Slate has happy hour Mon to Friday from 4pm til 6pm. On Thursday and Friday's it is only upstairs - no service downstairs. It is great because it starts earlier than most happy hours and it provides free nib lies. Tonight was hot chips - yummy! Drinks are fabulous prices at happy hour only $5 for spirits. I think beer... Great place for dinner and or a drink. Had to commend them on meeting a request for some olives, which was not on the menu. Mgr asked chef to come up with something and they didn't disappoint. After a big lunch our visit was only for a snack, and tapas fit the bill here. Great pork dish, and the calamari... More

I went with the vegetarian, with excellent mushrooms, tomatoes, poached eggs and toast. We were drawn in with a 2 for 1 offer from our hotel, we will gladly return and pay full price next time.

We found this restaurant by accident and were delighted that we did. Great atmosphere and buzz in the place. Service was excellent and the food was just as good

We recently went here for breakfast whilst staying nearby. The service we got was excellent, the breakfast very good and great value. The coffee was also pretty good and a pot of tea is made with tea leaves. Would definitely go back here for a meal when in Melbourne next.

Found this great little find, shame we only found it halfway through our stay and not at the start. Great garden bar and atmosphere.

Economical, friendly, good food and service. Service so good that there is a memory of what was ordered previously.

This restaurant is good value for the food. Service is very good and staff very friendly. The alcohol was a little expensive but I guess that is the price you pay in the CBD. The food however was very good value for money and was very nice.

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
