After trying for years to find a decent, reliable 'Fish and Chip' shop in Dunedin we are now regular Friday night takeaway patrons of the Best Cafe. They offer a great selection of fresh fish cooked in delicious batter - and the chips are always superb. The service is delivered with a smile and nothing is a problem. I have... More

Excellent crispy thick chips that were not too greasy. The fish was lovely too. Nice friendly owners and a great cafe three doors up for flat white and old school video games.

I was lucky enough to stumble upon this hole in the wall on my first night in Dunedin. I had the special and it was amazing, fresh local fish, perfection. The waitress was lovely and the place def. all about the food. The next night I decided to try the clam chowder and holy smokes what a treat! Maybe because... More

Dunedin locals recommended that we go to the Best Cafe for Bluff Oysters, Onion Sausages and fish and chips. We (5 adults) took up their suggested and went there for a sit down meal. The cafe has pretty basic decor but is clean and had fantastic service from the staff and the meals were just what we needed after a... More

I have been travelling around NZ for about 2 weeks now, ate at various fish and chip places hearing that NZ fish and chips are better then AUS but was disappointed at most places I went to until I came here to 'Best Cafe' . I ordered the special with a side of battered blue cod and from the first... More

There's nothing fancy here, it's all about the food. As soon as you sit down you get a plate of sliced bread and hard to spread butter - just like you were back in the '70's. I ordered the Blue Cod, which has to be one of the best eating fish and it was cooked to perfection. This is a... More

We had the house seafood chowder, pan fried fish & chips and the paua patties here.. The chowder was creamy and excellent full of prawns, scallops, mussels etc...very wholesome too! The pan fried fish & chip was quite good except that the fish fillet was rather small. The paua patties appears to be a bit tough, sandy and quite tasteless.... More

Description
Established in 1932 the Best Cafe is a Dunedin icon. It has been through World War II and the Great Depression and has changed very little over the last 85 years it has been trading. I am very lucky to be running a restaurant that was originally started by my great-grandfather and then passed down to his son and family through until the 1980's. The following proprietors kept the traditions alive to maintain the Best Cafe's great reputation. As the proud owner of our old family restaurant my aim is to provide a truly unique dining experience, one where we can provide old fashioned, friendly service alongside a delicious plate of fresh, local seafood, golden hand cut chips and the best Bluff Oysters in New Zealand. If you want to take a trip down Nostalgia Lane and taste some traditional New Zealand fare then this is the place to visit.
