About
The Cridford Inn - the oldest pub/inn in Devon and possibly the oldest in England dates back to 825AD. It had previously served as a nunnery and a farm, being originally inhabited by the early Britons/Celts, before the building was remodelled in 1081. In 1086 it was one of the nine small-holdings mentioned in the “Domesday Book” and by then belonged to the Abbey of Buckfast in the Manor of Trusham - a small village that’s nestled in the Teign Valley between Chudleigh, Newton Abbot and Exeter. With cob walls, a thatched roof and inglenook fireplaces, this traditional Devon Longhouse is approached by passing over a babbling brook, guarded by Willy Catchum and his faithful girl Teresa Green. Why not throw a coin in the lucky wishing well? This is a quintessential and quietly lovely English country Inn, offering the best locally sourced produce and interesting meals - from traditional pub food, to unmissable experiences, all prepared by skilled chefs who care passionately about food

We're back! Following on from my review of the 12 May we came for an early evening meal using the voucher purchased during lockdown. A lovely ancient pub and looked after by the easy going Paul. Unpretentious pub grub from a short menu. Short is good as food suffers if menu is too long and produced off a conveyor belt. Our 'am egg 'n' chips and the house burger were very good. Great chunky chips, crispy with light and fluffy centres. Covid19 regs well managed with proper cruet set and sauce on a side dish so none of those ghastly plastic sauce sachets which are seemingly ubiquitous elsewhere at the moment. Innovate use of counter beer mat towels for drying your hands in the loo for single use and wash.

Nice to return to the Cridford Inn in Trusham again! Generally get lost on the way here, but got here in the end down many a Dartmoor road for delicious food and drink.
We had starters this time, me prawns, and Chrissy had cheese tartlets with marmalade sauce, yummy.
The roast beef was as good as usual, nice and pink with scrummy vegetables and a light Yorkshire pudding too.
Why can't most pubs cook
roast beef properly?!
Pudding was home made fruit crumble for me, while Chrissy chose the white
chocolate bread pudding.
All washed down with a bottle of Malbec.
Well happy.....

Stayed for 2 nights (deal with Travelzoo & worth every penny. Soak in the atmosphere of such an old building (apparently dating back to the tenth century) and take in the creaky floorboards, original flagstone floors, low beams etc. Evening meals were excellent (compliments to the chef) with a good choice of wine and great value for money. Hubby a!so enjoyed the real ales on tap.
Rooms were superclean and very comfortable, equipped with complimentary tray of tea, coffee etc. Bathroom was modern and new.
Jade is also very much worth a mention - pleasant, helpful and knowledgeable.
A definite asset to this establishment.

Just popped in for lunch. Very impressed, the food was superb, and the service was excellent. We had the soup and belly pork to start with, and wow it was good. Then we had the fish and chips and not only a massive portions, but very very tasty fish with a lovely crispy batter.
A lovely place right out the way, definitely worth a visit, and would love to go back and try the evening menu if we get time during our visit.

Having had a lovely Sunday lunch on our first visit, we were very disappointed on our second visit to find my fish pie was sadly lacking a very important ingredient - fish!
Since they have been boasting online about their wonderful new chef, we decided to give it another chance. Unfortunately our drive was a nightmare. We twice had to reverse 50-100 yards up a single track lane because of an oncoming vehicle. I know they can't do anything about that, but it makes you feel your meal has to be a bit special to warrant the stress.
Unfortunately the food was very poor. Our main courses were both totally overcooked and dried out.
Such a shame as it is a lovely old pub, but we won't be going back.

Booked a table for the first night of our holiday and ended up visiting a further 3 times. The Pub has a good selection of Beers, Wines and Gins. The menu is not huge but there were always specials available and the pie and curry night was great value. The food was consistently of a very high standard with the Sunday roast being the stand out meal. As for the staff, they were friendly, polite and very professional in these difficult times. We felt comfortable and safe when ever we visited. Its a shame we live so far away or we would be regulars. Definitely recommend you visit.

For our 25th wedding anniversary we decided to stay local and visit the Cridford, having eaten there several times and occasionally enjoyed a pint after a walk. On our last visit the food wasn't brilliant but we thought this must have been a one off.
We waited an hour (which was fine as it was busy and we were happy to just chat) for our steaks to arrive, and although we asked for them to be medium they were well done, charred on the outside and dry. We deliberated over whether to send them back and after a couple of minutes caught the attention of a waitress who said she would see chef and order fresh. 10 minutes later another waitress arrived to ask what the problem was, we explained again and then the first waitress came back and free drinks were offered etc and they both asked if we wanted something else from the menu, but we wanted steak, not a hard thing to do for a chef or even a cook. Eventually the steaks arrived and they were no better, in fact my wife choked on her first mouthful. Again I got the attention of the waitress who again offered us more drinks or bread or a choice of something else but by now we were very hungry, disappointed and embarrassed. We left after offering to pay for our free vip members bottle of wine which we couldn't enjoy with a steak.
Sorry Paul we understand that hospitality is struggling to get staff but if that chef isn't capable of cooking to order on a busy night he should either had help or the menu reduced. Personally we think the steaks carried on cooking after being served on a plate that was basically so hot you couldn't touch it.
Whatever its our last visit.
On a brighter note we did manage to enjoy a really nice meal elsewhere in Chudleigh were the chef actually stayed on for us.

