I stopped by the Square & Compasses for a Sunday Roast and opted for the lamb. It was a generous and beautifully prepared cut of meat served with potatoes and vegetables. Desert was equally good and I can wholeheartedly recommend this pub.

Have been here a few times and it never disappoints. Hearty home cooked food at a reasonable price and super friendly staff! Today we came for a Sunday Roast and it didn't disappoint... generous portions, loads of tasty veg, mash and roast potatoes- I had the veggie option which was delicious and my boyfriend had the beef which he loved. Well managed covid restrictions so you feel safe eating/drinking there too. We'll definitely be back.

We have had a number for fish and chips dinners delivered to our door on Friday nights during the lockdown.
The whole service from friendly reception on the phone when ordering, good packaging, smiley delivery is all first class.
The fish is very fresh, a large thick portion, crisp batter and the fish is perfectly cooked. The chips are also very good portion and nice flavour. It is served with accompanying sauces.
'Compass' shows you the way to go............ then 'Square' it off by eating the fantastic fish and chips!

Hello, we are so glad you enjoyed our fish and chip deliveries in lock down, we still offer them now that we have openeded up again if you still want them! Our fish is fresh from Grimsby each week which we pride ourselves on the quality. We hope to see you again soon.

As a goup of six we visited your place yesterday. You had alredy reserved our place for us outside but as it was cooler you offered a place instead.
As a group coming from a distance we were so impressed with how you were so accommodating, attentive and friendly.
We had so much to catch up on after meeting up as a group after somany years and this was just the right place.
We enjoyed our meals and drinks and were not disturbed even though we finally recognised that we were still chatting near closing time.
Thank you for providing such a calm and caring environment .

We have just had an absolutely super evening at the Square and Compass. This place is the friendliest pub we have ever experienced mainly due to the lovely customer focused Beka who apparently is on duty a few nights a week .
The initial telephone booking itself was a cheerful affair and our reception was just as friendly if not more so. The food was superb,especially the pie, lasagna, cheesecake etc...and reasonably priced. It also came pretty quickly after placing our orders. But the icing on the cake was Beka, a primary school teacher by day. Every thing was done in an extremely friendly and helpful manner. It was a joy having her look after us. She went beyond the normal call of duty and when we return to this area, the Square and Compass will be our place to eat and drink. Your boss should be well pleased with you, Beka...we were!

Booked this weeks in advance for Sunday Lunch and they mentioned they didn’t know if they would be doing Sunday Lunches or just Christmas Dinners but someone would call if it was an issue. So no call. Having been seated and no menus were forthcoming I approached the bar and asked and the lady, who I assume was the Landlady, dismissed me with a sit down and we will come to you. Meeeerrryy Christmaaaas! Also saw a foursome come in for drinks and the welcome was dismissive to say the least. “we are fully booked” was the welcome, “we just want a drink”.
They came to take the order and I asked about starters and they said there weren’t any. She went to check and reaffirmed it as a no as we would have had to book a Christmas Lunch to prebook starters. If this was the case then that promised phone call would have resolved this and we would have had the Christmas Lunch instead and they would have got more revenue from us.
The meal was ok, lots of veg and nice and hot, limited gravy, meats were very good but the Yorkshire Puddings and the Roast Potatoes were Aunt Bessie’s or other frozen fare which was disappointing. We would have had a dessert too but no we weren’t the privileged Christmas Lunch customers.
So overall a disappointing visit which with a little thought and advance notice could have been much better.

Hubby and I thought we would have a New Year's Eve treat,lunch out and WHAT A TREAT! Cosy surroundings,warmest of welcomes from landlord and bar staff. Great value for money Sunday menu,service was professional but personal. Perfect size portions meant we enjoyed a leisurely 3 courses,washed down by a nice Thatchers Dry and a delicious Malbec.
Starters were duck spring rolls and lamb samosas,mmm not too much,just right. Roast beef and roast pork,everything simply and well cooked.Perfect melt in the mouth pork crackling and tasty extra gravy too. Desserts were a triumph,After Eight cheesecake and Strawberry Cream Tea(sponge,mousse,jelly,cream and scone creation mmm!. A decent Americano rounded off a FLAWLESS meal. Without a doubt we will recommend to all and return. Experience in the trade really did show and highest compliments to the chef(landlady).

Tasty Roast (we had beef, lamb and vegetarian) and delicious puddings.
Open seating area was ok but only a small area had covered roofing. Looking forward to being able to sit inside next time.

My wife and I enjoyed an excellent Sunday lunch at this village pub. The food was cooked to perfection, and we were particularly impressed by the quantity and variety of vegetables. The large and delicious main course was followed by and extensive and varied desert menu. All washed down with a selection of fine ales.

It was so enjoyable here that we visited with friends twice in one week. This is a great pub with tasty meals at a reasonable price and served by friendly staff. In particular, Becka was attentive to our needs and nothing was too much trouble; it was a delight to have her looking after us!

I have had lunch at The Square and Compasses once a week for a long time now.
Great pub. Friendly host. Several beers always kept well. Menu uses fresh ingredients
and is well-priced. I lunch with another, and we always look forward to being there.

What a warm welcome, cosy little table tucked away from the Bar, excellent friendly and polite service from all the staff. Food was well presented, hot and tasty. Desserts were absolutely lovely, not your usual bought in bulk buy stuff, we had three between us and they were all delicious (lemon baked cheesecake meringue just wow!) Thank you for a lovely evening and at a very reasonable price

Excellent traditional pub lunch in a friendly local pub. Nice to see the Square back to its former busy self with lovely food, large menu ranging from sandwiches, jacket potatoes to the usual burgers, scampi etc. and lots more. Will visit again.

Square & Compass is a very attractive and friendly place to go.
Fish night on a Friday is consistently an excellent evening out.
After many visits they have never failed to deliver a great experience.
