We were invited to the Hippopotamus by friends who were staying at the hotel which houses the restaurant. Our apartment is close to the restaurant and we had planned to visit at some point because it is highly rated. Our evening with our friends was thoroughly enjoyable but the food was disappointing. Typically a main course costs $40-$50, which for... More

We chose to have breakfast here to have a beautiful view and enjoy the old time world setting. We dined Saturday morning around 8.30. Excellent service and food. So peaceful. A special treat. Will definitely come again

The location is very nice and the staff try extremely hard to deliver a memorable experience. We were not disappointed by our meal and struggled to finish it.

We went to this restaurant with high expectations. It is in a hotel filled with interesting art work, it is in a convenient part of the city, but most importantly, it receives enthusiastic reviews. I cannot think why that should be. Having struggled with the menu, because it is deceptive in that there is nothing adventurous in it, a fact... More

Lovely cocktails & dessert in creative ambience with a view over the harbor, great place for an uplifting afternoon after Peter Jackson's reality check at Great War Exhibition at the Museum & more war reality at Te Papa! All worth a visit, do it!

My family treated me to dinner in Hippopotamus for my birthday during our trip to NZ. We all had the 6 course "dégustastion" dinner with wine matching. The whole experience was fantastic. Its a very quirky establishment with great decor and features. Despite the "fine dining" context for the meal it was served and explained very professionally without fuss or... More

Of course it is hard for a restaurant to please a table with 3 chefs but from a restaurant with this pricing level I actually expect a defect free evening But from the beginning: We arrived at the restaurant at 8:10, beacuse our reservation was made for 8:30 we were seeted at the bar to have a pre dinner drink... They start with the best quality Kiwi ingredients and perform some magic art to make it look terrific. And it taste great too. I live locally and who took an American friend there last night, and we were impressed with the food, the presentation, the taste, especially the serving staff. I know this sounds a little OTT but I will... More

Hippopotamus comes with a high reputation. Obviously they excel at the high tea experience, but this was an opportunity to explore the dinner offering. After a great experience in the restaurant bar (attentive service, nice outlook) it was time to see whether the rubber would really hit the road in the restaurant itself. A short summary of the dinning experience... More