A first visit, really delicious food with Asian focus and great veggie options . We registered as vips to get a free bottle of wine from a choice of 8. Traded for our data obviously but that’s ok because they’re welcome to tell me what else is on. Arancini and the Asian greens were particular highlights and the switched on service was an added bonus. We will be recommending this to friends.
Three courses for two with wine free came to £55.

Our server Jade was welcoming and helpful. She was knowledgeable about the menu and her advice enabled us to make the right choice for us. The lamb, monkfish and Asian greens were all delicious. The meals are not cheap but are good value given the quality of produce and cooking. Well worth the walk from Chudleigh. We’ll be revisiting soon.

We called in on the off chance of getting a Sunday roast with family who are visiting, we didn’t have a booking but we were welcomed in and given a table, as always the food was amazing and service was excellent, one of the best roasts I’ve had.
It’s a lovely place to eat and spend time and it felt very safe with the social distancing measures they have in place.
Thanks for a lively afternoon.

Visited for Sunday lunch fully expecting to order a roast but the choices were too tempting and we both had ramen with pulled beef. It was amazing, hot, spicy and tasty and the deep fried soft yolk egg is to die for. Two pints of korev each, a pud each (very nice cheesecake and a parfait) and the bill was £60 which for the quality was very reasonable. Added to that friendly staff and perfect location. We look forward to returning and will book an Asian banquet night with our son who loves Asian food. 👌🥰

What a shame! The adult roast dinners were good but quite a lot else left a lot to be desired. The dining room was very cold and many of us had to keep our coats and scarves on. The childrens food was frankly mean. The burger inside the bun looked like a small coin! The chips were skinny frozen and artificial looking. Apple crumble took ages to come and was soggy. There were 11 of us and the food was not served so we could eat together. Some people waited for others to be served and their food got cold, others ate their food straight away and found that the others still hadn’t been served when they had nearly finished.
This is not a high end eating establishment so don’t be misled by the high prices and talked about ambiance.
We will never meet up for food here again be warned!

My wife & I have been celebrating our 5th Wedding Anniversary today (12.08.22). We booked the Cridford a few days previous as we saw the menu had a decent selection of Gluten Free dishes for my wife.
Well, i personally have been living in Devon since 1994 and have never been to this beauty of a country pub/restaurant. I’ve only driven past it on many occasions.
From the moment we arrived we felt a real warm welcome, a real peace and joy about the place. And we had the star of our evening Chloe who was our waitress for the evening. For a young lass who is still in school and I assume she’s working the job of a weekend and through the holidays, her personality, manner and service was first class. I began my working life as a waiter and know the importance of engaging well with customers. Many young folk in hospitality today,, sadly, don’t know how to engage. A good percentage struggle to be polite and attentive. Chloe is an absolute credit to herself and the Cridford.
The establishment itself is absolutely charming, tastefully decorated, comfortable, serving up a great menu, brilliantly cooked food, a great selection of drinks and to top it all off we had the pleasure of being entertained by a singer Megan Rae, who’s voice was superb and song selection for the evening was eclectic.
My wife and I have had some brilliant nights out together, this night at the Cridford is up there with the very best, if not the best.
10 out of 10 for the hosts, the waitress the food, drink, setting and overall experience. So glad we live only 15 minutes drive away. We will be back.
Thank you to all of the team at the Cridford who have made our 5th Wedding Anniversary a special one!
Love John & Becs x

The couple who run the Cridford Inn have though of most things and cater for most people. The food is excellent and the service from start to finish was very good. Yes it is a drive for most people to get to but there is plenty of parking and worth the journey. Good menu choices that caters for all types and you should have no problem selecting something. The place has kept the olde world feel yet has all the modern facilities. Very clean throughout and a pleasure to visit. We will definitely be back.

Stayed 2 nights and had dinner both evenings. WOW! The food is amazing; the risotto and the venison were probably the best I've eaten and I have tried a lot of high end eateries! The breakfasts are also the tastiest I've had for many years. Can't fault the service, feels homely and welcoming, nothing too much trouble! If you want to stay in Devon and want a historic Inn with fantastic food at reasonable prices, then get in before it's too late! We will be back!!!
