Starters great but disappointed with my Main meal Ordered scampi which was not nice at all. The menu described it as deep fried which is how I expect all scampi to be cooked however this came in batter rather than bread crumbs which is an issue for me as I can’t eat batter. Instead of making a fuss I removed the batter and attempted to eat the scampi however it was more like king prawns with the poo vein still visible which I had to remove. This put me off my meal all together and I ate very little. I did explain to the waitress that it wasn’t as described on the menu but it seemed to fall on deaf ears. I do not feel this dish is worth the price and felt the item should have been removed from our bill.
I’m sure I’m not on my own thinking all scampi is bread crumbed as I have never come across this before it was more like Chinese prawn balls. The menu was misleading and should explain it as battered. I have also never had scampi which were king prawns. My friends seemed to enjoy their meals but did comment that there wasn’t enough veg. Not so sure we’d be rushing back even though the owner was a very jolly friendly attentive guy.

We were staying next door which I will do a seperate review on, will just say though that the accommodation was very good. Our meal here was really tasty, all home cooked and I believe a fair price for the quality. The waitresses were all very efficient and polite. We had chosen this accommodation/pub due to it's location ie the views having never been to this part of the country before. The table we were seated at for dinner had a brick wall to the side of us and although one of us could see out in front not the other. I asked if we could have the table next to ours instead. The waitress went and asked and the message back I am guessing from the restaurant manageress was a no. Would have been nice for her to come and explain if the people sitting there had requested that table and we would have totally understood rather than an abrupt no. Politeness is key in hospitality. Breakfast was back in this restaurant the following morning and was faultless, all well cooked and tasty. The gentleman running the pub was friendly and polite. I would totally recommend this place.

we had pre booked a table for our anniversary for the Monday evening online before we even left home for our 3 day break in Oxenhope. The food was absolutely delicious. We called in on the way to our cottage on the Saturday for lunch and I had the turkey dinner and my husband had the haddock in batter and chips. I can honestly say that my meal was possibly one of the nicest meals I have ever eaten. Everything was cooked to perfection and huge portions. I enjoyed mine so much that I ordered the same meal the second time we went and my husband had the poached haddock and parsley sauce and I had treacle pudding and custard and he had the prosecco and strawberry cheesecake. Yes, its expensive but worth every bit of the money. We were served by a young trainee waitress on the evening who did an excellent job waiting on us. Can't wait to return.

We won’t be returning
We went to the Dog and Gun for 70th birthday party.
We wanted a couple of drinks first but were ushered to the table
We ordered the food and ordered a bottle of wine
The food was very bland and not tasty at all. The sides took a few minutes to arrive and a sauce for the steak even longer. The vegetarian food didn’t look appetising at all. The wine bottle was taken once finished and two of the wine glasses were taken. After waiting some time for a waitress to come across I had to go to the bar to order more wine
The staff seemed like it was a chore to be there, food tasteless and we certainly won’t be returning

I've never been a great fan of the Dog and Gun, I find the menu overpriced and better suited to 1984, however, my Father in Law likes simple, no fuss food, and used to visit the Dog and Gun throughout the year.
He booked his 50th birthday meal there, a table of 10, as a pub, it seemed ideal to have a meal in the afternoon and then few drinks afterwards.
The food is fine, just very uninspiring i.e pate - just a quenelle on a plate, with a few undressed leaved, and toasted sliced white- no chutney, no refinement etc.
We were made to feel very unwelcome throughout. The table booking was accepted for 2:30pm, and we assumed on a Saturday that food would be served all day. One of our party was running a bit late, and as soon as they arrived we were told we would have to order straight away as the kitchen was closing. If this had been mentioned on booking, then we would have likely eaten earlier - no one want to eat at last orders when you know the kitchen team are trying their best to get home.
The main issue is how we were treated after the meal. Firstly we asked for the food bill so we could pay our share as we wanted to leave, and we left our money with the party to add in when the bill was paid, our group stood to say goodbye to us and the staff almost tripped over running after us to say that we hadn't paid. We explained that the rest of the party weren't leaving yet...or so they thought!
As mentioned earlier, the website refers to the Dog and Gun as a traditional Yorkshire pub with a well stocked long bar, somewhere to maybe enjoy a few drinks...not likely. Shortly after we left the rest of our party were asked to leave because the BAR tables that they were sat at had been reserved for diners, they were literally turfed out and my mother in law who had recently had a back operation was forced to perch on a wall outside for an hour until the taxi came. It was a celebration and we had 'the works' the bill for food and drinks approaching £1000. How awful and rude to be asked to leave so unceremoniously!!!
If you don't want people drinking in the bar, then change the name to restaurant not pub, and make it clear on booking that there is time limit on tables.
Needless to say, none of our party will be visiting again.

The food it’s self was tasty however after paying near enough £22 for a steak & near enough £17 for salmon we were then expected to buy the accompaniments despite being told by the waitress that the chips and veg came with the meals. We were provided with one small portion of chips and one small portion of veg to share despite paying for two meals and accompaniments were £2.50 each which works out expensive considering the price you are already paying for the meals. I personally thing £22 for a steak without any sides such as chips, salad or veg is very expensive for a pub. I would expect to have to buy the accompaniments separate in a high end restaurant not a country pub. My partner ordered shandy’s as he was driving, each shandy cost £4.80, again I think this is extremely expensive for a shandy which I mentioned to the waitress who then told me a shandy is the same price as a pint of larger. Having worked in a pub before this is very expensive and I would have expected to have been notified of this before purchasing. The waitresses were friendly enough however the bar staff not so much. Considering we had just spent quite a bit of money on a meal nobody said bye to us as we were leaving which I find to be quite rude. Having worked in a pub restaurant before I know the aim is to make your customers feel as welcome and appreciated as possible to ensure they return. The food was nice however over priced and I wouldn’t say it was the friendliest of atmospheres to dine in so I wouldn’t return in a rush.

