A lovely setting in a quiet English village, this has all the old-world charm you could hope for. Indeed, this is reflected in beautiful interior and the welcoming service. Things even continue to in a positive vein when we receive our starters. A lovely gazpacho,...steeped in flavour, onions and garlic, was complemented by a lovely scotch egg full of meaty rusticness. Alas, the moment the main courses came out, the standard roast dinners we had ventured out for, it all went wrong. I don't know if you like bland, dry pork, squidgy roast potatoes, and burnt cabbage (although, the latter is intentional), but if you do, this is the place for you. The brown stuff smothering it will be right up your street too. The biggest problem with this dish, though, is that cabbage. Charred cabbage can be very nice, but on a bland roast is simply overwhelming. The taste of is everywhere and will be all that you remember. A shame as things got off to such a great start(er). A bigger shame when you realise how overpriced everything is. Twenty pounds for a plate of dry meat and crusty veg? Still, I want to end on a positive note, so can I just add the single bit of carrot I had was lovely?More
