Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I am very funny about roasts, I don't actually like them very much but this was the best roast I have had in a LONG TIME. Beautifully cooked meat and vegetables and the Yorkshire puddings were gorgeous. Staff were all very welcoming and friendly, lovely...cosy feel to the pub. Will definitely be coming back, amazing!More

I don't like to post negative reviews. I reckon everyone can have an off day sometimes and shouldn't necessarily be punished for that, but today's experience was unforgivable. 3 of us visited for lunch. We ordered drinks and main courses. Drinks were fine - 2...glasses of wine and a cider. 2 out of 3 main courses were sent back as the meat was raw in the centre - not blushing pink, but raw. This was a lamb dish (£28!) and a pork dish (£18) The pork was still raw when it came back just a few minutes later, though the lamb was just about cooked. The cook (my food experience here cannot justify using the title of "chef")came into the bar area after the plates were cleared but made no attempt to engage with us and/or apologise. The bill was discounted by 2 glasses of wine. Really? I will not return to this pub until it changes hands again, and I will not recommend it to anyone that I care about .More

Called for evening meal whilst visiting the area. The food was good but pricy for basic pub food of average portions and service prompt as we were the only people eating there at the time. The interior was functional with little atmosphere. I was disappointed...at having 10% added to my bill as a service charge as there was no mention of this in the on line menus or at the pub. Not sure if it was normal or due to being strangers (tourists) to the area but I felt it was sneaky practice and something that should be made clear at the outset. This made a pint of local beer £5.50, a glass of wine £10 and a pub burger almost £19!! I like to tip off my terms and not being forced on the issue as this was the case. Unfortunately we found this a disappointing experience.More

A lovely setting in a quiet English village, this has all the old-world charm you could hope for. Indeed, this is reflected in beautiful interior and the welcoming service. Things even continue to in a positive vein when we receive our starters. A lovely gazpacho,...steeped in flavour, onions and garlic, was complemented by a lovely scotch egg full of meaty rusticness. Alas, the moment the main courses came out, the standard roast dinners we had ventured out for, it all went wrong. I don't know if you like bland, dry pork, squidgy roast potatoes, and burnt cabbage (although, the latter is intentional), but if you do, this is the place for you. The brown stuff smothering it will be right up your street too. The biggest problem with this dish, though, is that cabbage. Charred cabbage can be very nice, but on a bland roast is simply overwhelming. The taste of is everywhere and will be all that you remember. A shame as things got off to such a great start(er). A bigger shame when you realise how overpriced everything is. Twenty pounds for a plate of dry meat and crusty veg? Still, I want to end on a positive note, so can I just add the single bit of carrot I had was lovely?More

First ever visit. We arrived at 5 so still nice and quiet. The Longs is cosy and stylish. We bought drinks and asked for menus which were brought to our chosen table. We were advised the kitchen opened at 5:30pm. We already knew what we...wanted so hubby asked if we could go ahead and order. The gentleman who served us said the chef was in and he was sure he could start our order early if we were hungry. We were in no rush but happily our order was taken. We both wanted to try the ploughman’s and a side of chips so not much cooking and hopefully not putting chef out too much. The food was beautifully presented and every element fresh and delicious. We cannot recommend this place highly enough. We will definitely go back soon.More

Stopped of the off chance to get a pint and some early food. Great pint of Butcombe and ordered the burger for £17 with dirty fries. Really friendly service and obviously the local pub for the village. The burger when it arrived was quite small...and clearly not home made but out of a packet. Reasonable filling with cheese and relish . The roll was stale. I sent it back and got another which was not a lot better. These aren't soft rolls but then they have to be crispy and soft, not just solid. The roll that wasn't huge clearly dwarfed the patty. The dirty fried were a mess. served in a small ramakin type bowl, covered in a tomato sauce so all soggy , and cheese and jalapeno on the top. If you are going to serve this combination, it needs to be served flat with half the sauce so that the fries are still crunchy. Really poor quality and value for 17 pounds. I am only writing this review so you can improve. You can't charge high prices then get away with this level of quality of food.More

I ate there twice in one week when I was last here four years ago and it was exceptional. I’m afraid it’s obviously changed hands as I’ve tried it twice this week too and it was very ordinary. Such a shame. I’d go there for...a drink as it’s beautifully fitted out etc, but for dinner ? No. Very limited menu and the food was just ok.More

I never thought I would be writing this review. This is our favourite place to eat out and we took friends who were visiting from Spain. It must have been the chef's night off! My husband and I chose Pie of the Day which we...have had before and loved. This was not the same! Pastry was dry and tough, filling was dry and the separate gravy was far too salty. Chocolate mousse for dessert was very un-mousse like - more the texture of hard rubber. We said nothing at the time because that would have spoiled our friends' evening and it was uncharacteristic of our usual experience. I'm sure this was a blip and we will go back - just hoping that this was a one-off!More

The Longs describes itself as a gastro pub but there was little evidence of this on our visit. I’ve never been presented with such a limited choice of main dishes at any pub. My burger and fries was edible but overpriced at £17. I found...an old menu at our holiday accommodation and it bore no resemblance to the menu we were given so I think that the Longs has unfortunately lowered its standards drastically whilst raising its prices.More

We arrived on short notice. The staff made room for us and greeted us with warmth like old friends. We were really hungry and so ordered some calamari as a starter! I order this all if the time wherever I go as I love it!...The calamari at the Longs Arms is by far the best I’ve ever had! Then the most amazing tasting roast beef dinner arrived which was huge! The Yorkshire pudding was the size of a baby’s head! Through the staff were attentive, polite and courteous. Loved every minute of this experience and we’ll be back soon!More

Lovely surroundings. Food was disappointing this time & overpriced for what it was. Have been there before for a Sunday lunch which was excellent. Croque Madam was classed as a main course but was really only a sandwich & at £14 I thought was overpriced....Shame.More
