We were travel from Gloucester to York and wanted to stop off for lunch to break the trip up, I found this little gem! I called up when we were a bit closer so we had more of a time scale and they were fully booked, so I asked if we could sit in the garden, we have a dog too so was perfect, that was fine but couldn’t reserve outside table, which is absolutely fine.
We arrived and I was shown the COVID one way system etc. We went outside, nice little garden area. A lovely lady I’m sure her name was Claire, served us and she was really lovely, very helpful, offered a parasol to us as the sun came out (before a few drops of rain came but nothing came of it) in and out with drinks and sauces, very friendly and cheerful lady.
The food was amazing everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals. I am on SlimmingWorld and they could accommodate everything (not that I’m fussy) I had the rump steak salad and it was beautiful my steak was cooked perfectly, the kids had chicken nuggets their beans in a separate bowl (they are fussy) my eldest had a steak she said it was lovely my husband had a chicken hunter type meal I can’t remember what it was called but we all went away very happy and satisfied.
They do eat out help out scheme so with drinks and out meals it was just over £30 which is amazing!
Thank you so much for having us, we may try to revisit on our way back home.

10 of us visited Friday 3rd February. There were 6 adults 4 children, not one complaint every meal was lovely and service second to none.
My son has special needs and needs to eat when hungry straight away the lovely waitress without heisting rushed to fetch his meal from the kitchen well before everyone else’s when told this about him.
We will definitely visit again, it’s such a lovely restaurant.

Totally impressed
Arrived at the Countryman and we were totally made to feel safe and comfortable.
Arrived a little early, so we were showed the one way system and am seating area where we could enjoy a drink until our table was ready.
When we were seated, we were introduced to our waitress who was being trained, you would have never known this.
The food was amazing, we had starters and mains all incredible cooked, hats off to the chefs xxx
Well done Countryman you excelled and should be super proud of your establishment and staff. We will return. 👏👏👏

Arrived here for luch as near a business meeting planned. plenty of parking, and nice staff, and an extensive menu. good lunch options, and several good vegetarian options (on papaer).
Presentation of food was not great and prices did not represent the quality either. i was expecting a lot better, but maybe the early lunch slot didn't help.

This was my second visit to The Countryman and I have thoroughly enjoyed it on both occasions. The service is friendly, welcoming and attentive and the food is superb. The menu is very extensive including a huge range of gluten-free choices, which kept my mum happy, and we were offered second helpings of vegetables too. This was my first visit post-lockdown and I was very impressed with the precautions taken to keep everyone safe, including screens between tables, a one-way system, staff wearing masks and gloves and lots of hand sanitiser stations. I would like to especially thank Claire, our waitress, who looked after us very well. I will definitely be back.

Popped in here on our way home for a Sunday lunch and I wished we carried straight on home...
This was the worst Sunday lunch we have ever had..
We both had the roast pork which was very dry round the edges..i mentioned it and the waiter just said i'll let the chef know.. I opted for the jumbo option which on the menu stated 'order if you dare',the only difference was an extra Yorkshire pudding, laughable really...I won't be returning here for a Sunday lunch that's for sure

We ordered a takeaway Sunday dinner from here today, and we were so impressed! We had a lamb, beef and a turkey. The meals were presented really well on takeaway plates, not split between boxes as some takeaways do. There was a good selection of veg and lovely thick slices of meat, great portion sizes too. We live around 15 minutes away and the meals were still piping hot when we got home. Really easy to order too - we phoned up earlier in the week, paid over the phone and the meals were brought out to our car. Very much looking forward to trying the rest of the menu when they reopen! Thankyou for a lovely dinner!

To start on a positive note, the staff were friendly and our waiter, a young chap, was first class a true credit to the establishment!!. The speed of the service was also spot on, i.e. not rushed but ready when you were!!
We liked the Countryman, it has character, but sadly on a negative note the quality of the vegan food, to be fair was very ordinary. The veg was undercooked and the main dishes rather dull, certainly not memorable and no better than you could knock up quickly at home. The dessert option for vegans on that particular night was solely 3 scoops of fairly average vanilla ice cream. We were informed that the more tastier option was out of stock due to supply issues, well fine, but surely someone could have even nipped to any supermarket and purchased a more exciting choice than average vanilla ice cream. I ate half of it and thought how boring and asked if I could possibly have a strawberry to liven it up , 2 strawberries were promptly delivered.
It's not so much the money although not particularly cheap, but that the choices were rather lacklustre, both my wife and I had a different vegan meal and both were absolutely average let alone the pudding!!
My wife wanted a coffee instead of dessert but sadly no plant based milk, this can be obtained again from any supermarket.
So in summary we liked the staff, liked the place, could live with the prices but the food for vegans ideally needs a little more thought for us to return.