We were staying in the accommodation next door which was excellent. Every morning we came to the pub for breakfast which was included in the accommodation price. Excellent breakfast and service.
We were out all day so came to the pub every evening for dinner. Service and food were both equally fantastic. We had 3 evening dinners there, no need to go elsewhere in our opinion. All the meals were delicious and as we were staying next door we could both have an alcoholic drink with our meal.
We didn’t think the prices were expensive, they were what we would normally pay! The portion sizes were very good too. I did make the mistake on having a dessert on the first night but tbh it wasn’t needed but so delicious.
One thing for sure if we have another trip to Yorkshire we would definitely stay in the accommodation next door and dine in the pub! Just a fantastic local and without a TV pure bliss. Great landlord, landlady and staff….what a gem!

Had lunch at The Dog and Gun yesterday and it was really good. A lovely traditional country pub with outstanding views. The staff were welcoming and friendly and the bar menu was extensive with hot and cold sandwiches, jacket potatoes, filled Yorkshire Pudding, omelettes, in fact something to suit everyone. We chose to eat in the bar but were told we were welcome to eat in the restaurant if we wished to, even though we were having the bar menu. The food was freshly cooked and well presented and very tasty. The toilet facilities were spotlessly clean.
The only thing I would criticise is the price of the drinks - £4.70 a pint for a standard beer seemed a bit of a rip off and I can't imagine what they charge for wine ....!!!! Other than that we had a very enjoyable lunch and would definitely visit again. Please note though that the pub is closed between 3.00 pm and 5.00 pm Monday to Friday. Highly recommend.

Ate here twice as we were staying in the hotel next door. Both meals were A Mazing ! Warning. You need to be a big eater or super hungry to do justice to the famous Henry or the battered haddock. Great staff / service too. I was so pleased when one of the staff dealt with a rude, interfering customer who spoilt a little family celebration on the table across from us. My only whinge is the addition of cocoa power dusting on the jam roly poly and custard. Why?

I've loved eating here for many years, but this time the staff showed me particular care. My visitors were delayed due to severe traffic, and I had already had to change the reservation for later. Sat nav issues then took them to the wrong Dog and Gun some 40 minutes away!
Staff here were unfailingly helpful and flexible, with menu choices made in transit over the phone, to enable the obliging chef to work only a little beyond his official time.
All this was done with good grace, and our eventual meal was of the usual high standard. Thank you!

Not at its best at all the food left a lot to be desired I’m afraid and the service was quite frosty. The French soup was basically an onion gravy that should have been served with a Yorkshire pudding and the croutons tasted of burnt fat there was no cheese on top we did express our opinion but they were still on the final bill even though we didn’t eat it. The fish pie was really bland and to be honest didn’t taste of anything and didn’t come with any veg not even a small portion of peas but we really felt it wouldn’t make much difference at this point the custard was think and lumpy and just bad I hope this was just a blip as we have enjoyed some really good home cooked food here but not on this occasion sorry

Whether you are looking for an authentic pub grub meal such as fish and chips or something more adventurous such as pheasant or mussels, the Dog and Gun has you covered, great atmosphere, lovely staff and the food is just fabulous, when the menu says the fish and chips is a whale on a plate, they are not telling lies, it’s huge, the half portion is still a big piece of fish, better than any chippy. The Salmon fillet was to die for and the Yorkshire Pudding starter mmmmmm beautiful. Can’t rate this place highly enough. If you’re looking for a pub that has a gorgeous outlook, good beer, and excellent food you won’t go wrong with the Dog and Gun.

Nice atmosphere in a family run rural, really rural in breathtaking moorland, gastro Pub. The menu has a nice variety of starters and mains at reasonable prices. The special board was worth checking out as was the unexpectedly good wine list.
I had a prawn cocktail as I was feeling very 80’s and my friend had the Soup for starters and a Ribeye and Mixed Grill for mains. Great portions and the quality was excellent. They come with New Potatoes, Hand Cut Chips and either steamed vegetables or a fresh Salad on the side.
Without Wine but inc pre meal drinks £67.00 for two.
We booked 1400 on a Sunday and its a good idea as it was busy.
I would recommend The Dog and Gun to anyone who wants a really good country pub meal and experience.

We stayed at the Leeming Wells hotel next door and had our breakfast and evening meals here. The pub is warm and cosy with an old well shaft covered by a glass panel in the floor. The menu offered some great choices of evening meals as well as some delicious and different specials. The serving staff were friendly and charming.
Our breakfasts were great. Lots of choice, plenty of hot drinks and toast. All served by the landlord with charm and a laugh. We loved it here and the Yorkshire scenery is stunning.
Highly recommended pub food. Well done to all the staff & chef.

We have been here before Covid-19 and it was great unfortunately on our last visit it was very disappointing. Thirteen of us were crammed onto a table next to the door in the bar area, seven people had to sit on small bar stools. Four of us ordered roast beef which was so tough only one of us could eat it & the veg was bland. We were asked if everything was okay & we said the beef was inedible to which the waitress said sorry! The bill came to
£269. To say we were rushed is a understatement the tea was booked for 5pm & we were out of the building by 6pm WORST MEAL EVER
