Went originally just for a drink, but menu looked good. Booked a table as it was sat night, ordered seafood chowder in crusty cob loaf, it was enormous and fantastic. Skipped mains went straight for dessert, lemon meringue stack, again huge and delicious. Staff very accomodating and friendly, reasonably priced for size of meal!

Rocked on into the the Speights Ale House tonight. First up a Cobb Loaf full of Chowder. Not hot enough for me, I like it scalding hot delivered to the table. They get a point for putting it in a loaf but overall the chowder wasn't really impressive. A 7.5 on the Fishy Scale. Nothing wrong with that score but... More

We were staying at the Victoria Railway Hotel and phoned the Kiln at 9:05 as we were recommended to eat there by a taxi driver and told we could come for a meal. When we arrived, they told us that we were told wrong and the kitchen closed at 9. Very disappointed but luckily for us, the bouncers at The... More

On a wet miserable day on our summer holiday we called in here at about 2pm hoping for some lunch. What a lovely warm welcome we got ... "absolutely" we could have lunch, so we settled down by the welcoming fire. Lots on the menu and our choices were delicious, as was the also welcome beer. The staff changed during... More

This a popular place even on Tuesday night so we thought that a good sign. It was. Service was very good. Good size portions and the lamb shank is superb. Definitely worth stopping at.

When we arrived at the restaurant we were told we could expect a 20 minute wait for food- that was fine. The restaurant was far from full with one large group of 15 people. Over an hour later we finally got served, now this place is no silver service fine dining experience. Most dishes involve chips or potatoes so you'd... More

Drunken Steak was huge and basically served on top of a mushroom pie. Chimney Pot Shearer’s Shank "pie" was yum. Service was good and attentive. Lots of nice copper and wood. Great place on a cold evening. Deserts were not outstanding.

Only had drinks here on a couple of occasions. Found the staff - particularly the guy I assume to be the Duty Manager, to be quite pushy. This, coupled with the feeling that the meal prices were a few bucks dearer than the previous Speights we'd been to, meant we ate elsewhere.