The food was lovely well cooked and presented. Excellent service served by three people. Came for the lamb first time visiting there. I asked for small portion my hubby asked for large. His portion was huge l had to help him finish when we had to pay we were told he had a jumbo portion not what we asked for tried to explain would not listen so be very careful when ordering apparently only small and standard then huge portion jumbo. So if you ask for large it’s jumbo have a huge appetite to eat this. We will not be coming again menu very misleading why not just have two choices.

having looked at the lunchtime menu on line in order for our large group to order it just brought up the main meal offer. You have to search for the 2/3 course menu. Having chosen the fish- scampi, not what I would call fish- I was then informed after I had finished that course that if I wanted a dessert it would be full price as fish did not appear on the 2/3 lunch menu, whereas all the other dishes did. On complaining of such an inconsistency to the manager, he was most off hand and did little to rectify the problem saying that scampi was too expensive to put on the 2/3 menu.
The fault lay in the website menu which is unclear - and in my opinion ridiculous to have a single course menu that does not tally with the 2/3 course.
We intended to bring 15 people for Christmas lunch but due to the poor customer service on the part of the manager, who should set the tone, this will not now happen.
To cap it all the chips were soggy!

We were looking forward to our meal, so we booked to avoid disappointment, we selected the Daily roast & Chicken Napoleon and sat back to wait & wait 50 minutes later we reminded the waitress we were still waiting to be told the chicken was still cooking finally after another 10 minutes the meal arrived. The chicken Napoleon was very nice, my wife’s roast which was to be lamb, but changed to beef was tough but nice veg. We then with some reservation ordered pudding ( treacle sponge and the apple crumble. Well we waited and waited, finally the puddings arrived 45 minutes later, so after over two hours we had our meal and left.

Went for a family meal with my partner and children. Food was cooked to perfection and served piping hot. The twice fried chips were particularly tasty and we were that impressed we asked for more. We were greeted by friendly staff, who were very well trained to look after all of our needs. Very good value for money. We can’t wait to visit again soon, thank you.

My husband and I visited The Countryman after booking at short notice on Tuesday lunch time.
Having previously been employed as a ‘secret diner’ I know what I’m looking for and The Countryman have got this ! Signage outside the door left us in no doubt what was expected of us and we were met and warmly greeted inside, checked in on the track and trace and shown to our table along the one way system in operation within the restaurant.
At our table we were introduced to our waiter who took excellent care of us throughout our meal. The service and attention were as you’d expect in a much more expensive venue . The menu is extensive and beautifully presented in a timely manner and the time between courses was perfect. We were offered more vegetables or sauces if we required them and were offered further drinks on two more occasions throughout our stay.
Well done The Countryman, you’ve certainly got this!

Excellent Sunday lunch for 8. Greeted at the door and tables well spaced out. Most of us had Sunday roasts, generous slices of lean meat, all served with huge Yorkshire puds and trimmings and veg served sperately. Small plate was more than enough. Sweets well presented and very attentive staff (thanks to Jack for looking after us all).

We were trying to decide where to eat during our overnight stay in the area so we flipped a coin to decide with The Countryman taking the win. When we pulled into the car park we were wowed by the chandelier through the window but slightly concerned that it wasn't as busy as we'd expected it to be.
We were greeted politely and shown to out table, the menu offered a great selection and we had no problem deciding what to order. I don't think we were prepared for how much food there was, the portions are very generous and the food was fantastic. I was deeply saddened by choosing to have a starter as I spotted the desserts being delivered to the table adjacent to us and I definitely had a moment of food envy knowing that I just wouldn't be able to manage a third course.
Overall this is a great pub offering fantastic food with very good service, we couldn't fault this at all.
