, archery and bowling club, tennis courts and children’s recreation ground. If these pursuits appear too energetic, however, you can relax while spotting the many species of wildlife and birds that are found in the area ?
